I tried everything. I am advertising my server on 3 websites, i've told many people through discord. Not even one person has joined. It's been 2 weeks since i started it... I'm not going to say the ip so dont ask for it
this is one issue with minecraft, everyone and their mother and dog is making a server thinking they can be the next mindcrack or hermitcraft or 'insert big server name here'
you made a server and added it to the 100's of 1000's of servers already out there, make a server for yourself and your friends to enjoy, and enjoy it, don't make a server for the masses, its a waste of your own time
Just like web said there are 1,000's of empty servers out there and yours is going to be no different. Because 99.99% of the Minecraft players out there are playing with friends or already have their own favorite server.

Going to preface this by saying I came onto the forum tonight to make a thread about my own server launching tomorrow morning, so I'm biased.
This is a defeatist attitude and it really doesn't make that much sense. Yes, there are lots of servers, and lots of people have favourite servers. That doesn't mean a new server won't be popular in the future. It's like saying there's no point in making a new movie, a new game, etc, unless you're already a famous creator. That's not how markets work. New faces always crop up. Is it hard? Yeah, it's damn hard. And I bet I'm very quickly going to learn myself it's even harder than I think. But that doesn't mean it's impossible or that hard work doesn't affect your rate of success.
The whole "everyone is making a server thinking they can be the next X" thing is just kind of demeaning, to be honest. Lots of people put a lot of work into their servers, creating something they love and hoping to share that with others. The whole joy of creating a server is the sharing. It's being able to cultivate a community and create meaningful relationships. It's not just for money or internet fame. Nobody in this thread said they were out to be the next hermitcraft. You make it sound like we just woke up in the morning and decided we were going to make famous Minecraft servers, like entitled kids.
Probably not my wisest 5am post but there it is. I can agree with a percentage of what you're saying. It's hard. There are lots of servers out there doing what OP is doing. But I don't think you understand his intention. There are reasons to try to grow a public server other than being the next Mindcrack.

Hey, i would love to check this server out put to quote webrosc
Don't waste your time with making a huge server.
I'm not wasting my time making a big server. It's intended to be a small towny server for a few people to just chill and chat. Nothing more.. I dont really have friends so i cant play with anyone.
I can’t speak for everyone else when I say this, but I think most will agree. There are so many servers now. Survival, factions, towny, literally thousands. All run off the same plugins and such. When a random person is given the choice between either:
1. A giant, well-established server with a large community.
2. A new server with not many members and the possibility of it going down due to inactivity or just poor finances.
Not saying that will happen, but it’s what prospective new players are considering.
So how does one make a successful server?
To me, it’s about giving a reason for people to play your server instead of the countless others. I will use a real example: my mini-game servers. I play on Hipixel: it is the largest and most advanced server out there. I really enjoy build battle and egg-wars.
Why would I ever play on another server for the same plugin, if the player base and overall atmosphere (something you cannot control without a large player base for funding) is worse? Why bother with the countless small towny servers when I can play on the biggest, best one out there?
The answer is to do something unique. I played on a smaller mini game server (forgot name) for a long time, because it had this mini game called Maze Runner. It was really fun. Did I play the Hunger Games in that server? Nope, I play that on hipixel. But I joined the smaller sever because the big server didn’t have what they did.
Claiming you want to make a “small towny server for a few people to just chill and chat” is exactly the problem: there are countless of those for you to join. If you want to make friends on multiplayer, join on of those.
If you want to create a successful server, bring something new to the table that only you have. I’m not too familiar with Towny, but what if you set it to a specific time period? Maybe it could be after a nuclear war, or during the Wild West. Just give it something that makes people have a reason to return. Once you establish a player base it will get a lot easer: you then have not only the server but the social aspect to lure people back.
I consider the true example of this to be Wynncraft. They had a crazy server idea, and yes they started small before becoming huge. But if a very similar server to wynncraft was released now, it would stay small forever.
Public servers are terrible anyways. There's hardly anywhere untouched to build or mine. You are handicapped unless you give them money for permissions, items, etc. There's a constant spam of chat to where you can't even /help long enough to read what the server has to offer.
Host a private server for you and your friends. I even host my singleplayer worlds on a server because I have more control.
I have to wonder why you decided to create your own server though, especially if you have no friend as you say. It seems a lot easier and less hassle to just join one of the existent one that share your interests and have a community that is active in your play hours
For anyone who doesn't understand, here are some reasons to start a public Minecraft server:
Development is fun
Rewarding to grow a community and see hard work pay off
Other servers may not meet your specific wants and needs, too jaded with other owners, etc.
Can gain experience in managing people and software.
You can make lots of friends (also see point 2)
This isn't supposed to be a 'gotcha' to anyone, I largely agree that too many people make no effort servers. But not all new servers have to be low effort.

To the person who said to advertise my IP. Please read the last sentence of the post.
To the person who said why i created a server even tho i have no friends, It's because every time i join a server, any type, towny, factions or whatever else I dont get any friends. I just wanted to make a server to get people who will be nice to me for once.
I would also appreciate people telling me how i could improve a towny server because all I'm seeing right now is tips to just quit on life in general.
Nobody is telling you to quit on life. I personally was just trying to understand your motivations for creating a server. To me, it seems like your motivation was about getting new/better friends.
It just seems to me it would be easier to go somewhere and promote yourself as a friendly person worth being friends with then creating and promoting a server and expect people to be your friends right from the start. I know personally, if i created a server, i would always wonder if people are nice to me for who i am or for admin rights.
As for promotional ideas. what i like personally when i am looking at advertisement for servers, is pictures. So i can see what the building style looks like and also a list of what the servers offers. like the mods, events.. etc
I didn't see your advertisement but maybe these tips will help. Best of luck.
Curious why you wont post the ip if you want people to join? I'm a friendly person who would come check it out. I don't have many people to play with either. I have a personal server for myself and my friends that will play like a few hours every other month lol. Since i play typically every other day it would be nice to meet some new people as well

He/She complains about no one joining their server, yet they refuse to post the ip to the server?

this is honestly normal
just keep advertizing and improving your server and staff and eventually people will join
thanks but i dont think it'll work. i actually tried making the server on 1.12.2 a few months ago and the only people who joined were 2 trolls...

Probably to keep out the "Nobody's here, so I'm gona' wreck it' crowd.
