Has anyone found a way to create .mcfunction files on mac? Because when I tried it, it was just like, a blank file. I can't get notepad ++ so if there is any other way to make an .mcfunction file on mac, then please tell me.
Click on launchpad in your dock to open launchpad.
Open the Utilities folder and then click on TextEdit.
Once TextEdit is open click Format in the navigation bar. Then select Make Plain Text from the dropdown list.
Put whatever commands you want in the text window.
Once you're done close the window. It will ask you to save the file. Select the location you want it to save. You don't have to save it directly to your minecraft dir since it's a bit hard to find, just save it to your desktop or something and you can move it to your minecraft dir later. Make sure to add .mcfunction to the end of the file name.
Once you click save it will ask if you want to use .mcfunction or .txt. Choose .mcfunction.
If you want to be able to edit .mcfunction files with TextEdit then just open a .mcfunction file. It will ask what application you want to open it with. Click Choose Application and then go to your applications folder. Inside there go into Utilities and then select TextEdit. You should only have to do this once.
Your file has a .txt extension with extension hiding enabled. Right-click on the file and select Get Info. Inside the window that pulls up there should be a textbox labeled Name & Extension. Change it from sayHi.mcfunction.txt to sayHi.mcfunction and uncheck the box labeled Hide Extension.
I basically followed all the rules, like, you don't need the forward slashes before the command. I never made any comments for it was only a test. There were only two commands.

I'm starting to think that you just need a window's computer to make those custom/extra files. Unless there's some sort of file thing that you can download to change that file into an .mcfunction file.
You're probably better off searching for a 3rd party text editor for Mac computers if the standard software doesn't work properly.

Show me exactly what /function command you're using to execute your functions. Remember /function doesn't take file paths, it takes resource locations.
Windows vs. Mac. I see why people choose Mac over Windows. Because of compatibility and customization.
It's funny you say people buy Macs for 'compatibility' when the upgrade from maveric to yosemite makes iMovie and other official apps not work without an update. And it's equally funny that you said customization, because Windows computers are FAR more customizable than Macs. Did you mean this the other way around?

Yah I've used both. Mac actually has a directory that's easy to access once a alias is made.
its not .minecraft it's a folder. The . Would have confused Mac users.
Im surprised that people say "they don't know" if they've never used a Mac, but here is a tutorial for people who don't know Mac Minecraft directory.
Find the Library folder. (Try right clicking or holding on the Finder symbol, then click Go to folder type in Library)
Find Application Support folder in Library.
Find Minecraft. It's lowercase.
Drag the Minecraft folder onto your quick access on the left side of the window you have open. (Assuming the finder/folder window is the only window open.)
This will create an easy alias you just click on to access your directory.
Windows:
Right click on the icon in the corner (Just find the windows symbol.)(some people have the task bar Above the bottom of the screen.)
Click on "Run" (or whatever allows you to GO TO a folder)
Type in %appdata%
Find .minecraft
Drag this into the left side of the File Explorer Screen. Into the Quick Access menu.
Make sure it's a thin line that's blue is where your dragging it. If it's a box over an item, that's moving it, not making an alias.

Windows:
press Windows + R
Type in %appdata%
Find .minecraft (should be at/near the top if sorted by name)
to add to quick access: right-click -> pin to quick access
to add to desktop: right-click -> send to -> desktop (create shortcut)
to add to start menu: right-click -> pin to start
done
so actually, windows is just as easy if not easier than the listed mac method.
If that isn't the correct function command then I'm sorry for the inconvenience. I just followed what the other youtubers did because it seemed like they knew more than me.
Did you use exactly that command? Because if your trying to execute the same function file you showed me in this post, then the command should be /function myfolder:sayHi.

Well, it might help if you use another text editor. I know a great one: TextWrangler. It's based around coding meaning it allows easy saving in different filetypes, doesn't add any formatting, you can get it from the app store, and I think it's free.

To make a function file try this:
If you want to be able to edit .mcfunction files with TextEdit then just open a .mcfunction file. It will ask what application you want to open it with. Click Choose Application and then go to your applications folder. Inside there go into Utilities and then select TextEdit. You should only have to do this once.
I have already tried that. I've even downloaded a world with pre-made functions and they look different from what I made.
Function that I have made (Left)
Function in the downloaded world (Right)
Or just roll your mouse over the pictures.
The sad part is, they don't even run.

I've also done that. It still didn't work.
With .txt (First Picture) Without .txt (Second Picture)
I've tried it in minecraft also, it still didn't work.

Well then, I'm at a loss on what the problem could be. Are you sure you're executing the the function correctly? What command are you using?

I don't really know what text editor to use.

you need to /reload in-game
you also need to make sure all the lines in your command is either a command or a comment (#).
EDIT: Execute them in-game.
Show me exactly what /function command you're using to execute your functions. Remember /function doesn't take file paths, it takes resource locations.
It could be a formatting issue. be sure the file is in the correct format (ANSI, UTF8, UTF16, or whatever MC uses, IDK what it is exactly)

Well, my words are too complicated to understand. But I meant windows is more customizable. Sorry for not being precise on help stuff.
My mistake.
It's fine, I had a feeling you mean that. People who chose Mac instead of Windows are generally doing so because of reliability or familiarity.
