i only play survival mode in minecraft, i like to build big complex structures over many years without creative mode slowly toiling away at the land. and 1.9 is torture for me
it has ruined survival mode just so that the pvpers can have their "fun" (it sounds like even they dont like it)
why do skeletons backpedal away from me? sure ok its "harder" (if you think frustration is the same as difficulty) all it really means is that i have to chase after the enemy while they are knocking me back and that is sooooooo tedious, does nobody else see the irony of an update that was designed to prevent spam clicking that now has enemies dart around making combat more frantic?
i do like the attack speed system, it opens up possibilities for daggers and hammers and all sorts of other fun new weapons based on new balance options around attack speeds, but the mobs in survival are just frustrating right now, afterall what do the pvpers care about the mobs anyways?
Why are you chasing after skeletons? Why aren't you shooting them with a bow? Or siccing your dogs on them? (Dogs LOVE to chew on bones, you know.)

Like AThingWithAThing said, you should get a shield. They require 6 planks and 1 ingot, so they're very cheap, and they work wonders against skeletons. Fighting mobs becomes much easier after you acquire one.

Not to mention skeletons will literally stop targetting you and run away from wolves, allowing you to attack them without having a single mark on you or your wolf.
i actually did that, its not that i cant, its that is annoying as hell to fight skeletons, sure some of u say oh ur not doing it the most efficient way, but heres the thing, its WORK to do it the most efficient way, fighting mobs used to be a nice sideshow while building my structures, now it demands ridiculous attention and ironically more clicks than before, and what am supposeed to do while i wait for my sword to recharge between hits, just put up my shiled and wait for that 1 second? thats so boring
i have an infinity bow with power 4, again its not that i cant fight like that, its that i sometimes want to use on eo fmy many swords, or how about when i just feel like venturing deep out into the world with expendable gear? iron is now useless and creepers can even 1 hit you in diamond which is absolutely physically insulting, they should remove backpedaling from skeletons and improve armor again

0.6th of a second*. And you don't HAVE to wait for it's full recharge. It doesn't demand attention, it simply means you are no longer a god/dess through the entire night. Keyword night: Monsters are usually gone by sunrise, so build during the day. Sure there's the occasional Creeper or hiding skeleton, but they usually despawn before the morning ends.

so i did that and i am appauled at how slooooow combat is in 1.9, the shield works fine but after every hit i have to just hunker down behind it and wait for the skeleton to fire an arrow before i can wack it again, didnt they add a feature that lets the shield work from the front without you having to raise it?

The solution to your problems is the shield, which is now basically a necessity.
That's a graphical glitch. Arrows still function as normal. Reload your world/client.

those .6 seconds add up in an already time consuming game, the point is people wanted an update to pvp combat, but pve combat is slow and tedious now
also if you dont wait for full recharge its even longer for a kill so i hardly see why they even added that feature, they should have just made it impossible to attack if it wasnt recharged

To add variety. The .6 seconds already almost perfectly line up with the .5 second invincibility frame everything has after being slapped in the face.
But if you're in a group of mobs? You have a choice to use the sweep attack, or control your clicking speed to keep them off your back, for example.
There's many reasons why you'd want to use a variety of attack speeds now, instead of just mashing as fast as possible, which really wasn't all that helpful.
There are a few workarounds or "advantages" Mojang has given the player over skeletons. Most of which have been before 1.9. As previously mentioned, wolves can mitigate the problem almost entirely. But screw that, wolves are too rare. Let's look at some of the easier ways of fighting them. They are tough to fight admittably, I know. But they were always meant to be the "hardest to fight" of all night mobs.
A direct approach, or "rush", will no longer work against a skeleton. Kinda makes sense that the skeleton would distance itself from the player. If you have a sword and it has a bow, it is intelligent enough to calculate such a simple move. However, you can still rush a skeleton if you are fast enough. Horses are a good mean of doing this, and shields are even better.
Shields can block the damage almost entirely if you position them correctly. I mean, they seriously are better than swords were at blocking defense wise and don't slow you down. So that alone will allow a rush approach.
Of course, there are other means of fighting a skeleton than rushing, The intended means. Most of which involve zoning the skeletons and killing them. Here are a few ways:
1. Bows
2. Hide behind wall/tree, create temporary wall
3. Knock a skeleton into sunlight or force it into a small shady area.
4. Run behind a tree, bait out and avoid a shot then charge
So skeles are useless in daylight essentially. Unless in water. But they won't strafe in the water to my knowledge. Snipe aqua skeles.
If you are in the plains, only fight them in daylight. They have little ground. If they are in a forest, your odds are good because you can hide behind trees.
Zoning is best all around, but you can also go for an ambush route. Get close enough without them being able to shoot then close the gap.
Now, a few more ways.
1. Iron Golem/Wolf
2. Splash Potion of Healing/Regen
3. Trap / knock off cliff
TL;DR: The best way to fight a skeleton is terrain advantage. They were always annoying, but are now a little polarized. So you have to exploit there's big weaknesses if you want to beat them. Use a shield if you use a sword and a sword if your using melee. and don't fully charge your strength meter because knockback from nerfed damage spam clicks > damage when zoning a mob. Otherwise bows and wolves make them easy targets.
So given the pros and cons of each terrain choose one that you think best suits your skeleton fighting style when building a house. Or even deforest your area and put one tree in a place you can easily kill them.
To add variety. The .6 seconds already almost perfectly line up with the .5 second invincibility frame everything has after being slapped in the face.

except i cant use the sweep attack while walking backwards (unless i hold shift i think) so i have tos tand still or move so slow im gana get hit, overall the prsetation of 1.9's combat is just tedious, its almost twice as long to kill any given mob as its 1.8 counterpart

Not really, I find myself taking the same amount of time killing things than before, if not, 0.3 seconds longer, which isn't a lot. (Also, mob AI was pretty much non-existent 1.8, so try comparing to 1.7.10 or lower, and see if anything's changed)
But, hey, I understand 1.9 isn't everyone's cup of tea, and I see your point, so I'm not ganna try and say you're wrong about how it feels. You can move while your sword is charging, just stop right before attacking, and you'll still activate the sweep attack.
Skeletons are now like Little Mac in Super Smash Bros. 4. At a glance, they seem overpowered, but they have distinct and easy to exploit weaknesses. Shields are specifically designed to make them manageable. Wolves will automatically pursue them and they'll barely try to fight back. They can quickly become helpless when they don't have a lot of room to move, and fighting multiple skeletons is actually safer than fighting just one, since they'll often end up shooting each other and that leads to mob infighting.

shields make them managable huh? how about when 2 skeletons are firing at you at the same time so one of them is always firing while the other one is on cooldown? now this MIGHT be managable with a shield except you can only walk with your shield up so u can never drop ur shield while ur going over to them,

Line 'em up, and watch 'em shoot eachother down.
No seriously, too many skeletons will easily provoke a war between them all, leaving you to have some time to grab popcorn and eat until only 1-2 of them are left. Then you can easily deal with the last ones standing, as they'll usually have significantly less health.

My thoughts exaclty. They are polarized mobs with strengths and weaknesses pushed to extremes, and dangerous if you're not cautious. And like little mac, a "patch" has made them more polarized but still not that good because their weaknesses are just so exploitable. Tedious, but exploitable. And to a large degree exploitable. Emphasis on exploitable.

I tried using a bow on 1.9 and my arrows stuck in the air and/or ricochet back at me landing within steps of me. Completely unplayable.
get a bow and light up around your building
