Hello! My sister and I have recently had the urge to play MC again and were wondering if anyone had any suggestions of current popular mods? We haven’t played modded MC since the Yogscast were playing Terraria and so, as you can imagine, we’re quite lost on where to start. Also, is it worth trying classic survival again? We’ve noticed there’s been quite a lot of updates since we last played... Thanks in advance!
Try vanilla survival first, since a lot of things have been added to the base game.
If you want to play modded Minecraft after that, then things are a bit of a mess there. 1.12.2 was the previous big modding version (and I've also heard some people are still playing modded 1.7.10), but after that, there are now two major modding APIs: Forge and Fabric.
Vanilla is the best to start with, try using the recipe book/Gamepedia wiki if need be or the Advancements to guide you. Otherwise there is probably some good Youtube tutorials but if you want to stick to other sources I'd say go with the in-game ones (Recipe Book/Advancements) or go with the Wiki if need be for specific things out of game.
Survival is the best way to experience things, creative is good but even with cheating things in (which I do find helpful for reviews) it isn't always the best way to learn some features, outside of building of course which creative is more suited to.
If you mean when the Yogscast played Terraria and the 9 years ago result is the case or much later then that's a long time ago. I assume beta or 1.0 at that point. Not the Jaffa Factory around 1.2.5 with Tekkit either. Which a lot has changed in terms of mobs, bosses, biomes, a tier above diamond and more. Snapshot videos, Wikis or just approaching everything blind are all worthy options.
For Modded new things have come up. While there was always two modloaders Liteloader (been around since 1.5.2 to 1.12.2 with more minimap/HUD element mods)/Rift in 1.13 & 1.13.2 (is a more expanded for modding potential then Liteloader approach that was brief) were never big enough to get noticed by the mainstream modding audience, but Fabric has (a 1.14+ modloader that works on snapshots and releases, it is more expanded than Rift was). Which I have lots of forum/video/mod experience with if you need any help.
There is also Datapacks which is a mix of Commands and Resource Packs and to me an evolution of One Command Block Creations back in 1.8 but Mojang made it a bigger thing in 1.13. To me Datapacks are basically the Official Modding API and are OK (if the Yogscast video on one needing to exist is memorable, it's hear and it's 'OK', unofficial modding is still better with Forge & Fabric).
My suggestion would be to give survival a try with plain old vanilla. They've updated the game with an incredible amount of new content, so you and your sister will find lots of new things to play with. Enchanting is always a fun thing to do, here are some suggestions for armor enchantments. You can also make it a goal to defeat the End Dragon or the Wither. And not to mention the Caves and Cliffs update is on the horizon which will bring a long overdue update to the cave system.
That being said, the mod community continues to amaze me with the content they create and add to the game. If you decide to run the route of mods, you absolutely want to check out CurseForge. If you are looking for some quick suggestions, here are few:
I first played Minecraft 10 years ago and I've just come back too, after a few years away. I am enjoying the game a lot. I have about 30 mods installed and I consider it just about perfect for my tastes. I find it such a relaxing and absorbing way to get through Lockdown.
One niggle is that I would like to mess around with railways but I can see no practical need for them. It's not as if there are vast quantities of resources underground that would make it worthwhile to go to the effort of building one. It seems more practical to create map Waypoints, mine whatever I can and teleport to the base to dump stuff and teleport back to where I was.

If all you are worried about is the best stuff, then definitely rails are useless. The point of Minecraft isn't about having the best stuff, though, it's about doing what you want and having inspirational/creative fun doing it. You're the one in the chair, not those watching you play...so don't let them dictate what you should or shouldn't do (that said, mind what you ask for as folks generally answer questions based on their own fun-having experiences rather than yours).

Horror Adventure Maps
Horror Resource Packs
PvP Mods
Texture packs are also a fun way to liven up the game by basically giving it a facelift. Here are some general ones and some horror specific ones.

Cue song: "Don't Fear The Creeper...."

I've created a (private) modpack that focuses on exploration.
The biggest mods on that list are Biomes o plenty and Electroblobs Wizardry.
If you want to try biomes o plenty, i suggest deactivating quicksand in the generator settings.
Electroblobs Wizardry starts very easy and doesn't bury you under tons of ressources.
You can craft yourself a handbook about this mod with a book and 1 magical crystal.
You can even find the crystals as flowers, wich is realy great!
Anyway if you go for modded minecraft you probably want these 2 clientside mods:
-JEI (Just enough Items)
Is a mod that lets you google crafting recipes ingame. A must have for playing modded minecraft.
-Hwyla
Adds a little window at the top of your screen when ever you look at a mob or block.
It gives you some details, the most important info imo is that it tells you from what mod the objekt you're looking at comes.
My projects:
-are abandoned for now. I might pick 'em up in the future.
For now i'm working on a private modpack that suit's my own playstyle.
I am gonna stay in modded 1.12.2 untill my potato dies. No mercy! :Q
Playing MC without using waypoints/teleportation and automapping mods makes a big difference in the way the game plays.
