The Combat Update was a very controversial addition to Minecraft. Many players were angry about the change to a system they had learned and excelled at for years. Others praised the update, enjoying the more tactical approach to fighting. Even today people argue over the combat update, not only on these forums but throughout the community. Most major minigame servers continue to support 1.8 players, at the cost of the new content. With Update Aquatic arriving the division between playerbases will only grow. Will people begin to jump ship on 1.8 for fish, or will they remain against the combat overhaul? How far are people willing to go, more importantly how many people?
"How many" is an interesting topic with these online clashes. 1.8ers are adamant that the most people in the community hate the combat update, while the 1.9ers think opposite. This has been bothering me for quite some time. I don't think anyone really knows the percentage on each side, and it's about time we change that.
I've created a poll to measure the opinions on the combat update. That way we can finish this debate once and for all, the winning side can simply show a picture of the poll and end of discussion. It would save a lot of time. To submit a response, just the click the link below:
If you are reading this, please submit an entry on the poll. It's very easy, just click the blue link and fill one of the boxes. We need as many people are possible for the most accurate data. I made it a strawpoll so even the lurkers can voice their opinion. The amount of responses should be equal to this page's view count.
Mods, perhaps this could get pinned so everyone can see it? We need the most accurate data, and the more people who notice the poll the better. And I don't know if this should be in discussion or recent updates, as it is about an update but it's not recent.
I voted, but it's flawed reasoning to think this will be representative enough to settle a seeming never-ending argument about which opinion has more supporters. The old adage of people being quiet until they are unhappy can apply here, and far from all players even visit here to begin with. Unless Mojang makes a forced and fast "do you like the combat before or after 1.9 better" survey which requires all players to answer, you will never know.
Again - I voted but I don't think a simple "One or the other" option covers all when there are many factors. Some will be voting purley on just them PVPing on severs/sever mini games, some just survival. Perhaps a little both, but this is why a simple one or the other answer won't fit all IMO.

The poll really could have a "it doesn't really matter to me" option.
For example, what I want to do with the game is be able to build, so it really doesn't matter a big deal to me how the combat works, so long as I can figure out (or access a wiki page on) how it does work so I know what to do if I happen to be in Survival gamemode.
Though...maybe the poll should be clarified as "...of those players who have a preference X percent favor ____," so that it's clear there exist other players not represented by the poll, and its intent was/is only to measure percent within the group that has a preference.
1. This forum doesn't represent all of the Minecraft community. Some people probably spend more time talking with other Minecraft fans on Reddit, Youtube or Planet Minecraft, or sites in different languages. Others may be avoiding the Minecraft community entirely. Yet more just enjoy talking about the game with only their friends and nobody on the internet.
Here on this forum, with the assistance of the Suggestions forum, we like to debate the reasons for good gameplay design and we tend to value quality gameplay over nostalgia. However, on other forums there may be a much higher or lower percentage of people who value good gameplay design over familiar, nostalgic combat.
2. This poll doesn't include options for if you don't care either way, if you think both systems have value, or if you think neither of them are good. Personally, I think the 1.9 combat system is an improvement, but not a perfect system. With the addition of Sweeping Edge, I would have gotten rid of the need to place a crosshair on mobs to attack them. Rather, any mob within a certain distance and angle relative to the player's yaw would be damaged by your swing.
Yet another person may not be interested in the combat situation at all, prefering either a pacifist style of gameplay or prefering to play in Creative Mode rather than Survival Mode. Or perhaps they just adjusted quickly to the new combat system while being mostly unaware of the debate.
3. In the end, while I don't think this is the point of the poll, this doesn't prove whether or not a certain gameplay style is the one that belongs in Minecraft. Lots of people seem to want Emerald or Obsidian Tools in the game, but Mojang knows that we really don't need another tier of tools. Many people want to see Foxes in the game that are an exact clone of Wolves. Mojang knows this would be pointless, since it's a duplicate feature.
There's no pure logic in game design. It is going to be based off opinion in the end, because that's generally how emotions work. But the question is whether or not a certain move will create more overall enjoyment in the long run, or if we should avoid progress because of the possibility that it will damage the game. This is where the debate starts with 1.8 PVPers and 1.9 PVPers.
Anyway, I've voted 1.9 because... It does make combat difficult again. The ironic thing is, some first-poster will make a suggestion about how Hardcore mode isn't difficult enough about them, while yet more say that 1.9 makes PVP "too difficult." Maybe the argument should be about whether or not Minecraft needs to be more difficult?

My avatar is a texture from a small block game I made in Python. It's not very good and it probably won't work if you install it.
I'm very alone in my Minecraft worlds as I don't have a very good internet connection to run a server. If you're like me, you might be interested in my Posse mod suggestion.
The purpose behind a straw poll was so everyone can vote. If they don't wish to post their opinions online this doesn't require any words just pressing a button. If you don't use this forum, I can post it on Reddit. If you don't care either way, I'm sure you have at least some preference. This doesn't mean you're an avid supporter, but if you were asked if Mojang should remove 1.9 combat would you say yes or no? Maybe doesn't really apply to this situation and would only complicate thing.
The Best solution is to just add a gamerule to turn it on and off.
An easier solution would be to split combat and single player again,,, but that's not going to happen any more than the promised API when they were combined!!!

I didn't vote because, while I personally like the 1.9 combat better, I feel that it was a terrible decision for the community as a whole. A change that causes this much of a schism is probably a bad one.

to be fair this isn't the first one of these changes, just the most recent, and the water rework is looking like it will be another one (people really need to stop complaining about water BTW)
I'll put it like this: 1.9 combat adds strategy to PvP other than spam-clicking. However, it can be a nuisance in SSP, especially against skeletons that rapid-fire when you're close and knock you back the instant you're ready to strike again.

then don't use swords against skellies
i feel like this was intentional to keep the sword from being the be all end all, rare is it that i actually see someone use a bow, rarer still that anyone attempts a tipped arrow or a splash pot
"Why don't devs just add a gamerule to turn off cooldown?"
Because its to be huge buffs on axes and it would make swords useless in combat, I mean come on axes already deals more than swords and can disable shields.
I always found it a ridiculous thing to complain about, because, in reality, it's not that hard to get used to. It just seems like people like older stuff better than newer stuff, and that goes for everything even outside of gaming. Like, they grew up using older technology, so they automatically dislike the new stuff. Honestly, I love the 1.9 combat update, I have actually gotten better at PvP since then (I'm still not great at it though lol). I just wish people at least TRIED the 1.9 update, cause I know plenty of people who haven't. They just automatically hate it because it's different.
I also don't understand the complaints when there are mods and plugins to make the game exactly the way they want for combat *ANYWAY*, so why not just use those?

Because it’s not the same. The only thing those plugins do are disable the cool down.

I did not vote cause I dont do servers and could not care less about PvP. But far as single player survival, I find that I like 1.9 combat more.
