I can confirm 100% that all hostile mobs now have the ability to see through solid blocks. This basically means as long as you're in range of a hostile mob, they will begin to track you down, notably Zombies since they have a large aggro range.
This makes caving pretty dangerous now. Mobs will know to immediately react to you as you turn corners. Creepers seem pretty terrifying now.
Creepers are about to become absolutely terrifying.
Yeah it's some pretty serious business. They used to see through blocks in beta but it's a lot more horrifying now that they have actual pathfinding. My underground base is being surrounded by zombies and creepers on the other side of the walls. Skeletons also end up pulling back their bow while they are still behind walls and immediately let go as soon as it's possible to hit you.
I doubt they actually spent a year on this stuff. More like months. The last year simply wasn't a good year for Mojang for game development.
Microsoft acquisition plans
EULA drama
Bukkit drama
Negotiations with Microsoft
TheMogMiner being fired/quitting (Still no one knows what happened)
Uncertainty regarding the Microsoft acquisition
Notch finally selling the game to Microsoft
Minecon
And finally, the dev team finding time to actually create content worth putting into a snapshot. If all of the former never happened I'd imagine they would have gotten much further than they are now.
FYI, all hostile mobs can now see through solid blocks now, sorta like in beta. Discovered that very quickly after going through a cave.
Seems kinda weird they'd do that, but I guess it solves a lot of issues with hostile mobs not seeing the player or losing them.
I suggest at least creepers would see only through transparent blocks, like windows. Now it can be like that: imagine a newb being in a dirt shack. He peeks through the hole in the dirt shack. He notices: day! Yay! I can go outside now. He digs out from the dirt shack. And a creeper blows him up.

Guess what. Armor durability removed. Read Jeb's tweet and the news post. I lost all what was left of my excitement for 1.9.
Yeah. Hey Jeb, you are aware that you can have that attribute number change, right? It's pretty easy to set it as a variable that corresponds to the actual armor points. But nope, it's more important to be customizable than to be fun!
Once again, survival players lose out to mapmakers.

Lets not overreact to a change in a snapshot that was meant to allow testing of a new feature. I know he didn't sound real committed at this time to putting durability back in, but that doesn't mean they won't. Why the angst over this anyway? Armor is less protective now, so not as big a deal that it won't break.

He meant that armor protection value would not diminish with durability...

There is no angst here. Just vague disapproval. I suppose now that armor's less protective, it matters a bit less balance-wise.

You forgot to add to that list working on a bunch of useless stuff for April fools instead of actual content. For the most part yes I do agree they were very busy though.
This new stuff they are doing with the armor is too much. I don't like it. They don't need to change everything about combat for it to be a combat update.

I wanted to see Monument Blocks in half slabs, and stairs. They should have at least finished that before added new blocks.
Did they actually make Enderman scary in 15W36A? Or is it a false alarm?
Any changes to boats make it in this snapshot?

I tried it with terrible results. I gave my wife my glasses for a second, a creeper showed up and now my wife is pregnant.
Stupid 3D..

False alarm, still buggy as hell.
Does that mean the game is harder than it used to be? A bigger challenge?

Somewhat. You'll be swarmed by all kinds of mobs now, and it'll be harder to escape. Their not as dumb anymore.
Gah, darnit Mojang..
Mobs can see through solid blocks now???
Creepers are about to become absolutely terrifying.
Wish placing blocks directionally was easier? Check out this suggestion!

More reason to light things up I guess.
