My friends and I have a server realm that we started before the caves and cliffs update. Lots of exploring and big builds already in the works and so when the update was released we were hoping the new content would merge into our world without having to restart. My initial searches it seemed like we did not have to start a new world to get the new content. We've found the new glow squid, goats, salamander etc. so some of the new content seems to be in our pre update world build. Since the update though we have not been able to find the new minerals. The copper is no where to be found in bioms we've already built structures and mines.
Can someone confirm that we do NOT need to start a new world to get copper and all the other content of the update?
Is copper really hard to find? We've been mining around 46-48 for days now with nothing.
It looks as though we will have to wait until the 1.18 update, additionally you will not find copper ore in existing chunks, meaning you'd need to generate newer ones or start a newer world if you wanted copper ore.
However, bare in mind that Drowned Zombies now drop copper ingots since 1.17.
So you can craft copper blocks and lightning rods if you want them and get them.
Ah, I see. I couldn't find that information anywhere. I'll have to look up what the eta for 1.18 is. Otherwise its knocking zombies into lakes for now lol.

I'm fairly new to minecraft so sorry for the question that may seem simple. What does this mean? Are "existing chunks" the chunks of cubes in a grid that were created when the world was generated? How are new chunks generated if you don't start a new world? Thanks for any help!
You don't need to start a new world. You have go to parts of the world you haven't been to in order to generate new chunks. New blocks to not generate in old terrain as not to intrude upon existing terrain. The mobs spawn because they are not dependent on new blocks.
Cool, that makes sense. So any new unexplored areas in our world with generate new chunks with new content.
So that begs the next question. When 1.18 releases in (possibly December), will we be in the same situation where existing chunks will not have new content and we either have to create a new world and lose progress or explore new territory to generate new chunks? OR, will the existing chunks be updated?
If I understand this properly you can keep your old world as updates are released but with the release of new major content updates you will need to explore out into new areas to experience the new content. Otherwise start a new world from scratch and the entire generated world will have the new content. Anything to change or add to that?

Yes, existing chunks will not have the newer underground materials. But you'd still get the newer mobs spawning.
This is the most likely outcome, since historically newer materials did not generate in existing chunks.
Bedrock layer will still exist at Y 0 to 5 in existing chunks, along with whatever else had already generated there.
But if you move to a different area by the time 1.18 update comes out, you'll get your copper ore, deepslate and what not.
However, existing chunks will follow new game tick events and can spawn new mobs.
This has been the case for every update in recent memory except 1.8, where monuments could spawn in oceans you had visited provided you had been in the chunks less than 2 minutes.

Hunt the drowned, they smuggle the copper away You may also consider recruiting regular zombies into their ranks as well, copper ingot seems to be the innate rare drop of Drowned without correlation to the equipment they may or may not carry. A flooded dungeon with zombie spawner may come in handy.
Or perhaps even a regular mob grinder with modifications, consider magma floor for some of the sections to weaken the mobs first since flooding makes fall-damage based weakener rather impractical.
Dwarf gamer found:
Buildings - square, not round
Materials - from rubble mound
Dark caves - lit 'n' cleaned out
Settlements - deep underground
Farmability - to grinder bound
Shields - made creepers but sound
Axes and crossbows - taking mobs out

Ooh, imagine a Drowned farm.
Unfortunately, they spawn at full health and are hard to separate from zombies.
I've had some success lately. Not far from our desert biome we found everything had spawned. Deepslate Cobblestone, Copper, Tuff etc. So that was cool. I also came across a video that showed how you can use a tool to delete specific chunks of area in your world so when you reload your world the content will generate new chunks with the updated content.

Just go out to a chunk that you haven't loaded in yet. I myself just built a fast travel road via nether to a new over-world mine

So some good news there.
