I absolutely love the new update and my two favorite upgrades are the farming of villagers, giving them a purpose and the addition of rabbits that can be farmed and bred with carrots.
I am glad it's working for you but for me and my son, version 1.8 is horrible. On all three of our pcs it lags horribly and is no fun. I've tried a lot of things but nothing has solved the lag issue. I know many are having the same issues with 1.8. It's not worth playing for us right now.
Hmm... That is strange that 1.8 would lag on 3 separete computers, because it works fine on my 2 computers. Maybe either uninstall minecraft and reinstall, remove mods, or to reduce lag on Minecraft you can do this: Paricles: minimum, Graphics: Fast, Bobbing Off, Clouds Off.
It is not odd that 1.8 lags. It lags for most of the people that have tried it. I'm not running it with any mods and it deosn't matter if my nvidia is set for performance and the video options are set to fast. Something is broken with 1.8.
For me I am actually getting a 20fps boost and I am comfortably sitting at 60fps without any mods whatsoever (ie Optifine). All I had to do was tweak some options.

A lot of different video and memory options have been added. try configuring them to the best of your ability, also allocate more memory to minecraft through the profile editor.

Are you sure about that? I think it actually stayed the same or improved for a lot of people. It works fine for me on the PCs that I've played it on. I actually had more problems with lag when 1.7.2 came out than I did when 1.8 came out. Be careful when making broad generalizations based on your own experience. There is a lot of talk here in the forums about lag but I think it is because some who didn't have it before now have it and people with problems tend to complain a lot more loudly than people who have none.
On my bad PC, I went from 30 fps with short render, no smooth lighting, and fast render settings to a solid 60 fps with far render, max smooth lighting, and fancy rendering option.

Have you seen the polls on this very forum? I am not only basing my comment on my own experience with 3 pcs but from the multitude of posts as well as the poll.

I haven't tried 64-bit Java yet, may try that. I have reduced Render Distance to 10 on one system and 5 on another to make the game playable.

If you need some more memory though

VBO's either help, or do nothing at all.

Have you seen the polls where most say they have worse performance and lag with 1.8?
Has nothing to do with settings or memory. There is something wrong with the 1.8 chunks, or chunks loading.

1. VBOs on.
2. VSync off.
3. 64-Bit Java.
4. Allocating at least 2 GB to Mincraft.
