well to be honest i find this update very very poor almost 1 year and there is nothing that great in the update.
now if every update goes at 1.8 pace and adds not much well = R.I.P minecraft

Before an update: "They're taking too long to make updates! I hate Mojang!" After an update: "This update sucks! I hate Mojang!"
Rinse and repeat.
Yeah, that's only true if you combine everything anyone ever said and pretend in your mind it was said by a single person, in order to create an entirely fictional argument that people are hypocrites.
Meanwhile, in the real world, people will have different opinions. Surprise!
99 little bugs in the code, 99 little bugs
Take one down, patch it around
127 little bugs in the code
Fixing bugs creates bugs, adding new content creates bugs, a lot of things make bugs and they can't fix all of them.
That's why we have unit tests and a test driven development policy available, neither of which Notch did at the time as far as I know. Bug fixes that have side effects will not go unnoticed in a well unit tested codebase. Your exaggerated example does not work as an excuse to not fix bugs, one can not fault Mojang for bugs they try to fix but the fix backfires, like with the notorious lighting glitch, but one can fault them for bugs they ignore altogether.
The codebase itself is a big reason why 1.8 took such a long time, the guys spent a lot of time refactoring the codebase, adding unit tests, etc. All in preparation for the modding interface and to make future developments easier. It will be interesting to see how things pan out in the near future.
This has been one of my arguments as well - they add something new but fail to extend it to all categories of items leaving these things unfinished indefinitely.
Wood doors and fences of 6 kinds but not wood trapdoors or other things made of wood.
New stone variants but no stairs or other items made of those stones.
Underwater temple blocks but no stairs or slabs.
One villager gets a "brain" but none of the others do.
Why bother adding unfinished things to an update? It seems like something 10 year old amateur mod makers would do.
So much facepalm.
You're saying that it's unfinished, yet it's taken too long. So you're pretty much telling them to take more time to finish, so that you can complain some more about them taking so long. Your argument is invalid.
I don't even know why you're still here. If you have such a genuine hate for Minecraft and Mojang, then go play your crappy "Tankionline" game.

but if it takes them a year to added those features yet miss out on other features that go hand in hand with them (like the trap doors he said) it does not make much sense? plus how could this update take so long there was no game changing feature example 1.7 would make sense if it took a year to come out but not this update

Most of this sorry update is just little visual and unimportant stuff that mod developers have made in a week. Also the new default skin looks horrible. As does the new model
Considering the great vastness of this game and they only charge you a one time fee of $24, no one should complain. The possibilities and hours you can put into this game is never-ending. And with this update? It's just simply amazing and I am grateful that they don't charge a monthly fee like they could. Mojang only has a handful of developers, so the time is clearly justified. Unless any of you know how to make Minecraft to what it is from complete scratch, no one should really complain because without them, we wouldn't even be playing MC right now.
First of all, creating the models and doing the the coding does take some time. Plus, they have other games to work on more than just minecraft. Mojang is a company, They gotta more games to attract more gamers than just minecraft. Also they have iPad/IPod touch, XBox, and Playstation versions as well. So this means it's gotta take some time. Plus, adding shaders or better world generation, It's very cool but, it doesn't feel minecrafty to be added. besides there's plenty of mods that do that for you. and mojang added A TON of updates, it wasn't just new mobs and commands. Anyways, don't mean to be picky but, it didn't take a year to create. Sure it was close but that 65 days away from being a year. Besides all of the staff of Mojang have a life to, and its not just minecraft...
You're saying that it's unfinished, yet it's taken too long. So you're pretty much telling them to take more time to finish, so that you can complain some more about them taking so long.
I don't think that is the point Leslie was making. Mojang simply open up too many categories for a single update. They could have saved some of the stuff for 1.9 and focused more on the smaller subset of additions for 1.8, releasing new features that are more finished and consistent with the rest of the game without the update taking longer to release.

You could just change your skin to Steve if it bothers you so much. You won't even notice the Alex skin to begin with if you use a custom skin.

So that negates anyone's right to complain about anything, ever. Because you can always say "well if you can't make it yourself, you shouldn't complain."
Well, how about applying that same logic to yourself? Stop complaining about other people. When you can create a perfect human being, then you have a right to say something. Until then, cork your fork hole.
See how that argument works? Meaning, it doesn't.
Mojang makes millions and millions just on the licensing of plush dolls and toys. That money is clearly NOT being put back into the development effort.

Yeah, and I didn't say everyone did this either. But this kind of thing happens very often, from the same exact people. And no, I wasn't just showing that people can be hypocrites, but also that people tend to whine about almost everything no matter how trivial it actually is...this thread is proof enough of that.
If that's what you got out of what I wrote, I blame your first grade teacher.
Java was never intended to handle 3D gaming, much less an infinite 3D sandbox game. That's why Call of Duty isn't written in Java. Java relies on the CPU, not the GPU, which overtaxes the system and allows valuable hardware to sit unused. Add to that their bad code, and you have a rotten mix.
Java + bad Java = lousy game platform.
Wait what, are you kidding me? You know what.... Why don't you make a game makes millions. Lots of people use java and it not just some shooter game. Sure COD looks cool, but considering how many first person shooters there are, and how many games of cod there are, it's really not that unique IDEA WISE, I didn't say gameplay. I mean sure, there's a ton of open-world sandbox games. But minecraft is the one that started the craze (Well at least in 2010 lol) that lead to what it is now. Plus do you think this is bad coding? http://www.minecraftforum.net/forums/mapping-and-modding/minecraft-mods/1280299-sonic-ethers-unbelievable-shaders-v10-1 No, don't say that this is not Mojang. It wasn't MADE by mojang but it was used as base coding to what sonic ethers is now.
Anyways, sorry for the rant.... I just needed a little vent...

Show some proof (one person exhibiting what you are saying happens "very often") or it appears you are just whining yourself.
Well the self entitled crap is flowing on this thread i see. Last I checked Mojang hasn't made us pay for a single one of these updates. Many game companies by now would have issued expansion packs for new content that they would be charging you.
As to the content in this update, lets take a look at it. A retooling of the graphics, several new blocks and new variations of old blocks. New Mobs, New Boss, New Dungeon (with new blocks). A reorganization of enchanting (lapis finally has a use beyond dyeing a few sheep). New map commands and other commands. A much more diverse map generation system. Etc., etc.
The complaint of this taking to long and comparing it to other updates? take a look at the 1.6.1 update. roughly 3 months by Legend's post and the mainly just added carpets, horses, and their accessories.
Seriously for the amount of stuff provided in this update, for the fact that it is FREE, those who are complaining about this are coming off as a bit petulant. Maybe Mojang should charge for these updates so that the cheapskates who love to comment at no cost can move on to other games and disparage those companies hard work instead.
Have a nice day.
If Mojang never updated Minecraft again then much of the Minecraft community would leave. Minecraft needs to update so that people keep buying it, but at the same time they need to release GOOD updates.
You could just change your skin to Steve if it bothers you so much. You won't even notice the Alex skin to begin with if you use a custom skin.
Yes, but it was very unnecessary for them to add Alex because he/she looks terrible. New players who have no idea about skins would get an impression; Mojang should have kept Steve as the only default skin.
I am quite disappointed that during this year, many mods were released this year that hold much more interesting and useful content than our lame 300 day update.
Today I looked in depth of the new mapmaker commands that were added; many of them are useless (such as the command that detects how many times you've talked to a villager, or the replacing commands). Are there any mapmakers here that actually find any of the commands useful? Many of them were stolen from SinglePlayer commands, or something you could do in MCedit. The most useful thing I found was the worldborder and the fill command.
Read the damn changes. http://minecraft.gamepedia.com/1.8
If you are planning to make a suggestion, please read this.
If you want to know more, you can read this.
For those who complain about post-Beta generation, you might want to see this.

I have a custom skin enabled, but the twig-like arms bother me. I hope that doesn't happen to custom ones too.
I'm pretty sure from swimmingbird that you can toggle it just like custom skins. Otherwise yeah, I agree...
