I'm still confused as to who exactly this is supposed to be targeted towards. It is essentially a MCPE port designed for Windows 10 devices.
People who already own the standard PC can just keep playing the original on Windows 10. People who already own Pocket Edition can just keep that. The only use for it I see is to get a free version of Pocket Edition, but if you already have the original, why bother? It would make sense if they're about to abandon the original Pocket Edition and focus on updating Windows 10 Edition. Has that happened and I just don't know?
Right now, I just see it as a waste of time and resources that could be put towards updating the "real" Minecraft and the console port. Does the thing even support mods/texture packs/skins?
They say it's for cross compatibility but I'm pretty sure the obvious answer is MS simply doesn't want the game running on Java anymore. Every other version of Minecraft runs it in C++ but not Notch's original version he made in Java, so the logical choice for Mojang is to take the PE version which is already coded in C++ and make it as similar to the Java version as they can.
Once the Windows 10 version catches up, I assume the Java version will eventually be phased out and left available for modding. Quite frankly, the Windows 10 version runs phenomenally better than the Java version due to how it was created to originally run on phones, plus it has a ton of small features not on in the Java version. So there's that.
Could you elaborate on this? The wiki doesn't mention many positive differences, and I'm interested.
There's quite a lot of differences actually. There are some bigger differences, like that fact that boats actually work, they don't break, can carry a mob on the back like a Minecart, and have a paddle system.
Then there's a lot of smaller things, like fallen treetrunks trees, vines on oak trees, abandoned mineshafts in mesa mountains, better looking swamps. Villages generate with bridges so they don't get destroyed in water, squids spray ink when damaged and apply blindness, etc.
The graphics and visuals in general are more polished, Zombies use an attack animation where they swing their arms, smooth lighting affects water, sun light is more dynamic, items held in your hand have an idle animation, sand and gravel give off particles if they are about to fall, etc.
The rendering system on the Java version is pretty much inferior to the Pocket Edition/Windows 10, I think that was admitted by a PE dev.
The way it is right now, basically it's just PE ported to PC. This means much less content than PC (although it does have its own features, like better squids, boats with paddles, better world gen, etc.). But the main reason why it's even a thing is because its performance is vastly better than the Java Edition. There's also going to be cross-platform compatibility so that PC, PE and Xbox One users can all play together. Eventually, it will catch up to the Java Edition in content so that's probably when Java Edition is going to die out. Maybe sooner if we can get mods on the Windows 10 Edition.

Windows 10 apps can run on the computer and windows phone, so they are technically still working on MCPE, just for window phones though.
Right now, I just see it as a waste of time and resources that could be put towards updating the "real" Minecraft and the console port. Does the thing even support mods/texture packs/skins?
Why can't the windows 10 version become the new minecraft? They can make a Mac version as well. The windows 10 version runs way better then java, just watch Antvenom's video on it.
It is easier to get custom skins on Windows 10 then it is to get them in java, you can do it in game.
The "real" version does not support mods, why would this version? The only reason you have mod support for java is because someone decided to make their own API for minecraft, mojang does not support mods and any version.
This windows 10 edition is just some spawn of Microsoft, to try to get more DLC skin pack money from people on windows 10. Probably the same reason MCPE got skin packs. Probably next for PC.

You know you can upload any skin you want on to Windows 10 edition?
Gavinski37, you're up against people who just flat out don't trust Microsoft any more. Use all the rational logic you want, people just have trouble trusting large corporations after everything that has happened in the last few years.
DLC has started to ruin the experience for many gamers who don't want to have to buy more than the game they payed for once already. It has gotten to where people feel like features that should have been in the game in the first place are left out just to be sold at a further profit later. So, the fear is that the ability to upload ones personal skin to the game will be lost as the Win 10 Edition moves forward. The fear is that the game will have code added to make it impossible to install anything other than 'Microsoft-approved' content, and that such a label would only be eavailable for content that had to be bought, for more real money. People hate and fear the micro-transaction and the superfluous DLC, and watch for it with a vigilance that verges on paranoia.
And you know what? I don't blame the gamers for doing so. Market research has made it so companies can make sure to bleed our wallets for every cent that we are even grudgingly willing to part with. What used to be included in the basic-model is now an add-on that cost extra, because they know that they can get us to pay for it.
However, it is also possible that the Win10 version will get the mod API instead of the Java version, to attract more modders to it and thus also more players.
Let's be honest here. We'll get the mod API when Halflife 3 comes out.
That said, we got "promises" that we were going to get mod and plugin API. Those never happened and likely never will in the future. Of course, if they do make the poor decision of phasing out the current Minecraft there would be such hysteria and backlash that they would have no choice, or the Java version would be kept updated by fans such as in the case of Toontown. Keep in mind though that this is Windows 10 edition. Not windows 7, 8, Mac OSX, or Linux. So I really don't know for sure that these guys are thinking. Also in case of misinterpretation, this is not bashing anyone's posts.
When I found out that soon when mcpe goes to 0.12.1 that I can play mcpe servers on my pc I got really happy since my friend doesn't have a pc and only has a ipad this will mean we can play together
I find it extremely enjoyable. The world generator reminds me kinda of oldschool minecraft versions. And also it feels a lot smoother.
Wonder why... Oh right c++.
I found out today when fighting a zombie that there is no longer a time between the hits. I can just slaughter zombies, skeletons, spiders, creepers and other animals in seconds :D. There is no blocking mechanic in it though.
I like the new zombie villager model. I didn't see it in old minecraft 1.8.8 so its new.

I haven't bothered with it since I didn't upgrade the PC to win 10

I occasionally make textures/models for random people. Contributed to: Tinker's Construct, Growthcraft, and Animals+
PixelQuest 2, my new 1.10 RPG/rougelike-inspired modpack, is coming soon!

I noticed that the rain in minecraft is quiet and is a lot smoother
I guess that's new
Anoher addition is that zombie villagers look different
It scared me a bit because I didn't know what it was for a while
Are those zombies curable?
I haven't found a golden apple yet, so I dunno
EDIT: Yes they are
My God. People, it's MCPE for WINDOWS TABLETS. Since Windows 10 goes on all Windows devices, it's meant for the tablet. GET IT RIGHT PEOPLE.
Its still pretty fun on the desktop
I am unusually hyped for the cross platform multiplayer though
You can just hold a and d to swim forward
