Anybody have any luck finding fossils? I'm wondering if there any telltale signs that would lead me to start digging to find one. Do you just dig blindly until you come across one, and if you do, how would you even know?
Also I'm wondering why were fossils added in the first place? Is it just a new activity for folks, like "now I can be a fossil miner", or are fossils a new way of finding something that you can sell or barter?
Sorry about so many questions, it's just that I'm curious and would love to know more.
Nothing really ever gets added to Minecraft because it fits minecraft or otherwise advances some sort of story. It's only added because the developers wanted to do it and ran into no insurmountable problems doing so.
Actually fossils are implemented in PCMCv1.10 as a Structure Block so adding them to the world was quite simple.
The structure block is stored in the Release 1.10.jar file.

According to the wiki, fossils can be found in desert and swampland biomes 15-24 layers below the surface including the various hills. My question is: does that mean if you have a mountain in the desert, you could potentially find a fossil near the level of the surrounding surface embedded inside the mountain? Does anyone know?

I have been wondering the same, but haven't found any information.

zfarmer, exactly. A fossil hunter looks for signs of where to dig, so I would think that they would code this into the game somehow.
There are no signs of a fossil, it's just a completely random occurrence, and there's really no purpose of looking for them at all, as the blocks you obtain from them can be crafted easily.
There are no other parts, because these structures are not fossils. They are called fossils because that's what the human understands, but beyond that there are no similiarities to the real-life concept. Fossils would make sense, given that one can successfully argue that Minecraft has erosional mechanicsand by logical extension a system wherein fossilization could occur, but Mojang threw a whole toolbox of monkey wrenches into the world-consistency engine by saying "these are not fossils".
Moreorless, Mojang simply added bone ore veins to worldgen using a construct (structure blocks) that forces the definition of a limited number of shapes.

I'm yet to see one of those fossils .... It would be nice to excavate around it and make a monument or something like that

Found one really deep in a desert biome. It had loads of coal ore around it, but took a while.
I think the bone blocks contained in the fossil are great for building.

@LachGameZ we you actively looking, or did you just stumble into it while mining. Also, were you able to dig it out?

Fossils can be crafted into bonemeal, which makes plants grow faster. I'm kind of surprised that nobody mentioned that yet.

I'm thinking its a new adventure to have - find and dig up a fossil to find out the paleolithic history of Mineraft!
What I'm wondering, is why just in the shape of a head or a rib cage? What about the other parts?

I think I got it,
but I still think there should at least be an arm!
There are 8 different fossil types including he skull
