I started playing Minecraft way back in 2013 and it was by far my favorite game at the time, but these days I typically play games like counter strike and call of duty more than Minecraft. I remember when Minecraft was the biggest thing on the internet, everybody and their brother was playing it. All my friends were playing it and we had some great times in Minecraft. We would play hunger games on Mineplex and do LAN worlds together, it was the best. I recently tried to get back into it and it seems like the community is pretty much dead, almost nobody plays anymore, and the youtubers who are still making Minecraft videos today just make me bored and the new videos they make are just pure cancer in my opinion. I remember watching Ssundee play super craft bros on the Minecade server, and I went on that server recently to see how its doing, but much to my dismay, that server is completely dead. I hate to admit it but I really miss the old Minecraft days and I hope that maybe someday it will make a comeback.
The community really did help make part of the great experience back then. It annoys me how Youtube decided to switch from being a place where you could post your creations and cool stuff, to the dirt hole it is now.
As much as I'd like it to, I don't see MC's community making a comeback. Comeback's like that are pretty much unheard of.
Yeah I kinda feel like it won't make a comeback either, but it would be awesome if it did. At least we'll always have mods and crap that we can play around with on our own
Minecraft continues to sell at a mind-boggling pace: Developer Mojang has now sold 122 million copies of the sandbox exploration game across all platforms, the Microsoft-owned Swedish studio announced today.
Microsoft’s previous milestone was 100 million copies, which Minecraft reached in early June 2016. That means that a whopping 22 million people bought a copy of the game in the last nine months. Asked by Polygon, a Microsoft representative clarified that although the company has been allowing owners of the original Java-based PC/Mac version of Minecraft to get a free copy of Minecraft: Windows 10 Edition, Microsoft does not include those redemptions in its sales calculation.
“The 122M units is paid units to players only,” the spokesperson told Polygon.
Mojang also announced today that Minecraft currently has 55 million monthly active players, an increase of 37.5 percent from the 40 million that Microsoft reported back in June. It’s possible that the recent release of version 1.0 of Minecraft’s Windows 10 Edition and Pocket Edition — the former is essentially a port of the latter — helped raise the number of monthly active users. Mojang released the Ender Update for those versions in mid-December, officially bringing them out of beta.
Consider the implications of that - out of 122 million copies sold there are still 55 million players playing the game on at least a monthly basis - that's 45% of all copies ever sold over more than 8 years! Yes, this was from early this year but I see absolutely no reason why everybody would suddenly stop playing the game; indeed, even the original Java version, which is referred to in particular in these kind of threads, continues to accumulate sales, recently hitting 27 million.
I still play as much as I did when I first got the game; in my first world I've averaged 3.5 hours per play session (or day, with nearly always one session per day), a value which has not changed that much, or even increased slightly, over more than two years worth of daily play sessions spread out over more than 4 1/2 years, with more than a third of a year of playtime in total in this one world (as high as that sounds I know of at least one other member who has a longer-running world in terms of in-game days passed; note that I do not AFK however), and I averaged 3.85 hours in another world I played earlier this year (22.46 days of playtime over 140 sessions). I've also averaged 3.62 hours per session since I started playing on my first world again in June, and 3.85 hours since late August (when I estimated that I'd spent over 5,000 hours playing the game so far; I've spent about 175 days in the four worlds which I have statistics for, with half a dozen other worlds).
What makes this even more remarkable is that I still play a 4+ year old version of the game (most of that time with mods but even my more complex mods impact my gameplay less than updating to 1.12 would) and with a playstyle which has not changed much over the years.
Of course, part of that increase may be due to the fact that the forums are dying so I spend less time on them; by this measure the game has been "dying" since it peaked in 2012 - while around 80-85% of all copies ever sold have been sold since then. It is worth noting that citricsquid says that these forums are unique among all games (I do not have any experience with any other gaming forums) and forums in general seem to be dying out:
This incredible popularity of this forum was an outlier in the world of online single game communities, this forum's popularity was something that had never been seen before and will probably never be seen again. You can't compare the popularity of the forum now (relative to the popularity of Minecraft) with the popularity of the forum at peak.
I started Minecraft in 1.4.5 so I just went with tech and RPG mods randomly, built terrible structures and just explored in mines on end in survival or creative and nowadays just do anything survival or mudpack related and dropped adventure maps after so much I have done with them since satisfied enough to stop playing them. I go on and off from it for console games of a different kind but find the game to just be either getting features I want (1.12 features mostly) and other times just bored and just looking for more to do with Minecraft and that the 'hey what is this person doing' experience for creations and survival to just not being worth a watch anymore. I play survival on any version, currently on a 1.12 and 1.2.5 singleplayer game just for mixing up ideas and challenging myself again, highlighting niche mods for new versions no one knows about with interesting tech ideas mostly but some simple quality of life mods, or alternatives to other big mods (not mod addons but just similarities) (niche mods has made me grow about bit of my mini youtube community, but for helping the creators get noticed as the #1 priority, not for the money, couldn't care less for it). I do get bored on occasion and go for other things but from going from Tekkit Classic/Lite to Divine RPG, Mainstream tech mods to addons of those mainstream, to niche ones of any kind to help those that have creativity not being shown I jump around. But around 1.7.10-1.8.9 I was on and off. But from 1.10.2+ I have lost interest or just dropped things like adventure maps, creative ideas for modpacks/quest based maps of my own that I never end up releasing, and just doing either anything to pass the time or just moving on. I don't find games of other kinds to make me want to spend as much time with them due to my differences of interests compared to most gamers but I still look for creativity or just difference experiences among the community if I can. Just my little rambling. I never played on servers as often as most due to not being really my thing, but from the other alternatives I did find I find the game has been the most time I have spent in any game (even if I have replayed older games 10 times or more), the 1.4.5 to 1.12 has been pretty good for me so far. You others might have had better experiences, but this is mine anyways. Creativity searching/creating, adventuring and modding.

The biggest problem, in my opinion, is money. The game became popular and after that pretty much everyone who ran a server had 2 main goals:
Monetizing.
Player comfort.
Couldn't have put it in better words myself.
Tbh, no offence to any server owner out there, but I hate servers these days. I know "hate" is a very strong word, but whatever happened to the old home run servers, where players could show off their greatest creations. I remember playing, wow, 6 years ago beta 1.7? I think, anyway, I remember spending hours exploring through other player's amazing worlds. Being only 11 years old back then, I never knew how to make a server, but all I wanted was to show off my massive temple I made. Those were the good old days that's for sure.
My main point here is that how peoples goals in making a server have changed. Instead of how I wanted to show off what I had made when I was little, kids now just want to make money, and get people to join their faction. Legit that's all this community is now... Bedwars and Factions. The two words I never want to hear again.
Anyway, that's my rant over for now, I guess my main point is that the game best suits little kids, who like to touch and experiment with colorful blocks these days. I think I'm just going to use singleplayer for now and never touch that multiplayer button again, for a while at least.
2. Reaches internet fame. Pop culture trends may follow.
3. Game is still popular, but the internet now is looking at the next big fad
4. People start whining on how the game is now dead, wishing for the "good ol days"
It happened with League of Legends, it happened with Minecraft, it'll probably happen with Overwatch, as it's the big thing right now. These games are still successful and popular as ever. The internet just moved on to the next big thing.

I was a late comer to the Minecraft community as it were. I punched m first blocks, built my first blocky house, planted my first garden, killed my first zombie in 1.8. So yeah I've never actually been with Minecraft from the beginning, but I've experienced the same feelings of those who have. Minecraft was "old" news by the time I bit the bullet and decided to give it a try. And, I fell in love!
I can't get enough! Whether people deem Minecraft as dead, doesn't matter. I love this game and always will!
True there isn't as much hype about it. Just shows how needy the world is. Always wanting something new to pique there interests, always wanting "the latest games/technology", always wanting to be in on the latest fads.
In my opinion, the true Minecraft community would be those who continue to play the game despite all the ups and downs. So what if the community is smaller. There will always be someone (such as myself) who will never let Minecraft go.
I started playing the game long after it was "cool". As far as I'm concnered...
It's an awesome game, and in my life it will never die! <3
If you don't want to play anymore because it's not the same. Fine by me. Go, have fun doing what you truly enjoy.

I've always been a solo player, all the servers I've played were pretty lame with the exception of one that got greifed to so badly it never reopened.
Can't watch the Youtubers without wanting to blind and deafen myself. The game itself is still great, however the combat update was in poor taste at least for me. Went from playing on hard to easy (obligatory git gud).

Hey, if you miss Minecraft you should play it more and think about the reason why it is so awesome! For me it is the endless beauty in being able to create from new ideas.
I used to be a more passive player and now I have discovered that I actually enjoy sharing my creations from the game, it gives playing another depth!
In the end, that is what makes the community too, people playing not only for themselves, but for what they can make and give from it.
Minecraft is like a tool for creating 3D-art for me, apart from the survival game which also has its charm.
Trends may come and go, but YOU are always in charge of doing what YOU enjoy the most. Don't get too attached to where 'everyone' is going is my best advice. I have also had my time playing counterstrike and such games, and got into them because other people played them, but in the end I had to listen to my innermost voice which said that this is not who you want to be, you don't want to spend your life chasing numbers in a killing simulator. If a thing doesn't resonate fully with your values, why continue doing it?
I miss a discussion forum that talked about something other than nostaglia. Minecraft isn't dying-sales are higher than ever. Nothing huge has been removed- the only thing gone is your noobness. This topic has been discussed in over (and I'm not exaggerating) 50 threads.
Maybe it isn't the game that's dying, but this community.
If everyone's so unsatisfied with the current game/community, then why don't we make our own community? I'm serious. Why don't we pick a version (for example, Beta 1.7 or Release 1.6), make a server, and play on it. We could even add a reasonable mod every month to simulate updates. If we got enough people, this would essentially be our own game/community.
Seriously, I understand you can't get that wonder feeling that you did when you were a noob, but you can still enjoy the game with others that prefer the same versions/playstyles. People should stop ranting/complaining about nostalgia (we all have nostalgia) and do something about it.
I started playing Minecraft way back in 2013 and it was by far my favorite game at the time, but these days I typically play games like counter strike and call of duty more than Minecraft. Figured it was time for a change.
Yeah I kinda feel like it won't make a comeback either, but it would be awesome if it did. At least we'll always have mods and crap that we can play around with on our own
I feel like the lack of a mature audience doesn't help.
There are so many trolls and so many people who harass others over very unimportant things. At the end of the day, it's just a game. It's not life.
Everything would be easier if people were like;
"Minecraft's ok, but it's just not fun for me anymore. I'll just play something else."
And other people were like;
"Ok."
Nobody plays the game anymore?
Consider the implications of that - out of 122 million copies sold there are still 55 million players playing the game on at least a monthly basis - that's 45% of all copies ever sold over more than 8 years! TheMasterCaver's First World - possibly the most caved-out world in Minecraft history - includes world download.
TheMasterCaver's World - my own version of Minecraft largely based on my views of how the game should have evolved since 1.6.4.
Why do I still play in 1.6.4?
Nah Mineplex and survival are dead at this point.
