I'm just getting into minecraft and I could use a little help being pointed in the right direction. I'm trying to determine what is currently the best 3rd party launcher. There are some older threads on this subject, but as far as I can tell they're at least 2 years out of date.
I've seen a good number of people chime in in other threads that you should just stick with the official launcher from Minecraft.net. Personally, I think this is a bit shortsighted. While the official launcher still offers you plenty of options, I think 3rd party launchers will provide the most open experience that the pc gaming platform is all about. (Side note though: I intend to keep the official launcher as an option anyway.)
I use MultiMC launcher instead of the Official Launcher as I find it more easier/convenient when adding Mods to try out (something I do regularly), & it has the abillity of being able to turn each MOD on/off (enable/disable) - useful when trying to find out which MOD is a problem when the game crashes on launchin etc
It also makes it easy to install & update Forge & Liteloader
It also allows 'instances' of same versions of Minecraft to exist so you could set up a 'Vanilla' 1.12.2, a 'Redstone test build' 1.12.2 & a 'Let's Play' (modded) 1.12.2 version...as well as stores these in whatever directory you like (useful if you have a small C: SSD but large D: drive)
... Each instance can have it's own Maps/Resources etc (for example you may want a 'clean' resource pack when building/testing redstone, but a HD resource pack when playing Modded) - each totally seperate from each other so no possibility of conflicts between them
Another (recent) reason I use MultiMC, is that there seems to be a bug with the latest Snapshots in the Offical Launcher (or it could just be me).
IF you set the 'Resolution' switch to ON in the offical Launcher - the [1.13] Snapshots crash when trying to lauch them (Switching OFF resolution & snapshot works - but only in full screen)

Aside from the "new" launcher, there's also the "old" launcher available here
https://minecraft.net/en-us/download/alternative
It's the second option in the list. It sometimes works better and has a few different options, especially for error reporting, than the new launcher.
Then, for modded, most all the mod packs are on the Twitch launcher, which usually automates mod pack installs and make things easier.

To tell them how to live is to prevent them living.

- however in MultiMC, this problem doesn't exist
