The builds work in this format: major.minor.bugfix
Typically a change to the major version (such as if we went from 1.12 to 2.0) or a change to a minor version (1.11 to 1.12) will not be compatible with the other version's server. The only exception seems to be a bugfix change, such as 1.9.4 to 1.9.3 which I mentioned. But that isn't all the time and the change logs will say if it is compatible with an old server.
