I, for on, am going to wait until Optifine updates to 1.8.
That of course won't happen until MCP updates.
And that of course won't happen because SeargeDP doesn't want us to make mods.
Really, that's total - considering that Searge is the one who makes MCP
And hey - look at this!
I have to say that is incrediblely fast compared to 1.7... especially considering the buyout and all ("oh noes M$ is going to ban modding!1!"), nevermind the much larger changes made to 1.8 (though most of the code (haven't looked yet) is probably not properly deobfuscated; even in 1.7 they didn't bother properly deobfuscating code that was hardly changed from 1.6.4)
It's worse, at about equal or less to what it was in 1.7.4 without optifine. That is to say, unplayable, running at what feels like 4-10 fps. I increased the ram, but I don't think that helps considering I'm capped with a 32 operating system.
A damned shame, they boasted this update would finally fix minecraft's atrocious performance. This computer can run Batman: Arkham City just fine.
The update has definitely improved fps and performance, but there is a bug that causes massive lag when you're near a lot of water. That being said, the results of the polls are based on how many people play near large bodies of water versus people who play away from large bodies of water.
For me, the inclusion of that VBO bit I finally have frame rates similar to what I had with 1.3.2; which is 30-60 average 40-45 roughly. This is with the final release.
The prereleases that mode, VBO, was still buggy. So basically without the frames are about the same as 1.7 period. 1.7 and all the patches after that my frames are not that great. 1.6.4 was a bit better than 1.7. Everything after 1.3.2 just got worse for me. 1.4 being unplayable as well 1.5.
So I can finally say I have a reasonable amount of FPS to actually play the game, without optifine. That is one thing I needed in order to at least stabalize the fps in 1.6-1.7. I am glad about this update, even not all got a fps boost, at least some did. Like myself.
The performance remained the same roughly, with very few spikes noticeable. I guess that is what it meant by that poll option. smooth cpu usage. From what I can tell that part has remained the same.
Just glad I can finally play it on my pc.

My First World, always getting back to is a pleasure I enjoy with each new update that brings in more things to add in.

Your 32 bit OS doesn't help: it means 32 bit Java instead of 64 bit Java, and 64 bit Java will give a significant improvement over 32 bit Java for this problem.
1.8 is the worst update! It lags sooooooooooo much! I don't know why Mojang ever created that update.... It should be called "The Lagful Update".
It just depends on your computer. I am just fine with my frames in 1.8 exact same as 1.7. As some computers like my moms laptop which improved(it went from 3-4 fps in 1.7 to 30 steady in 1.8 so big improvement) then there are the computers which got worse fps then in 1.7

Not exactly; not every performance issue is related to water. Even in a water-less world some friends of mine and I still lag and the FPS and performance is way below compared to how it is in 1.7.
Mojang won't come out with a 1.8.2 fix for this because of Microsoft.

Peter: Yeah, climb any mountain, rent any video, dial any phone. And not just our phone, Lois, other people's phones. Decent phones, God-fearing phones, phones that everybody else gave up on, but we knew better because we were a team!
Brian: What the hell are you talking about?
I'm sorry, it was just how I feel. I'm just surprised that Mojang doesn't seem to care about bug fix updates anymore since Microsoft took them over. They were on top of that back when 1.7 released.

I posted in this thread a while back when I was having severe lag with 1.8 on my SMP server. On 1.7 I was getting around 30 fps but with 1.8, I was getting around 10 fps with MAJOR lag spikes, and horrendous amounts of tick skipping.
Now I get around 50 fps on the same server with absolutely no lag. My fix was putting in the "nogui" line in the .bat file that starts the server. The Java GUI seemed to make the game lag horribly for me, but when running the server on the command prompt (nogui), I get no lag whatsoever.
Go to the Minecraft wiki for setting up servers, and scroll down to the "Starting the Server" section. It will tell you everything you need to know about setting up the .bat file without the java gui.
As for single-player, I don't seem to be lagging at all. One upgrade I suggest is switching to Java 64-bit. You can check your Java Version in-game by pressing F3 (debug screen), and looking in the top right corner of the text. x32 is 32 bit, and x64 is 64 bit. It makes a world of a difference to run on 64-bit Java. You may need to update your browser to 64-bit for it to work, and only update to 64-bit if you have a 64-bit operating system.
A poll to see how many users are experiencing lower frame rate and how many are experiencing higher frame rate. It is widely disputed whether 1.8 has increased or decreased average frame rate. Let's settle it, because I'm sure everyone's fed up with the endless posts.
Yeah it did decrease my performance and frame rate. I get 60fps in 1.7.10 but in 1.8 it goes down when ever I sprint jump and or it rains.
Just so you know, I am playing Minecraft with a gaming computer.
My performance was stable around 350-400fps, and now in 1.8, I get stuttering everywhere and barely over what feels like 20fps. Weird part: It says I'm getting ~450fps.

TheMasterCaver's First World - possibly the most caved-out world in Minecraft history - includes world download.
TheMasterCaver's World - my own version of Minecraft largely based on my views of how the game should have evolved since 1.6.4.
Why do I still play in 1.6.4?

1.7.10-Max settings, no vsync 120-140 fps
1.8-lowest settings, vsync off, VBO on, classic superflat, standing still 10-30 fps
I have had the same fps from 2.0 to 1.7.10
eh, rabbits aren't that important anyway.
