Personally, I think it's more of just a fun little addition to the game that doesn't necessarily need to add function. Like fireworks. They're so much fun to create, and even more fun to light off. But they serve almost no purpose in the game, besides letting other people know where you're at, or as a possible beacon system of sorts. The same goes for building things that look nice. Aesthetics are by no means necessary in the game, and provide literally no function whatsoever, aside from being easy on the eyes. But many people still choose to make their builds look nice, not for function, but just because no one likes an ugly building. So elytra aren't exactly how some may have pictured them, and they're far from perfect, but that doesn't mean you can't enjoy them just because they're fun. It adds variety and a wonderful new way to "fall with style".
And 1800 blocks?! Really? That's much further than I though they would be able to glide. In all honesty, I thought they would have nerfed them far beyond what they have already. But I'm definitely not complaining
True there are other items in the game that serve just as much or less practicality. Though the thing about fireworks or building aesthetically is that you don't need to go through the majority of single player content to do them. They are are available early to mid game while I find the Elytra are more late or end game seeing as you need to defeat one of the bosses just to get to where you can find one. The Elytra are a nice addition to minecraft and for what they are I do enjoy using them, but they just lack the practicality I feel they need to make sense of how difficult they are to obtain.

I think we get that you think they lack practicality, you have said it I don't know how many times, lol. But on the topic itself, I agree with you that it should have more practicality in terms of being able to at least fly upwards for a small amount of time before you have to glide again, but then I also agree with everyone else that just because it's in the game you don't have to use it and sometimes its just for fun and travel in a stylish and fast way!
Oh yeah and here is something you should try with the elytra: Fly up super high then glide around for a bit. Then look strait down and start spinning your mouse, you should start doing barrel rolls. I was even able to pull up at the last minute and still glide!
Also I have another thing some of you could try but it's up to you guys if you wanna know about it. Why do I always get off the topic!
Galileo knew the fact, but the data wasn't mathematically calculated until Newton.
EDIT: I like Elytra. Building options have expended immensely. Super tall structures can be made, with an added layer of security of not falling to one's doom.
I think I've learned as much about gravity as I have about the opinions on the elytra from this post

This actually is a very good point. It's like a wearable safety device when building tall structures.
If they implemented a Thermal system that allowed you to gain height when flying above heat sources like Lava and Fire I think it would make it more useful. Right now they are more for safety in high spaces or for fun than anything.

I suppose that is one use for them. Thats one less hardcore world I would have lost in this case.

That is one thing I was hoping- nae expecting to be put in with the Elytra that sadly was not the case. I've been trying to seudo replicate that with command blocks but last thing I tried sent me into orbit. Thank Notch I had the coords for the command block in my clipboard to /fill it with dirt.

Well because you failed at making it with command blocks I'll try it and let you know what happens.
It would just be nice to have some new things such as thermals, launchers, and just other stuff in general to make Elytra a bit more practical. It's fun as it stands, though. Being able to jump off mountains and towers for long distance glides and shenanigans.
Well I see what you mean and I can't really disagree to be honest they aren't as practical as they could be and yes they aren't really made for unlimited flying but who want's to build up 15 blocks to have fun gliding for like 7 seconds and then destroying the tower tediously.
Some sort of launcher item would be cool but does it really fit into minecraft? Because we don't want to go over the top in flight but maybe someone can make a small machine that launches you into the air with redstone or something but until then we'll just have to deal with the Elytra
(I personally have nothing really against the Elytra but you have a valid point)

i have a simple issue with the rate of speed they travel (which i feel makes then useless)
they travel about as fast, or faster, than a minecart yes?
well guess what, even with my view distance all the way up, i still reach the end of the loaded chunks pretty quickly, especially on servers. (single player i never reach an unloaded chunk)
when that happens, the elytras literally teleport me SDRAWKCAB because im moving so fast, the server forces me back to last known position.
I also want to know how they are going to fix what most servers use to stop people from flying
the player is flying auto kick, will go CRAZY with this on a large server with everyone loading chunks left and right....
how do i stop these things from happening?
because to be honest, it happens alot, EVEN IN A MINECART. ive been kicked 9 times from a large server for 'flying' when all i did was exit my minecart when it was moving fast.....doesnt seem very practical except in singleplayer....which i never play, because i get too lonely
You actually had that in your original hang glider thread, didn't you?
Well now it is a thread devoted to improving the Elytra centered around thermals, but yeah. I don't link it because I avoid advertising my threads but this was relevant so I figured I'd mention the idea.

It involves building towers unfortunately, but here's an idea:
Say you want to build a castle that's really difficult to get into. You make a wall that's booby trapped with lava so other players can't get in, and other security measures to make building over it a challenge. No doors or gates through the wall. You have to use an Elytra from a nearby tower or terrain, which means no nooby players are getting through that first line of defense. From there, you can make passwords or a specific landing spot in an inner moat of lava to keep out the other unwanted guests.
Here's my opinion. Elytra wasn't made for a practical use. It seems to not have been made for a use at all. It just seems to be a way to legit fly in survival, probably by demand. All of this has no use too me, because I use hax

Actually, you use mods, not hacks. But that's a topic for another day. Actually, Elytra can be practical as a failsafe from falling, as other people have said. And it does have a use. It's a spoil of victory, a trophy.
because the dragon egg is completely and utterly useless, can't even be used in building sustainably as you can only obtain 1, the elytra on the other hand is amazing to use, is great on amplified worlds, and can even allow you to pull off MLG stunts such as flying through 1 block high gaps.

But in Survival mode, considering the lengths you go to obtaining the Elytra, it really isn't worth it. No, both are mostly trophies. (which is not a bad thing)

I tried it with terrible results. I gave my wife my glasses for a second, a creeper showed up and now my wife is pregnant.

I use hax, not hacks :). If you say the elytra is a spoil of victory, then so is the dragon egg, and those are not really in the same league.
How so? Heck ,they're even in the same Dimension!
