I've been thinking about this for a few weeks now. I've been playing minecraft since alpha ans still love the game like it was day one.
Since a bit though i have noticed that the youtubers i follow have started to stop playing minecraft or a lot less and then the thaumcraft creator has announced the end of his work on it which made me notice that there isnt as many big mods as there use to be
I play modded since 1.7.10 and tried to play 1.14 but i found it harder to enjoy because i didnt have my mods and had to start a new world from scratch.
All this made me wonder what would bring me to call it quits on minecraft. I still dont have an answer for this but i thought i would ask others. So other then boredom/having other stuff to do would cause you to quit?
Honestly, I can see myself paying the game indefinitely. I've sunk thousands of hours into the game at this point and it's still amazing to me. I can only really see myself leaving if the game changes to a subscription-based model instead of buying it once, which would never happen anyway.
I've also played since 1.7, though I prefer to play on servers than single player.
I find single player worlds get boring no matter what version I'm playing. I think all the updates they're adding to the game are really cool and I can't wait 'til the snapshots are officially released. Right now, I'd rather meet some new people to play MC with, and I think that'll bring the game back for me.
I would call it quits if it got too hard to play. I play in single player peaceful survival mode but I do switch to easy mode when I am in need of mob loot. Every time I do, it is very stressful, even though I stick to the immediate area around my base. I'm constantly looking around scanning the area, but Creepers seem to always spawn right behind me. The first time I took my named wolf out with me in my current game he disappeared and I never got him back. I don't know what killed him. If it gets more difficult, I would have to go back to solving sudokus. :-)
I myself am oversaturated from playing the game. But I stick with the community for 1.13/1.14 modding with Rift, Forge 1.13.2 & Fabric. I played niche mods from 1.8 release to 1.12.2 and had fun but I've experienced enough content mods, tweak mods and so on to have had enough and stick with mods still but not to much playing the game but instead testing mods/datapacks for mod spotlights and helping dev teams out.
From 1.4.5 to 1.7.10 and sometimes going back to 1.2.5 with modpack that provide it. I've played all the mainstream mods and while they are good I have no ideas least/played them too much even to look at the new features for them and not really care anymore, they are great but I have no ideas for them like most players do and usually repeat the same things I can do/play the new featured content in their updates.
If Minecraft were more than it is for pay once play forever I too would give up (I am old-school minded with video games sometimes). The community content keeps me sticking around and the snapshot sometimes but I mostly check it out and forget it's there. Not that it's bad I just forget especially with some features I'm into but never quite know what I'd want to do with them.
I too am not a fan of the mob/enemy AI sometimes so if it gets tougher by fan demand I'll give up. I have to adjust every so often and it bugs me and not just because I used to jump versions of 1.2.5, 1.7.10, 1.10.2 to 1.12.2 for modpack (already created/my own custom singleplayer ones) reasons I prefer to. Release 1.9's especially was the point I wanted to give up at some point, the shield mechanic I am fine with just the mob AI annoys me with Skeletons & Enderman. I do play on Normal for the challenge besides playing Easy and moving to Normal since it suited me but still I'll never play Hard or Hardcore since I just doesn't work for me.
I'd just say mob AI mostly would bother me or a dramatic change again. The 1.14 blocks are a nice 'dramatic' change I find since I never use some recipes or I'd prefer a change like it for the same reason I use many machines in tech mods. It just feels right to do that I think. So that will persuade me more than 1.13 did. 1.13 got me to explore Minecraft again but only for a short time. 1.14 will have me think about the game differently in a way I really like so I might not drop off soon for LPs as much as I have already to do testing instead of proper 'gameplay' reasons to stick around. But it's still in snapshots so who knows what happens really.

I would draw this line when a server is no longer viable to host (lack of players, hosting becomes hard to find due to limited demands and/or etc) OR if the modding world changes so much (like being paid for). And like most if the game is pay per month instead of owning all future versions despite what the ToS states at purchase (they are not promised).
At that point I would explore options to put something else online if commercial hosting is not an option for the game(s) I am looking at.
I used to play the game an awful lot, but over time I drifted away from multiplayer and then eventually survival. These days I only play creative and chip away slowly at my overly ambitious projects mostly as a way to unwind and drift away for a few hours. I've gone long periods without playing the game at all and haven't really been active on the forum for six months or so.
Some day I'll play the game for the last time but I couldn't tell you if it'll be tomorrow or ten years from now, eventually I'll drift away from it completely. I don't think that anything in particular will cause me to stop, more than likely something else will replace it that fills the same niche.
What's got me to the point of quitting is this trading system, man I can't tell you the amount of hours i've put into this game, and in the end the trading with villagers has always been my fall back on. Just fun, it;s the only economy type system in the game. And this 1.14 has just trashed the trading. Villagers are absolute nonsense. I have as many villagers lock out without ever showing past the first set of trades then I should. I mean it's crazy a farmer with 10 trades can have so many instances where I can't unlock him past the first 4 he starts with. Having to spend 20-100 plus emeralds to try and reset a guy who then fully locks out and becomes a walking paper weight is utterly nonsense. And to just limit myself from going on future updates to have a decent trading and economy doesn't sound fun. I don't know if I'll be able to play anymore. Just zapped all the passion and excitement I had for the game playing with the new villager trading.

Nobody is forcing you to update to 1.14 - just as nobody forced me to update past 1.6.4 - which would have likely marked the end of me playing the game 5 years ago, especially after 1.8 was released. Yes, I still play on 1.6.4 and have never updated past it for any reason, with no more than a few hours spent on any later version (mostly to test some mods I made for later versions, and even then I've pretty much lost all interest and motivation to make mods for versions I don't play); I last played on 1.13 at the end of last July just to test a simple mod that reverted cave generation back to that in 1.6.4 and haven't touched any of the 1.14 snapshots.
This is one thing that really sets Minecraft (Java only) apart from most other games - they let you easily play on nearly any previous version (minus a few of the very early versions); the game is also easier to mod and to a much greater extent than many other games due to how easy it is to decompile and deobfuscate Java, despite the lack of any official mod support (even the APIs that exist, like Forge, are quite limited in some areas, like if you want to change vanilla code).
That aside, I don't see anything that would cause me to stop playing anytime soon; I've recently spent far more time than intended playing on a recreation of one of my earliest worlds, which I originally planned to play on while working on the next version of TMCW, but I've been exclusively playing on it instead recently (the update to TMCW has taken far longer than expected due to all the features I thought of adding after I started on it; I actually spent more time working on it than actually playing last year, though I see that as playing the game and TMCW is really more of a fun project than modding in content to keep me interested in the game; much of my playtime is in what could be called vanilla, with only a few minor mods).
I do take long breaks from the game at times, but I'll never give it up. Ever. There's always so much to do and so many things to see that I almost never get bored with it! And when I do, there's always mods and servers. I may not agree with some updates and such, but I'm not a part of the dev team, so what can I do? LOL
I've played since alpha, and took a really long break i'd say starting around release 1.5 (due to server drama). Only recently came back and am not planning on leaving again soon. Taking a break is a good thing; it basically just makes the game fresh. Honestly glad some areas of the game have gotten much needed reworks ie: oceans and villages. Sooo Mojang about that Nether update ehh?
Honestly, as many breaks as I've taken from the game, I will probably never call it quits. This is probably the game I've sunk more time inot than any other game. I don't see myself giving up on it.

I would call it quits if you just don’t really enjoy it anymore or if it’s interfering with your life or you just need to move on.

Quite some interesting point of views. Seems like a lit would need to be removed for people to stop playing or if the game would cost more.

TheMasterCaver's First World - possibly the most caved-out world in Minecraft history - includes world download.
TheMasterCaver's World - my own version of Minecraft largely based on my views of how the game should have evolved since 1.6.4.
Why do I still play in 1.6.4?
I would stop playing when people stop creating new mods and modpacks. If it wasn't for the folks on the FTB team, I probably would have already quit.
