You Are True The Sheilds Are Op They Should Make Something Different What is Not That Op Like A Melee?
The thing is that sword blocking sucked. This is a much more beneficial alternative. Plus, the servers will make changes to balance out the 1.9 update.

I just took the Minecraft Noob test! Check out what I scored. Think you can beat me?!
Only thing you can *almost* rely on is that a higher version number application is newer. You can't really know what it really means until you take a look at the app yourself. And my prediction for product branding post 1.9 will be "Microsoft Minecraft Office Edition".
Honestly i can't exactly tell WHY i hate this update so much, I just do. Combat feels LESS fun for me since they started. It may be a little better now though. I gave up on MC about two weeks ago and moved over to other games.
I think the biggest issues for me was the simple fact that rather then doing things to make the mobs more interesting they are just NERFING the living crap out of EVERYTHING the player has.
I probably wont be back. It may work great for PvP but "make you do less damage and take more" is not a fun way to go when making a game more challenging.
--Edit--
I would also like to add i dont want to see these changes removed entirly... and i know that seeing all the previous updates that server owners will have some power of the magnitude of these changes, whether it be via settings or command blocks.
I really just cant be bothered to play the game in this current state. I don't give a toot about PvP... But that seems to be about all anyone cares about anymore. Maybe the games just outgrown me?
regardless, i hope it works out and the game does well off it. I hope they give us some new tools so people can find better things to make then PvP minigames.
#1 - If you abandon too much realism, you will have a combat system that makes absolutely no sense (such as one where you are only able to damage an area 50 blocks west to where you are for every swing. Unrealistic, unintuitive, and not fun).
#2 - Shields take 2 seconds to charge (start blocking). I am saying it should block the lower half while not fully charged, rather than the current lack of protection for half-charged/uncharged shields. The large portion of the screen blocked by the shield should be compensated by letting uncharged shields block things.
#3 - As I said, pullback time. Currently, you can still spam-click your weapon, and constantly trigger the knockback and the invulnerability frame. It will just deal 0 damage. What I propose is making sword usage deal absolutely nothing (not even trigger the invulnerability timer and knockback) for a small portion of the recharge time (half would be good).
#4 - Cleave enchantments lets you damage a small area of mobs every time you swing, which should compensate a little for the lack of sword-spam in this patch. Now that axes are both a viable combat weapon and a great anti-shield weapon, there should be some enchantments to support that.
#5 - There are lots of decent, better thought out combat systems than Minecraft. Mount and Blade's combat system is one of them. Skyrim's is another. Even Terraria's combat system is decent. Minecraft's, on the other hand, is badly thought.
How is it badly thought? In short, the effects do not really complement each other or balance each other out in a meaningful fashion. For example, it is entirely possible to completely bypass the sword replenish limitation by having a bow, and using the replenish time to get 1 shot in before immediately switching back to the sword. Despite having a sword cooldown, which is somewhat realistic though badly implemented, the player does not fumble with items.
Also, the AoE knockback is not increased by knockback enchantments, making the bow a much better tool for fending off mobs while your sword recharges.
The axe, which until now has been nothing but a chopping tool, was buffed to the point where it is now a very viable weapon, especially when exploiting bows is taken into account. Well, except it does not have much in the way of enchantments.
In short, swords are now-tier. Axes, on the other hand, suddenly became the best unenchanted weapon in Minecraft since the player can use the recharge time to get 1 shot in (axes also break shields, because Axe is overpowered and needs a nerf).
EDIT: Axe is not actually overpowered, but bows have been since the dawn of Infinity enchantments.
I haven't even got into how infinity bows are the best short-ranged weapon, and how harming potions are completely useless due to bad splash shape, and how it is entirely possible to collide into your tossed potion, and how enchanting is poorly thought-out and is nothing but extreme powercreeping...
Oh, and we do not have much in the way of medium-ranged weapons. Spears will be a nice addition (lower damage than swords but gain a damage multiplier based on how fast your target and you are heading towards each other), though the Shovel could be buffed to perform the same function.
Enchanting really, really needs an overhaul, now that we have tools that double as effective weapons.
Okay, just to mention a few thoughts on this in regards to your point:
1. There's no realism to BEGIN with. Nothing to abandon. Running around swinging your sword at lightspeed like a maniac...and actually succeeding because of it... makes no sense to begin with. Neither does blocking ARROWS with a SWORD. Among piles of other issues that the original combat had. I mean, there's alot of reasons as to WHY people have been so badly wanting it changed since... pretty much always. Minecraft was never meant to be realistic, which is good, because there's not even a small part of it that IS. I dunno about others... but I dont want "realism" in this. There's other games I can go to for that. This is not one of them.
2. Shields blocking anything when NOT being directly used actually doesnt make any sense either. In damn near every game I can think of, you have two forms of defense: 1, completely passive defense, which you dont actually DO anything with, it's simply an attribute that sticks to you, and 2, completely ACTIVE defense, where you must hold down some button or something for the barrier/whatever to be up and actually block things. Most games that have active defense mechanics at all do this. I mean, seriously, the number of games that do this is HUGE. Even Minecraft itself up till now has done this; before the snapshot, simply holding a sword.... which is what does the active blocking.... does not in any conceivable way defend you. You are either blocking an attack from the front with it, or you are blocking nothing at all. Just like in most games. I know Mount & Blade does this differently, but it's an anomaly. In Minecraft, it wouldnt be intuitive at all; it'd just lead to alot of "I dont get it! I clearly hit him there but he took hardly any damage! He wasnt blocking, even! Was it LAG?!?" and stuff like that.
3. Things like the shield charge and pullback time for weapons and the knockback issue are likely to be heavily tweaked and changed over time... this is still quite a long way from release, after all. I think it's best to ignore that bit. I find it annoying myself, but yeah, that's part of the fun of snapshots, hah.
4. Cleave doesnt sound like a bad idea, but.... honestly, the game does NOT need to get easier. It's already too easy. Particularly whenever you have armor, which has been dramatically OP in survival mode for.... as long as I can remember. Hell, I *never* use diamond armor in particular, because it's like inputting the Godmode cheat in Doom; it doesnt matter what hits me.... I'm not taking damage from it. The defense values are just too extreme, and even on Hard Mode, most enemies hardly do any to begin with. Hell, I dont even enchant iron armor, as I think that pushes it too far also. Even on Hard, the game offers little challenge. If I want challenge, I *have* to use mods. I'd really, really love for this update to change that... If they could come up with a way for such a "cleave" effect to work that somehow DOESNT just make it easier, I'd be all for it.
5. Better combat systems are out there, but.... not as much as you might think. Mount & Blade can be interesting, but for most players, it just boils down to 1. Be on horse, 2, have a lance, 3, run forward, 4, crash lance into bad guy, 5, ???, and 6, profit and repeat. The game is fun, but the combat honestly still seems pretty mindless to me much of the time, just not AS mindless as in many games. Terraria on the other hand.... uuuuuuugh. I have that, I've spent alot of time with it. Combat usually boils down to.... just click alot. Hell, once you're more powered up, most of the time, you dont even need to dodge! You become such an OP balance disaster that it doesnt matter what is happening; just fly around entirely at random and click vaguely in the direction of the enemy. You'll win the fight. That's against BOSSES, mind you; it's even stupider against normal enemies. But even at lower levels.... click and swing, click and swing. Same as in Minecraft. That being said, those games are still pretty darn good, eh? Not perfect... but for many, they end up being fun. Particularly Mount & Blade, for me. Also... this is Minecraft, of all things. They dont dare take the complexity too far here. This isnt meant to be that sort of game, and combat is only part of the equation to begin with. It *needs* to remain very accessible, as many players rely on the fact that it is. I can think of plenty of changes that I'd *like* to have, but.... I dont think they'd genuinely be a good idea, as many of those ideas would alienate alot of players by taking it too far.
That being said, I can agree with some other things....
1. Splash potions are bloody stupid. Always have been. They have no range! You can very easily hit yourself with them, as you said. Just... argh! I love the idea of hitting mobs with status effects or whatever... but it makes little sense with no range. I'm glad to hear of the ability to stick those on arrows with 1.9, though I guess it isnt fully in yet.
2. Infinity bows.... too much, indeed. Way too much.
3. Enchanting I've no problem with.... for tools and such. On armor, it gets a bit silly. On weapons, it's not very necessary; you're strong enough to start with, after all.
4. .....using a shovel as a spear sounds HILARIOUS. And fun. Let's do that.
Omg, this ruins PvP so bad, all of you people saying the current 1.7/1.8 pvp doesnt use skill..... Well your wrong, first off the current "pros" actually need aim, And no u dont need to click 20 times a second (and yes that is possibe without hacks it is called jitter clicking) to beat someone or even a hacker! As a long time faction/pvp server player i do hate these updates so do people who actually pvp... So please if you dont play HCF or any kind of faction server please dont reply to this comment since you probs dont know what 'pvp' is.

I don't care about the PvP. Minecraft will be great with the new PvP system. What pisses me off though is the feeling of not needing any mods. As a programmer, it freaking pisses me of that you can now create everything I'm doing in my mod with a custom resource pack and some command blocks. Grr...
Okay for all the people who are hating 1.9s Hit-Wait-Hit Its a Tag jeb_ even says it is a Tag so STOP complaining about it and move on its not the end of Minecraft people they might even remove it or make it so its like 1.3 seconds with the sword or whatever so please don't rage heck i LOVE the new pvp system =) but think what you think its not like your going to do something bad to yourself so please deal with it..
As so many people have stated there will always be haters but what they don't understand is that change is inevitable its something that none of us can control...
I bet someone at Microsoft said the same thing about the new desktop in Windows 8.
Curious, though, has Mojang put out any information about the "whys" of what they are trying to achieve, or are they just putting out snapshots and letting the player base provide the rationale?

I was just playing Team Deathmatch on Mineplex (1.8.8) and I asked everyone what they thought of the new 1.9 snapshots (just out of curiosity) and everyone hated them. I tried to make them realize that now it takes tactics (attacking people from behind that have shields) and timing (no more spam clicking) but they all thought it ruined PvP (they were all ignorant to what I said and resorted to "It always did take skill" in defense). Although there are a few quirks that need to be sorted out as mentioned earlier in the thread, I am very fond of it, and if we are lucky, it may deter the 9 year olds! Haha, just being sarcastic, don't kill me.

Also forgot to mention, if someone were to sneak up on you while you were looking in a chest before 1.9, you would get hit 3-4 times easily and therfore get killed in no time. But nnow, the "weapon cooldown" system actually gives the players a chance to fight. Thats something else thats getting the haters stirred up.
As so many people have stated there will always be haters but what they don't understand is that change is inevitable its something that none of us can control for me personally the change's to combat are a good thing its been so long with the old mechanic and people were too op with diamond gear it took all the fun out of it personally i like the idea that i'm vulnerable and have to watch my back rather than not have to worry about mobs swarming it will make you think more tactful.
As far as the updates go i do think they haven't listened to the community as they should have we have been asking for new items new mobs new worlds more adventure! The shulker or what ever its called is laughable it has to be one of the worst mobs i have seen in any game it looks out of place in the game and its attack just doesn't make sense to me.
Also the hearts when you hit mobs i hope someone at mojang see's these comments people are really not liking them and they need to understand WE ARE NOT ALL 5 YEARS OLD!
If all they ever do is add new worlds and new items and new mobs, Minecraft will gain horrible feature creep, and it will start being more like modded Minecraft instead of the vanilla game.
The shulker is epic. It's not "out of place", and you may have forgotten it's a mob exclusive to the End. Oh, the attack doesn't make sense? All right, everyone, petition to remove the walking plants with human body and four tiny legs that explode for some reason! The worst mob you've seen in any game? Now you're just hating.
What the heck is so wrong with the hearts? I mean, sure, I don't "like" them in the sense of "OMG Minecraft just had an update and BROWN HEARTS" but I really don't see why people are flaming Mojang about it.
What does being five years old have to do with anything?

I just don't like how the armor is nerfed. Sure, iron armor shouldn't be able to protect you very well seeing how easy it is to get. maybe it should only have 5 armor bars. But they nerfed fully enchanted diamond armor?! With the best enchants!?! That's ridiculous. That means you can't reach a point in the game where you are invulnerable, even after spending 200 hours on a world. Most other stuff is good however.
PVP, as it stands, doesn't have to change. All of these new features and changes are completely reversible with the given vanilla map making tools in the snapshots. Seeing as almost everyone who plays on factions servers seems to not want the changes, I'm sure those in charge of these servers (should they even find a reason to update to 1.9) will likely fix it to keep it the same.
Beside that, I don't see that it would "ruin" it. I see that the new system would change it in a BIG way, which would be really refreshing to see.
No, in fact, adding a way to be effectively invulnerable AT ALL, unless it's for a ridiculously short period of time, is always OP no matter what. In fact, one of the biggest balancing issues WAS that diamond armor was too effective.
I agree, Diamond armour was always to overpowered, and being invulnerable, as fun as it sounds, takes a lot away from the gameplay. Like someone also said earlier in the thread, I onlyuse unenchanted iron armour because that gives me some protection, but I still have to be careful.

Well, Mojang are only so far into the 1.9 snapshots, so they will DEFINITELY change and balance some stuff. Its like when they nerfed AFK farms, but they reverted to the old mob drop system after they got so much backlash. If they implement something the whole community absolutely despises, then they will most likely listen to our feedback and change it. Thats the whole intention of snapshots anyway, just to see how the community reacts to it so they don't release a whole update full off bad content.
The thing is that sword blocking sucked. This is a much more beneficial alternative. Plus, the servers will make changes to balance out the 1.9 update.
