Hmm, updating java and Optifine seems to fix the problem. I feel stupid now. FPS hovers around 35-40.
Still, not as good as what I get in 1.6.4, but it's much better than what I got earlier.
This is why I don't think the problem is as bad as people make it out to be.
Losing FPS but still over 60? You have NOTHING to complain about. You cant even notice the drop, toy are just looking at numbers. Most all monitors are capped at 60Hz refresh rate, meaning 60FPS tops, so anything over that, be it 70 or 1000, you wont notice the difference!
And getting 35-40FPS on that ancient graphics card is GOOD. Seriously, you are comparing FPS from 2 vastly different versions of the game. Do you have any understanding of what has changed since then? As features are added, the game WILL get more demanding. This is simple fact here. So if you are getting a stable 35-40, then what on earth are you complaining about? You want you better FPS or new features? You can't have both.
Some people are having serious problems, yes, I understand this, but I feel like most people are complaining over nothing.

1.8 seems to improve my average FPS, but it lowers my overall performance since my computer runs hotter. Longer play sessions start to drag down my machine a lot more than they should. The game also is trying to use my hyperthreads for certain functions like internal server updates, which introduces a lot of unnecessary lag.

That... isn't how hyperthreading works. It expedites tasks to avoid a bottleneck of a task that is taking a while. So if anything, it would improve performance, not degrade from it.

i have lag spikes even with optifine. on 1.7, 120-260FPS. but in 1.8, 25-70FPS. note: i use the graphics card GeForce 7500 SE/GS 7200, hd 500 GB, RAM of 4GB, win 8.1 64 bit and java 7 and 8

Why do people post their hard drive capacity like it is relevant?

I don't know really. It should be increased because of that weird thing with chunks, where the only chunks that load are the ones within your field of view. Good idea unless you like staring into the abyss every time you turn around.
And also, I fixed my world (My buildings were reverted to their original state, and the seed was there as if I just started out in it. Although my Inventory is still there (A stack of Iron and a Diamond sword).
-And a desert temple spawned with no loot in the plains Biome near me.
-This should have been called the "lag and bugs with sea monsters update". Nice job Mojang.
300FPS! That will overload and be choppy, I would sugest to use VSync it will help keep your frame-rate at a healthy 30-40fps.
Yes, I agree, It has been a bit more laggy then usual. But that is usually only when I first get on, because after 10 minutes or so, my game is lagg free!
My performance seems to have dropped a bit. Used to get flat out 60FPS(I set that at the maximum), but now I usually get around 30-40FPS, sometimes even 20FPS. It also seems to use up more of my memory that I associated to Minecraft.
1.8 made Minecraft unplayable for me. I would love to see Mojang do some actual work to fix their code rather than assume none of their players know how to download 64-bit java and create a whole new launcher dedicated just to that.
just enable the particle effects. options>video settings>animations.

Nope. Still just as horrible for me. It's a total slideshow.
But something of interest is that generating a new world is taking tremendously longer than ever before.
After I hit the create world button, I wait about 3 minutes before the first chunks load in, but my framerate stays at 60.
I make these things...

I blame Mojang laziness and Microsoft.

VBOs have helped, Optifine 1.8.X hasn't helped (made FPS worse)
I just installed optifine. I didn't change a single setting and minecraft is running at 80-90 fps. I'm so happy right now.
