Actually while it does look rather feminine, it is still quite unisex, just more on the female side, there are men with orange hair and men with ponytails, look at Jeb
(Granted he does have a mustache and a beard, but you get the point)
plus the new pain sound is god awful compared to the old one
I think the opposite, actually. And technically the current sound is more of a "hit" sound than a pain grunt like the old one was. If people like the unisex approach, hit sounds are the way to go as opposed to pain grunts.
taking advantage of this topic could someone tell me if there will be a choice between Steve and Alex, because I have a more nostalgic taste an like to play with Steve (because lately have servers that can not load the skin as the realms dungeon).
and one doubts whether each account will have a default skin or will change as the account login
I really like the new skin as a female variant of Steve. More unique then Stephanie However it would be nice if you could choose between Steve and Alex as your default skin somehow, on the website or in the options menu. And on the whole gender debate, I've always kinda ignored that as canon, I know Notch stated it and everything, but in the end Minecraft is a game where you decide the story, Now excuse me while I go write Alex a backstory and how she relates to Steve

Very fought for attention
You can download the steve skin and set that as your default skin.
Something they could do would be to bring back the old sounds with female variant sounds, but then in your "skin customization" (renamed to "avatar customization" for better fit), they could have the gender option. You toggle it, and it reflects sounds made by your player. It could be a simple NBT tag added to the player, and clients would pick up on that, and play the right sounds based on it. Along with that, they could have the toggle-able option for "Slim" or "Beefy" arms. This would eliminate the controversy over female vs male avatars, as well as add more variety by allowing males to have slim characters, and females to have beefy arms, or even just so if someone has a custom skin which on its own is indistinguishable, the sounds could be the give-away.
I doubt Mojang will ever see this, but I think if enough of you agree, and show the results on say, a poll, then they just might implement that.
maybe soon, instead of having to "choose" between preset models, they'll make it so that you can create your own player model. they could probably do this using a similar technique like they used for customized block models in resource packs
I've been hoping for them to add this for a long time. Now regardless of whether or not Steve and Alex are canonically unisex, we can finally say minecraft has more than one protagonist! This will be really good for fan-made media (such as fan-made movies, shows, shorts and whatever else.) Steve can finally have some legitimate character development. This is a dream come true ;). Plus the skinny-armed model. I never really liked Steve's arms. I thought they were too beefy. Despite the fact that my skin is intended to be a dude, I'll probably use the new skin model as soon as Mojang adds a toggle button.
Now if there were a way to download it, to begin customizations.
You don't have to download it separately, it's in the 1.8-pre1.jar file. Open it up, and it's at assets/minecraft/textures/entity/alex.png (in the jar, not in .minecraft).
I've uploaded 2 minor edits to the alex skin in this post.

I never noticed that. That is really cool

Figured it was time for a change.
Putting the CENDENT back in transcendent!
Yeah, anytime a female character is added to a game it's automatically because of "political correctness" and no other reason.
Give me a break.

They do have a texture pack, it's faithful.

Found this picture in one of Jeb's tweets.
Is it what I think it is?
