I never had any issues with boats as they were before 1.9, even before I increased their crash resistance (1.8.2 increased it, I did the same) and fixed the desync issue (using a fix posted to the bug tracker more than a year ago; this was never that bad for me, likely because I don't play on versions that lag or explore new chunks while in a boat, which causes far more lag than simply loading existing chunks), and issues like boats sailing off after you left them are easy to work around by slowing down and leaving the boat just before landing (it will continue on and stop when it hits land). I don't even remember anything changing when 1.6 came out; then again I only used boats to travel in more or less straight lines between two known points across an ocean (no parkour maps, boating down rivers, etc).
Here's something I cannot do anymore with the new "fixed" boats. It was the most hard thing possible I created, but to be able to do it, we absolutely need foward and strafe keys:

No big loss. How many players did that in an average Minecraft world anyway?
They hinted at some possible boat updates, almost like as if they were going to introduce new boat types. Maybe give it a little time to see how it plays out. (you could always post on their Twitter and let them know they fudged up boats and insist they fix it :p)
IMO the new boats are amazing. It was so annoying to constantly break your boat. and it was very hard to control. Now, steering is easy and you don't break when you dock.
I personally love the new boats, but they indeed aren't made for any kind of racing (or maybe QWOP-like racing). I think what we need is some sort of motorboat, which is what the boats always felt like.
I reckon we will get some. They'll probably add a new boat type, either with a specialised redstone engine you need to craft, or something similar to the furnace minecart, where when we input coal (or other fuel) our boat will run. Although stopping in that situation would have to be addressed. I personally like the idea of some larger vessels being introduced, so instead of boat mods we could build working vessels in vanilla.

Once, I had mob-lag so bad that a zombie hovered in the air above me, motionless, for a good 20 seconds, while I tried to no avail to get a hit to land. When it finally unfroze, there was an explosion of zombie and injury noises, and I was blasted a good 20 blocks away and half my hearts drained. This was on easy.

That would be very cool!
Hey I had an idea. I don't play the 1.9 snapshot, but if someone plays it and see that, what happen if you try to enter a boat while riding a pig with a carrot on a stick? Or mabe just putting a carrot in hand with an animal riding the boat with the palyer.
Boats have a rhythm to paddle in. You find that rhythm, and you'll always win the race.
Boat parkour?
Ok so races will be something thinkable.
Yea boat parkour. In short, as soon as I realised that boats were tricky, even in Beta version, I always tought about making use of these limits. Limitations are parameters, and parameters permits games. I'm also on the pig case in that way of thinking and gonna release something soon. The following pig can be use in a wide various ways outsite it's "pig role", exactly like the boat.
The best example to explain that would be this use of the boat limitations:
Oh no, they fixed literally every complaint people had about pre-1.8 boats. such a loss.
Boats were broken an unusable for regular use before this update. You couldn't place them in water, you could only control them using the mouse (making it so doing anything else besides boating was pretty much impossible without stopping), they used to break as soon as soon as they hit any block (no matter what speed), and they would be launched into Oblivion the moment you'd get out because of faulty collision detection. Not to mention boats frequently desyncing on servers, causing them to become unusable and unbreakable.
All of this was fixed, so players can finally use boats the way they were intended. Who cares if you can no longer parcours using boats? at least I can finally use them in survival.
Not to mention, with the 'losses' we got as mentioned courtesy of Blitzgrutel, we also got many more interesting quirks/exploits with them.
The biggest being riding boats on ice being super speedy and extremely fun, probably even more so than on water (Paired with a couple of simple restone contraptions, you can have complex, non-flat races). You can now ride off the top of the heads of almost any entity, including players. Boats now 'disable' mobs such as skeletons when riding in them, preventing them from attacking. They can, of course hold two entities in them now, the many, many bug fixes added to them to where they feel stable and viable, the list goes on. There's probably tons we haven't even learned about these new boats.
I dunnu, I feel the trade off was neat. I guess the only thing that doesn't make much sense is that you can't ride up slopes and just ride straight through them, but I'm not sure if that's true, and if it is, not that big of a loss, just use a bit of redstone to elevate your boat.
I'll attempt to make a 1.9 parkour map, using the new Elytra and boats. If I succeed, I'll post it in the maps section and here!
Cool! So we're two!

TheMasterCaver's First World - possibly the most caved-out world in Minecraft history - includes world download.
TheMasterCaver's World - my own version of Minecraft largely based on my views of how the game should have evolved since 1.6.4.
Why do I still play in 1.6.4?

ok in 1.9 they should've done this boats gets hit starts to decay more times you hit it finally breaks huh sounds good

Command blocks are fun

I would like the simple easy controls back with the annoying bugs fixed. If not possible simply remove boats. - Occam's razor

I take it the current two-button controls of boats is far too complex for you?
Boats have a rhythm to paddle in. You find that rhythm, and you'll always win the race.
What I did first when that snapshot came out was make a maze race, since crashing won't be a prob. Not to mention steering can be tricky.
Boat parkour?
Strawberry, how did you get so many huggles?

With 1.9 finally arrived, I must say that I am WAY MORE than disappointed. Nearely everything I created for the boat does'nt work anymore...
The boat does'nt get up when entering a water slope or pillar. It just sink!!!! (no parkours, no trial race)
When I click under a block, the boat does'nt appear anymore above it!! (no boat puzzle and no boat battle)
If I put a boat on a water slope, he does'nt get down rapidely anymore!! (no slope race)
The only thing left to create for that crappy thing is a dull flat race.....
EVERYTHING that was fun and exploitable is now gone...
And so, everything I was working on since ALPHA is also gone.
4 years of work and concept creating in trash.... Thanks Mojang.... gosh...........
