thanks, if it happens again, where would the backup metadata be?
It's in the world folder, called level.dat_old. to restore it, delete level.dat and rename level.dat_old to level.dat.
You already tried to create a new world on top of the old one, so the one in that folder won't work. Replace the level.dat in the world folder with the level.dat in your older backup. It will revert your inventory, but you will get your old spawn and map seed (<-- this is the really important part) back.
Do not change your backup. copy files from it, don't cut them or drag and drop them.
Or you could just upload the backup too. It would really help me fix it if I had the original metadata (especially because my computer is pretty powerful and I'm not noticing much lag... I'll try it on this crappy laptop later. I have a really busy week ahead of me, but if you upload the backup OR the same world with the metadata restored from the backup, I can have it to you by wednesday, max. probably before then.)

have you made any headway on my map?
I've downloaded it and looked at it a bit. First glance in mcedit isn't turning anything up, but that doesn't mean much. I am developing a tool which will find corrupted chunks much more effectively and may even be able to help with automated backups and restores in the event of metadata corruption. Almost all of the save data is gzip compressed (and the files, both the metadata and the chunks themselves, can actually be opened if you rename them to .gz and open them with an archiver of your choice). The tool will use gzip to test each archive, then extract everything and perform sanity checks to make sure some other sort of corruption isn't present. The tool will probably be very powerful and will be able to scan all of your saves all at once without prompting for their locations, fixing most errors it finds and removing corruption in a relatively non-destructive fashion.

if i found the original metadata, how would i utilize it to recover my map? the one from before i restarted
1. COPY (from backup folder) 'level.dat' (it might show up as just 'level')
2. PASTE (into world folder)
3. windows should prompt whether or not you want to overwrite the file. Choose Yes.
4. DELETE (from world folder) level.dat_old
i asked because i used recuva, a windows deleted file recovery program, so try to find the backup, i found it, but its memory space had been almost completely used already so it was useless.
my friend has a backup copy of the map b4 i made changes to it, if i took the metadata from that, could i put it in and have all the recent stuff i built still exist? (greenhouse, combo lock house, and normal house)

No. For this reason, you should not try to create a new world on top of an old one. You should replace the metadata anyway though, provided it is in fact the same map. I am going to look at it tomorrow.

if you mean level.dat_old, yes, its been overwritten with the new one you made on top of it.
I can't fix buildings that went missing. I can only fix corrupted chunks and broken metadata.
Excellent thread! Any tips for locating specific chunks in the world that are referenced within error messages generated in the MCEdit java console due to corrupt chunks?
Example:
ERROR:Error reading compressed data, assuming uncompressed: Not a gzipped file
ERROR:Malformed NBT data in file: C:\Users\manux\AppData\Roaming\.minecraft\save
s\World5\b\1n\c.b.-5.dat (Not an NBT file with a root TAG_Compound (found 31))
Malformed or deleted chunk: (11, -5) , C:\Users\manux\AppData\Roaming\.minecra
ft\saves\World5\b\1n\c.b.-5.dat
ERROR:Error reading compressed data, assuming uncompressed: Not a gzipped file
ERROR:Malformed NBT data in file: C:\Users\manux\AppData\Roaming\.minecraft\save
s\World5\b\8\c.b.8.dat (Not an NBT file with a root TAG_Compound (found 31))
Malformed or deleted chunk: (11, 8) , C:\Users\manux\AppData\Roaming\.minecraf
t\saves\World5\b\8\c.b.8.dat
Thanks in advance for any assistance rendered.
EDIT: Further research appears to have helped on this matter. I'm sure this isn't revolutionary info (especially to OP!), but I hate searching for answers to a problem that I've run into, and then seeing threads where folks post the exact problem I have, then update their post saying, "I fixed it!" without explanation, so here goes.
I got my current location within MCEdit by holding the Alt key and the right mouse button. With that info, I took the chunk coordinates that were referenced in the error message, and multiplied them by 16 to get the coordinates of a block that was part of the chunk in question. With the block coordinates in hand, it was easy to navigate to the problem area to remove the error producing chunk. I hope this helps anybody else out there, I'm recovering from map corruption due to an unexpected outage at my hosting provider.

Errors like that in the MCedit console are one of the ways to identify corrupted chunks. Those chunks will not display properly in mcedit and will cause framerate reduction in game. Unfortunately, other kinds of corrupted chunks do not cause those errors, and though they cause hell in-game, they are indistinguishable in mcedit.
So how exactly do you go about editing the metadata?
I'm asking because I'm using MC region and everytime I unpack/repack the chunks to use Cartograph it adds about 5 megabytes to the world size estimate. Right now it's at around 40 MB for a 3.5 MB world.
Any help would be appreciated.

Invedit has the capability. I'm not sure that it will change the size estimate because it is meant to work specifically on items Furthermore, there isn't anything to worry about. It is only the estimate that is changing, it isn't actually getting bigger. The size estimate is buggy anyway, you don't need to worry about it. If you upload your metadata, I can fix it though

Hey apocalypse_r, please could you help me fix my save? My PC crashed and now this small part of my my map regenerates new terrain over the stuff I built. If I rebuild it, every time the chunk reloads or I restart minecraft it regenerates again.
Like this >
the part circled regenerates birch trees in this old area and grass over my minecart route (which is the problem)
I don't really want to lose everything I've built since that though.
The coordinates of the affected area is around x= -98 y=69 z=-509
thanks.
I shouldn't have to revert anything to fix this. You will still have to rebuild the corner of the railway, but I can stop it from regenerating constantly. I'll take a look at it in a minute.

Sorry I haven't been watching this thread carefully. I've been really busy and haven't been on the forum for a few days.

Yah, I know it doesn't affect the data at all, it's just anoying. What I'm asking is how I could fix that, because I have a feeling that I'm going to be seeing that problem alot.
My problem is that while I was playing minecraft normally my computer crashed and now my saved world doesn't apper on my world list. If you can help me with this problem I would appreciated very much. :biggrin.gif: Here is my saved world:http://www.mediafire.com/?c3jlrus41wtrduy
I had dug and dug and dug for hours and got a lot of good stuff, packed it all away and then the game froze. When I started it again everything in the world was back to normal except all the stuff I had with me was still with me. All my goodies stashed away in my hideout was covered over again as if i had just started the map anew. Any ideas?! I would hate to think I just wasted all that time for nothing...
here's a link to the zip file. I compressed a couple of them cause I was uncertain which one to do. I noticed there was a file with "locked" in there(?)

Were you using the far view distance at the time? Also, in what way did the game crash? Did it completly blackscreen with the game just freezeing, or did it do something else? Any error messages?
I play on a mac so it just froze then I got a message saying "Minecraft crashed unexpectedly". It sends a report to Apple and then I reopen it. The crashes seem to be happening with more frequency but now(not when I made this post) the game is saved right before this crash happens so the game is generally unaffected. And no, I've never used another other angle other than 1st person.

Sorry if I was unclear, I ment the render distance when I said "Far", ei; Far, Normal, Short, Tiny.
Question - I tried to go to "http://mc.42nex.us" to get my world's seed so I could share. This map I'm trying to get the seed of, is a server map (SMP), and I'm getting this error from the site
The level.dat you uploaded appears to be malformed. Please try another.
Should I be worried? Does this mean my world is corrupted somehow? My server's map started out as a beta 1.2 map, and when the new save format was introduced I had to convert it, so I do have a level.dat_old and a regular level.dat.
Hey Apocolypse_R.. Im having the same problem as Decoder. I made a very sweet map and now its corrupt and wont show up on my minecraft game. But i can still find it in .minecraft folder.
If this helps http://www.mediafire.com/?i3ujvdzlb6ompnj
