Minecraft is not medieval-themed!!! As a matter of fact, it doesn't have a set time. And when and WHY did putting reponses in the quote, especially long ones, become a trend in the Suggestions? It's rather inconvenient, mainly since the OP has to gather your quote up manually. Avatar made by Endergirl!

I have never had problems with 1.8. In fact, on my four to five year old non-gaming desktop, I've seen a performance increase compared to the 1.7 series, and the dedicated graphics card isn't the best either.
And my 7 computers basically debunk the notion that you need a powerful computer to play the game at decent framerates.
At my lowest end, I had an old Dell Optiplex 755 (Core 2 duo @ 2.8GHz) and an Nvidia GT210 graphics card. had to tone down some settings, but it worked well.
Currently I also play on a Dell Optiplex 960 (Core 2 Duo @ 3GHz) and an Nvidia GT630 graphics card. I play with 8 render distance, and basically everything else turned on, and get a stable 60FPS. It hiccups from time to time, but its very playable.
Mojang needs to go back to open gl or whatever they used before 1.8 because 1.7 was fine... I was only able to play at the LOWEST SETTINGS POSSIBLE IN 1.7.10 and i got like what.. 25 fps.. and for some reason i got like five more when using a 32 x 32 texture pack.. but at 1.8 in STILL THE LOWEST SETTING FLIPPING POSSIBLE i get like 5 and multiplayer is basically UNPLAYABLE... nice job Mojang, and instead of the bountiful update they should call it the "Hey guys lets add a ton of features but make multiplayer Unplayable!!" Update.. Yea thats how bad it is
You obviously have no idea of what you are talking about, all Mojang did was re-write the game's rendering engine, also, multiplayer does not make the game any less playable - it's the players the game has to render.

...but Minecraft taxes the system with the revolving red stone lamps. I guess I really don't under stand why both my PC i7 Intel, ASUS Mb with 8Gb Ram, Nvidia Graphics and Win 8.1, Minecraft v. 1.8.2 Pre 6, or the PS3, Minecraft v1.14(TU20), have trouble with the red stone lamps. The frame rate drops on both machines inducing lag. Turn the lamps off, no problem no lag. I did not see the lag on my PC until v 1.8. Maybe Windows 10 will work better.
The only theory I have is that Minecraft is built terribly. I run battlefield 4 ultra settings at 120-180 fps, while Minecraft runs at around 50 or below.

I am a computer Enderman and I am very smart. But my user isn't.

That doesn't sound like Minecraft, for some reason.
Like, I get a solid 60 FPS with BF4 and Minecraft, BF4 on ultra and Minecraft with like a 24 render distance.
Minecraft 1.8 often lags on multiplayer for me, something that will REALLY help is if u lower your chunks. Note: Lowering ur chunks works on singleplayer .
Check your launcher.

Honestly, I feel like people are just finding ways to hate on 1.8.
Not all of us have NASA's computers you know.
Figured it was time for a change.
But hey, yall, what'ya expect from a big update? huh?

Obviously not.
Unless you're inferring that I have a really good computer, which is wrong.

Cast aside your festive doylaks: dragon stuff is about to happen.
Multiplayer is lonely once you understand how it actually works.
Alpha 1.0.4
I have no problems with 1.8, and I get a 300 fps average...
My system specs (Dell XPS 8500):

I See These People With Like 600 FPS Average, And I Think "How Big Is Their Budget!? O_O"

On my new computer, it's better so long as I have VBOs on, but on my old laptop, my performance and frames are much, much worse.
Optifine fixes 99% of my lag problems in 1.8

AND MULTIPLAYER
Minecraft is built of java, and uses less cpu memory. It's naturally going to be slower than a full games you download from places like steam
it is lagging for me
I dont see a difference cuz I am always getting 100+ fps and my monitor is 60 hz
