Hello! I'm not sure if this should be where it is, but a recent update allows you to choose your frame rate in the options menu. I was just wondering if turning your frame rate up to unlimited caused any negative effects.
Uh, I'm sure the frame limit option is not new, it's an old thing and I've got it on Unlimited. If you put it on unlimited the FPS may fluctuate and if you put it on let's say 60 FPS it will be capped and won't reach above, considering you have hardware capable of running Minecraft stable 60 FPS.
It is better to use Vsync instead with FPS set to unlimited because it will lock FPS to your monitor's framerate, usually 60 Hz (FPS) provided you can maintain it above it. Going all-out just makes you computer work harder for no benefit and Vsync is primarily intended to prevent screen tearing, which degrades image quality, especially with fast movement. Of course, if you fall below 60 FPS Vsync will cause FPS to drop to a submultiple of 60, first to 30, then to 20, and so on, so in that case it is better to disable it unless 30 FPS isn't objectionable or screen tearing is; might as well have FPS set to unlimited to get the most out of your computer (Optifine says it always reduces performance when enabled, even if FPS is less).

I have it off because I get input delay (or at least that's what it feels like; something definitely feels bothersome with it on). I do get screen tearing, but it only bothers me a little bit. I'd like to do away with it, but I don't know how other than v-sync, and the input delay bothers me many times more.
I'm no expert, but I've read that setting a cap to the frame rate will reduce your FPS somewhat, even if it's not at the cap. So, say, your computer is capable of 60 FPS, but if you set a cap, then you'll get less than 60 FPS, even if the cap was set higher at, for example, 80. Therefore, I have read, it's best to keep it set at "unlimited" unless you experience visible screen-tearing (in which case you should set it to V-SYNC) or you're recording (in which case you'll want to set it at whatever the framerate of your recording is, so you don't get screen-tearing in the final product.)

Minecraft only buffers frames once so If a frame is missed you see a vertical tear(happens often). If you set the fps to 120 then It will have the same effect as double buffering and you see smooth 60 fps even if a frame is skipped.
Just set your fps to be high enough so your game can be running normally. What else is there to be discussed? I might not be the pro for this stuff, but im just sayin.

This makes no sense at all... that isn't how double buffering works... if anything that will cause MORE screen tearing because it will update the video information twice per frame displayed on the monitor. Frames also aren't "missed" unless you have Vsync on, which will make the game wait for the next refresh signal before it can send a new frame, hence the drop in FPS from 60 to 30. Either way, without Vsync the graphics buffer sending data to the display will be swapped out whenever the game sends a new frame, not when the monitor is ready for it, causing screen tearing.
Concerning Input lag: when using VSync, Input lag can also be reduced by using Adaptive instead of normal VSync (though I don't know if that's an Nvidia-only-thing), by activating Triple Buffering, or by reducing the amount of pre-rendered frames for your Nvidia graphics adapter (or I think OpenGL frames for ATi/AMD, isn't it?)...
I tried activating triple buffering, lowering the pre-rendered frames (from 3 to 1), and using "adaptive tear control", and absolutely none of these things do absolutely anything compared to without; having vsync on in Minecraft just feels odd for me for some reason when I use it, much as I loved the lack of screen tearing with it on. It's just not as responsive or quick though and feels odd and I can't comfortably adjust to it for some reason (heck if I really know why).

Why do I still play in 1.6.4?

i never really have problems with screen tearing in minecraft. although i do have some problems when i go in full screen.
Welcome to the forum. This topic is rather old. Unless you have something relevant to add to an old discussion please don't post in it.

I tried it with terrible results. I gave my wife my glasses for a second, a creeper showed up and now my wife is pregnant.
Stupid 3D..
