That is the problem: Actually new weapons could add a lot more to combat (And, in the case of the axe, woodcutting axes and waraxes are not the same thing) than simply turning tools into improvised weapons. Specially now that a real, dedicated crowd control weapon is actually needed.
I totally agree with you here... but I'm pretty sure that Mojang is nowhere near done with the new things. They were tinkering with existing tools because they wanted to create a good foundation for future mechanics; now that they're done fixing up what we already had, they're able to focus on adding new things entirely. It'll thus end up being better than the mods...
...assuming they actually DO add new weapons anyway. If they don't do that, yeah, 1.9 will be pretty "eh" at fixing combat (the typical "a step in the right direction but not enough" that we get from Mojang). We need actual variation in equipment; most of the current problems with combat stem from the fact that everyone is completely identical. Fortunately we're seeing Mojang doing some of this in the form of the Elytra so hopefully they decide to add more loot.
Oh look, another guy who clicks 5 cps. I just explained why GOOD pvpers hate 1.9. There are a mass of people saying, "Oh, I'm so good at 1.9", when in reality they only click 5 cps. But you're 100% entitled to your opinion.
[snip]
Quote from Leviathan143 >>
Definition of a good PvPer please?
One who clicks 9+ cps, who hotkeys, refills, combos, etc.
I'm not entirely confident you're as good as you say. You do realize that mercy invincibility is a thing, right? Even in the old system spamclicking would have just made most of your hits do nothing. You don't need a high clickrate, in fact 2 cps (or 4, or 8, or 16, etc.) would yield the highest DPS assuming you can stay in range. Jitterclicking just means you don't have to time it.
Either way, the elements of pre-1.9 pvp that people tend to cite as evidence of skill are present in pretty much every combat system in a 1st person game. Wow, I need to move? And look at my opponents to hit them! Gee, that sure is skill-based! And it is... but that exists in pretty much every first person game with a combat system. And Minecraft is also bogged down with elements that shift skill even further out of the equation, like the existence of a "clear best" equipment set, lack of equipment variety, lack of mechanical depth, etc... and if we're going to talk about spamclicking/jitterclicking being skill-based we may as well just ignore Minecraft entirely and start playing Cookie Clicker.
There are obviously some things that aren't quite perfect yet, but hopefully Mojang will continue to develop them and make it better before they release 1.9 officially.
Ah, ah! Microsoft, not mojang. Mojang wouldnt have made this many additions so close together like this.
To be fair, it is still worth noting that it is doing a worse job than most mods do. Specially with the "new weapon" (Most mods would add a bunch of interesting weapons. Ex Balkon's Weaponmod, but 1.9 only made axes a semi-viable weapon and tried to make the other tools act as weapons).
I think that's a little unfair because they aren't exactly adding new weapons, they are just making tools that are in the game more usable as weapons. The axe especially makes sense in this regard for obvious reasons.
It has nothing to do with what Mojang adds (or mods) but how they add it.
One big problem is that lately Mojang bolts new content onto where they see fit (in 1.9's case, end game) rather than fleshing it out and making it fit with the game in a more logical progression. They focus on 'playing catch-up' with old unfinished features from before that they don't seem to pay much attention to the features they're actually adding and which ones they've made completely useless in the process, plus they fail to fulfill past goals in the slightest.
It's like they're 3 people at Mojang screaming:
"Exploration is most important!"
"Balance is most important!"
"Difficulty is most important!"
requires a tedious amount of exploring by needing vast amounts of backwards-building-bridges over the void
rare... the end towers are far away, but the ones with ships are even more rare. Have fun grinding bridging!
gives 7 minutes of use
becomes "too expensive" after repairing in the anvil a few times
if you dip too low it seems you lose that altitude to speed and just slowly glide to the ground instead
So it'll probably be even less of a thing in survival than beacons. In servers the available wings (those that don't require travelling millions of blocks) will probably be snatched by other players and permanently broken (until repaired in the crafting window with another pair, at least).
So in the end (also in The End) they don't achieve any one goal. Instead, exploration is tedious and always the same, everything is underpowered, and the things that should be 'difficult' are just annoying. I'd say the problem is that the developers are out of touch, but the problem is that they've never really been IN touch, the
game is (and always has been) a manifestation of the whims of whoever is working on it at the time. I would say that artificial difficulty and blocking features behind a grindy-and-linear goal of late-game is something that's very much against the spirit of the game.
Another big problem for that is anything 'too complex' is shunned even though sometimes problems don't have a simple solution that fits in with your current system. Maybe the reason so many mods use a certain solution is because it's a good one? I think players want those solutions for many reasons... the same reasons they don't like the current solutions.
That's the thing with modders, individually, they probably have solved every problem that Mojang still struggles with. They do everything Mojang tries to do... only they do it successfully. They take the game to the full extent of its capabilities. Nothing is off limits, the entire game is putty to be molded. They don't worry about how complex something is or limiting how something should be attained. Difficulty is an 'illusion' so you stay interested in the game, but do you really need to be constantly in fear for a game like Minecraft to still be fun? That's kind of why people play sandbox games... it's more about playing the game than winning the game.
Many mods just add things that take the game further, and do so in a way that's open with crafting. They add a new tier of gameplay rather than making it harder to reach the peak of the original endgame. They make existing things easier so you can be even more creative while adding new challenges (sometimes more mental challenges than anything). I mean, what's wrong with that, Minecraft is a block-building sandbox game first and then a survival game, right?
Then there are those that focus on difficulty. Betterthanwolves is probably a good example in that it reworks everything rather than just trying to make the game 'harder' by making the mobs spawn more or deal more damage. If a modmaker wants to change something (recipes, mechanics, etc.), existing player expectation and contraptions are irrelevant.
That's what's so great about mods: you choose which ones you use. That's also the problem with vanilla: you don't choose. The devs have to find that perfect balance to please multiple crowds, which they usually don't. People complain now because it's 'news' but in months many will still have gripes but just won't talk about it (then there are those who mod/plugin it away so it's irrelevant). I am still surprised how many freaked out about hunger initially but didn't after multiple changes added in that necessitated eating much more frequently (if you get poisoned by a witch that now spawns outside of swamps, get to safety or you'll stop healing altogether once you regain that health unless you binge eat).
Before someone asks "If wings are so bad, how could they be improved while keeping balance?":
in place of durability, some other charge bar recharges when on the ground.... think of this as being sore/uncomfortable from flying or whatever makes the wings work need to replenish
player-wide attribute, would be present on all carried wings but not transfer to other players when dropped
would stop players from using it as a crutch, since they'd need to be on the ground as long as they've flown
wings break only on death, depending how you were killed. Fire/lava most likely to break some wings, Arrows have a small chance to break and swords/axes a larger chance
if their chance to break is met, they need to be repaired
repair would have a set anvil cost, not rising the more you repair it
different kinds of wings could rarely be found when exploring and would yield different advantages. Note: limit 1 per loot chest.
Icarus wings, found in 2% of desert temples. Works as Elytra do now. Repaired with feather. More vulnerable to fire than other wings.
Bat wings, found in 1% of dungeons/strongholds/nether fortresses. Works like Elytra now, but with better swooping ability, repaired with leather.
Elytra, guaranteed in end ships but also in 1% of end city chests. I think these should be more OP to compensate how hard they are to get
repaired with chorus fruit?
to go with actual definition of elytra, should be less likely than other wings to be broken, specifically when not in use
longer flight capability (not necessarily falling more slowly, just the recharge) than other wings
to mimic bug wings, should possibly be able to hover, especially good for building.
depletes charge more than regular flying, especially if not still or smooth movements
being hit makes you stagger (rarely crash, maybe?) and lose significant charge, so it won't be an easy way to gain an unfair advantage in PVP

I drown my CPS to 4 sometimes, I still get wins. Why? Wtapping, strafing, aiming, hotkeying, and the shift tactic. Now to get a kill, it takes 20 minutes

Ι will answer to your question.... It is just A BAD UPDATE!!! You say we need more strategy in this game rather than spamming the mouse button. Imagine skywars with shields and melee cooldowns and all these wierd stuff. It is impssible to play minecraft without normal swords. How will you fight the wither? It spams projectiles at you. And come on now!!! FLYING IN SURVIVAL MODE???!!! . It is the recent snapshot with the fairy wings.
Mojang, please... you cannot put Age Of Empires (strategy game) and the sv_cheats=1, noclip in minecraft
Dude, dont blow up, there is positives! Minecraft is more about realism than fairytales right? So spaming a sword may not be that bad... if changed. If the liter swords (Ex: wood) swung faster than the rest maby it would be more balanced. Also There was GLIDING added in the snap, not flying. Pluse, its way underpowered as you have to defeat the enderdragon to find it. Going back to the realism thing, its like if you downloaded a glider mod. y u complane about it when mojang adds it, when everyone wants better ways to get around in single player anyway? Atleast its not tping like in pluggins were you /home to get home. So dont rage, Kill cows instead.
I don't want to continue this conversation as it would be endless so here is my opinion:
Previous minecraft = more serious, with better mechanics
1.9, 1.8 minecraft = Guys what should we add to the game so that the community has something to wait for? (INCLUDING guardians, lets be fair here... mojang needs to add new enchantments to defeat these things)
Someone doesn't like using strategy. 1.7an d earlier =/= better mechanics. True, I enjoyed the Mechanics, but from a designer's point of view, they were getting too simplistic as time went on. As for 1.8 and 1.9, your statement is inaccurate and horribly assumptive of people. And what enchantments does Mojang need to add for defeating Guardians? Depth Strider and respiration seem to get the job done. (and night vision.)
Something tells me you are worried about losing your high stats on a PvP server.
Something tells me that you have never fought the guardians.
Sounds like your loadout just needs a little adjustment.
Try adding the Depthstrider(Added 1.8:14w25a) enchant to your boots. Notes:
Increases underwater movement speed
Every level reduces the amount water slows you by ⅓.
Level 3 will make you swim as fast as you walk on land. (Any level beyond that will have no effect on speed.)
Speed potions will affect your swimming the same way as your walking at level 3.
Does not increase vertical speed.
Trickiest part of dealing with guardians is in my opinion; getting to the temple. As there is usually no cover outside. Once inside however, their laser attacks can be prevented by line of sight. Interrupting their LoS for even a split second cancels their attack entirely.
I like to tote along a few water breathing, and night vision potions as well, but additional loadout items are entirely up to you.
Something tells me that you have never fought the guardians. Going into an undersea dungeon full of fishes with railguns with your shiny protection IV armour and you get destroyed by their lasers. You cannot shoot arrows (because they fall down), you cannot reach the underwater railguns to kill them because of the water and whats more their laser is as powerful as an instant damage potion. What enchantments does mojnag need to add??? 'Waterproof' enchantment for the armour (so that you can move faster underwater) and 'wave ripper' for bows (so that you can use the bow in the water). As far as 'Something tells me you are worried about losing your high stats on a PvP server.' is concerned I think that you are just trying to avoid the negative aspects of this update.
true, I haven't, mostly because I can't find a dag nab ocean temple. I did find a stronghold though, so wish me luck on killing the dragon! On topic, from what I have seen, on can dodge their lasers in the temple, (it's trickier outside though), and Depth Strider lets one move normally underwater. I'm pretty sure Aqua Affinity lets one swim faster as well. (I could be wrong, I have never used Aqua Affinity before) As for the PvP stats jibe you mentioned, I am more than willing to say that I have some misgivings about 1.9. I'm not excited for shields, I'm on the fence about the new arrows, stuff like that. Have you fought Guardians? Or at least researched them? You seem to be unaware of new enchantments and basic strategies here.
EDIT: Aqua Affinity is a helmet enchantment that lets one mine faster under water. (Thanks Acteon)
Breaking blocks underwater is allowed at regular speed, though the player cannot be floating to get the full effect. Different levels (through editing) are no different from lvl 1.
Holds no impact over movement; but still a good idea if you intend to mine up some of the temple! - Only applies to helmets.

Aqua infinity: you dig faster right? Well. when you come to this temple the elder guardian gives you mining fatigue III (even if you don't see the big boss fish) so its USELESS.
Another fun fact! Since his aura of Mining Fatigue III is a debuff; you can kill the elder and immediately remove the debuff by drinking a bucket of milk! Be sure to have your second water breathing potion handy though!
Depth strider: depth strider is a very helpful enchantment for this type of dungeon but NOT ENOUGH. Keep in mind that in order to go fast under water you need to stick to the 'floor of the ocean' but it is hard since guardians can swim much faster than you.
I guess opinion perhaps; but if you obtain Depth Strider III, you will move in all directions besides up and down at 100% normal speed. This makes closing with the Guardians (between attacks, remember to interrupt that beam with any sight-blocking object!) quite easy. As a bonus; if normal speed still isn't fast enough, Depth Strider III allows you to further increase your movement speed with Swiftness potions! Truly alchemy is the bane of these creatures.
Wow mods deleted original post because of "innapropriate music"
What is skill:
1.7: Strafe, combo, jitterclicking, wtap, hotkey, refill really, whenever I see people pvp pre 1.9, they just jump right in, no skill, no thought, just a thirst for blood
1.9: bring better gear, run, spam debuff arrows, etc. that was pre 1.9, now it's a bit easier to beat people with better gear
How much fps do you get:
1.7: 95
1.9: 20w really?, one of 1.9s main goals was for an fps increase
How good is hit detection:
1.7: super good with 2000 ms
1.9: hit doesn't register 50% of the time no idea what your talking about, all my hits register, and my computer is crap
Additional reasons: Elytra*, idc how it's spelt Elytra are awesome!, no idea what your talking about
comboing is ruined how?
fishing rod is broken no, it may not knock people back, but it can pull players toward you, making people with speed/silt strider easer to catch
teams are impossible to stop shift click with a sword
you used a wood sword, anyone who's ever played mineraft knows that the only wood tool you make is a pickaxe, and that wood swords are useless, you started spamming at about 40 seconds, no idea what you were trying to prove at 1:00 with the shield, you never even used the axe, and a and a player without armour and a stone axe could beat an iron armored player with an iron sword
Don't worry, mojang is getting death threats from this, so they probably won't add this stuff please, removing spam clicking was the most requested thing for 1.9, weave had it so long that people fail to see that stupidly simple, and don't get me started with how easy mobs were pre 1.9, besides, you can't say RIP PVP with out trying it in 1.9, and there is a kit pvp server, trust me, I have personally tried 1.9 pvp, and I can say from experience, it is rather fun
When all big servers update to 1.9 see you skiddies in CS:GO wut?
If mods delete this I'm gonna laugh
