Just below I have another thread about attempting to adapt a controller to work in minecraft pc.
Bloody hell, am I frustrated and p.o.'d. Tried Steam, Tried Input mapper. Tried controller companion. Tried a xbox one controller. Tried a PS4 controller. All the same result. Works right up to when minecraft boots, then, nothing but mouse.
I'm too old for this crap. Old dog, and now I gotta learn new tricks (i.e. keyboard/mouse minecraft). Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr.
Why is this so hard? Why can't software developers just provide the interface? I mean, really, is it that far out of the realm of possibility that someone might WANT or NEED to play with a controller? Last option is to find if a local shop will install for a price. Nice. More $'s.
Yeah...grumpy old man wants to punch walls. The Youtube vids look oh so easy. Printed instructions about the same....except when I don't have a clue as to what they're talking about. I watched one where the demo STARTED in the Steam library, assuming that I knew how to even get there. Dude, really? I ain't dead yet but jeez, why am I kicked to the curb?
Xbox controller's getting returned, useless to me. PS4 controller stays with the playstation. The 26 bucks I paid for Java sure ain't gonna get much use for a while. Right now, I've lost a lot of respect for Mojang. No mods for console, but the nice textures, and mods of Java? Sorry grandpa, you gotta learn a whole new system. Pay attention, kids, that is NOT how you build customer satisfaction and loyalty.
Nice crappy start to Superbowl Sunday....
Rant over.

Talking so much about your age in such a negative fashion gives older folks a bad reputation. And it hurts your argument. Why should any company care about customer loyalty of someone who describes themselves as "not dead yet"?
You are entitled to your opinion like anyone else. There are probably a lot of young people, kids even, who would like to use their familiar gaming controllers instead of mouse and keyboard. I think if you leave your age out of it, your complaint would have more weight.
I don't use a controller, so unfortunately I can't offer any help.
I would be handicapped if forced to utilize some outside controller.
The keyboard is definitely more user-friendly. It is also 100% configurable, try that with your controller!
Research the macro/keybind mod (not yet 1.13 compatible). I have some magic assigned to almost every key on my keyboard, some keys have up to 3 different functions depending on the CTRL or SHIFT key positions.
I suggest you quit ranting and become familiar with your keyboard. Ranting here will work no better than it does for my current President!!!
I already own PS3 and PS4. I got Java because I want the texture packs and mods. A co-worker is extremely deep into Java and I wanted to go on his server. I wanted the controller because I already know it and like them.
However, I'm done with trying to adapt. When I return the xbox one, I'm only out $3 (for controller companion) 1 day of my time, and good quantity of bad attitude. It's gonna be the keyboard. That adapting stuff is far above my abilities now. It's not good when you open tabs in an app and it's like reading Greek. I kept up with tech for 29 years, and all it did was shift into overdrive and leave me in the dust. I learned on DOS and Windows 3.1. I just don't have the energy for this level of concentration anymore.

My first computer was a 286 8 or 12 (turbo) with 1 meg of RAM and a 20 meg hard drive. I was a MSgt stationed in Germany. I still have it and it's never had windows installed. DOS was my friend. I do not code... I got fairly good at writing macros for Excell. Give the keyboard a chance and I think you'll grow to like it. Get hung up or just want to chat, fire me a PM. I cannot promise I can help but I'll try. If I don't know the answer I'll tell you that too.
Trust me, the keyboard is far easier to adapt to your play.
I guess the one way I mod(ify) my Keyboard is to use Command-Clicking for a replacement-of Right-Clicking (which I rarely have a Mouse with enough Buttons - working - for, well-enough in whatever-hand, anyway). Though I did have that one Cordless Mouse with however an incessant need for Batteries, with at least 2 Buttons.
There are also ways-now increasingly required to Shift-Command-Click stuff, to use /Place it correctly. But I applaud your efforts to Try To Get Stuff To Work /"Work" when Interfaces are Not-that great, ultimately - Unless, again, there are Multiple (and /or "backward-compatible") options present - and I'm just lucky it works for me, as I-too would never be able to handle a Touchscreen (they just Added SHIELDS after Four [More, Anyone..?] Years for "Bedrock Edition's," various-"Devices," and - Like Crossbows also-Upcoming, but still - it makes people Move Slowly, to use Either of them, in that - given, set of - "Edition[s]").
But they don't even want "sideways-compatibility," I'll call it. For Same-Games, Played at same-Times, in (and yes, it is) History, to have more-than practically-1 "(set of) controller(s)," and it's always been a stretch for me to have to use Keyboard-And-Mouse, but somehow I manage (and "use my 'third hand'" to hit 1-9, for the Hotbar Keys).
Do a search for a wired JWFY gaming mouse ($5±). 7 buttons and no problems.

One more thing that may help if your eyesight is fading, I have an AZIO, large character, backlit keyboard that I find irreplaceable. The most common complaint deals with the superscripted characters (they are subscripted). It's a very minor problem unless someone besides you sits at your computer.

I'm sorry for your woes man. If you absolutely, positively, don't want to play with a keyboard mouse there is one thing I can assure you works: https://javadocs.wordpress.com/2013/03/21/minecontrol-2-0-released/ This is an old (2013) java web-start applet that lets you map an xbox 360 controller for minecraft. I have personally used this and have had it on my computers since 2013 but I don't recommend it to people for because its security certificate expired a long time ago which means you have to add a security exception to I think both java and your firewall. This was an annoying process because, if I remember correctly, it took some digging until I found out exactly what needed exceptions where and while I have experienced no ill-effect from doing this I hesitate to tell anyone to do something that sounds so sketchy.
I played with the controller until my XP computer couldn't handle the java of both minecraft and minecontrol running simultaneously. I have since learned the keyboard/mouse play method and can't go back to a controller but I still have minecontrol on my win7 computer and my girlfriend occasionally uses it to play 1.13.2 with me so I know it still works. Seems like I may be a little too late for this to benefit you but it is an option if you want to try while waiting for your mouse to be delivered.
I found that mouse and ordered it. So, tell me about it? It's about binding the commands I want most to the 7 buttons on the mouse?
The Macro/Keybind mod allows you to customize your mouse as well as your keyboard. You will also need LiteLoader (LL) and both are currently at 1.12.2.
My Macro/Keybind is 1.12.1 (0.15.4) but works with 1.12.2. There is a 1.12.2 LL.
I use 5 of the 7 buttons often. When not playing MC the mouse performs normally. Mr. Mumfrey (author) may be able to explain how to utilize all mouse buttons, it wasn't a priority for me.
I use a few Forge mods as well... LL can extend Forge mods, this allows both to work with one another.
Try out Pinnacle Game Profiler. It's not a free program but it is very in depth. I use an old USB Xbox 360 controller for some games and it allowed me to set different controls to different levels of joystick and trigger movement, as well as being able to setup separate profiles. That last one would be useful if you ever play in creative. There are free versions, just search for controller emulators and try some out.
Side note, I agree that controller recognition should be a thing for most if not all games. Windows can figure out what buttons something has when plugged in. Why can't it just be programmed in to use that?

DING! DING! DING! Give that man (or woman) a nice Cuban cigar!!!
Why isn't the programming done? Laziness. I also find it interesting that the game looks totally like a DOS interface...
BTW, I work on Battleship Iowa in San Pedro. Thanks for all the tax $'s. Please send more...

with a ps4 controller you can use DS4 windows, not the most friendly setup but once you get the hang of it you can make profiles and map to your hearts content. ds4windows.com (note when the driver gets installed it tries to reroute your audio to the controller ports which dont work yet, just reset your defaults in the sound menu, also: it doesnt explicitly list it on the website but you can map the controllers buttons directly to keys)

Well, I do enjoy a good rant, hearing and giving lol.
Minecraft was born on the PC and bloomed because of it's flexability and modability supported, or at least not hampered by, Notch. So, the full Minecraft experience with proper modding and java pluggin's is only really available on PC or Mac not for the feint hearted; Utilities like Forge can make this experience a little nicer, but given those utilities are generally maintained by an informal group of open source coders one should not expect it to be pain free (and also, in any way they might hurt MS earnings their not going to be supported, and its pretty easy for MS to make game changes which will make it near impossible for third parties to adapt).
Saying all that, I do agree your core point, Joysticks have been around forever and theres never been a good coordinated effort to just make them work (mainly because its a profit model of many modern businesses to make sure they only work well with their equipment, games etc).
Why I was real sad when Notch sold out to corporate culture, Notch was really "one of us" and some members of the community rather let him down, though he let us all down.
Still at least the remaining community is rallying :).
I'd highly recommend, unless your suffering some disability making Joystick your only option, you learn the Keyboard Mouse architecture which Mojang has perfected well. Good luck.
I'm trying (sort of) to become a touch typist. I deviate from MCs recommended ASDW. I use A for left, S for Sneak, D for /Descend (MoreCommands & WorldEdit), F for Forward, and G for right.B is Backwards C is Chat, T is open/close inventory. Spacebar is Jump,
I have the majority of macros assigned to left-hand keys.
My Lmouse is Attack or CTRL left for //POS1 (WorldEdit), Rmouse is Place or CTRL right for //POS2, The center (Scroll when pressed( is /pick, /refill (It copies the block where the crosshairs are), mouse 3 is /fly & /noclip on, mouse 4 turns off both fly & noclip, it turns on /instantmine.
You can configure your mouse and keyboard any way you like. I put a fair amount of thought into my current setup, GL to you.
