So, here's the details. I'm looking to start my own server for a few friends, up to maybe 5, but closer to 3. We do want to have some plugins, and have a lot of ideas, and who knows, in time we may decide to grow. The plan is to whitelist, and I have a host in mind. However I have tons of questions, being that I've never been a mod or op or had my own server before.
First, how many gig do I REALLY need to have a good bunch of plugins for up to maybe 5 people?
Some plugins we really want are skyblock, some sort of land claim we like the golden shovel, but most likely the frineds would be mods.. i think that'd enable them to claim where they like? We like the idea of having shops or challenges and being able to sell what we gather, even though it's just friends right now. I don't know what that even entails though. We want to have minigames, probably role play, survival, and to be honest I'm not even sure of all the types of minecraft play out there so i'd love input on some types that maybe we're not knowledgeable about. We know that we don't want PVP or towny or prison, we're undecided on parkour.. theres some stuff we just don;t have a lot of info / experience with.
Also, what plugins seem to be the most popular for this type of server with these kinds of plugins I mentioned. I'd also like to know about skyblock itself, it seems like there are different versions, some with tiny islands and nothing fancy, and others where the islands are bigger more customized and have some pretty cool starting options, and even the challenges seem different. How do we know what kind of skyblock we want?
We would also LOVE to create our server to have a Supernatural TV show theme, and I don;t know if there are options for having the mobs be like supernatural monsters, I think that'd involve mods, if those sorts of things are available.
Also how does skyblock work with survival? Do I have to rent two servers? I'm very new to this and while I have tried to ask questions at places we play, we get almost zero help. We're not trying to compete with any servers, really this is just for us, we still plan to also play on our favorite servers, but want to make our own place too. Also, I've noticed skyblock doesn't seem compatible with the newest version, am I mistaken or is this the case?
Do we just pick a seed? are there special seeds for skyblock? how does one set up a spawn point usually? what's important?
I know this is a lot of info, but if anyone could even just direct us to pages that answer this sort of stuff that'd be great. I'll start here with these questions and go on after we get a little base start going.
I would only use ~1 GB for the server for 5 players. I have a 1GB public server that's been able to run fine even when 18 players were on.
Skyblock is different today than it used to be; originally it was just an empty void world with a small island and a chest. Today a lot of servers have it automated with commands, inventory GUIs, and economy systems (many "skyblock" servers today just focus on AFKing by spawners and automating systems to make even more money in the shop). The most common plugin for skyblock isn't updated for 1.13, but you could make your own skyblock by building a few islands.
In most cases, you don't need a separate server for different gamemodes- you just need separate worlds or areas, and then limit certain commands and permissions to those areas. Try looking into Multiverse-Core and Multiverse-Inventories.
