Hm... I'll have to disagree with some of the suggestions on the dimension's basis.
Having a Steampunk or Futuristic-based dimension would immediately feel out of place. A frost one sounds... For lack of a better word, lazy, since we have a dimension based around extreme heat.
The original Aether for what it was did a fantastic job of adding new game elements and an environment which felt like it could fit comfortably into the vanilla game. This is the sort of stuff we've gotta shoot for.
My suggestion(s)
However...
A sort of compromise of a civilization-derived dimensions could be similar to a sort of gigantic, ruined, stone city.
I say this, because... Well, let's face it; Minecraft is a post apocalyptic setting. Some ancient civilization made these stone structures, (dungeons, strongholds, temples) which are fun to explore, yielding all sorts of loot, yet dangerous, with traps and mobs lurking about. All the while with a sort ominous atmosphere.
It'd most likely be a high risk, high reward sort of place, probably quite dark, taking place within titanic caverns with the likes of stalactites, for example, and while sporting high amounts of ore, possibly including a new type of ore.
If not that, then perhaps a sort of place featuring water? Or, a more cosmic setting? Something unique.
Granted I'd argue we fix up the Nether and End and add more to them before we add another whole dimension.
Well, the Steampunk idea is supposed to feel out of place and alien. It's a whole other dimension. Before the Nether and the End were added, they were completely out of place and alien, which made them great ideas for new dimensions.
The Aether is just as lazy as the Frost dimension, since it's literally just an anti-Nether.
A giant stone city definitely works, but I'm not too keen on the idea of trying to make a post-apocalyptic dimension and it all being an underground cave just seems too much like the nether with overworld ores.
Anyway, onto the other dimension ideas:
My problems with an ocean-based dimension are:
It's not alien (I've ridden a boat across many oceans before, this would feel stale)
It would make it even more obvious how the current ocean has been neglected feature-wise
Movement in water is slow and imprecise, and requiring certain enchantments and potions to access most of the content in the dimension doesn't seem like a good idea to me.
A dream dimension is an interesting idea for a lobby, but it kind of seems like a waste since nothing you do there is permanent.
The limbo dimension sounds kind of boring if there's nothing to actually do here.
The frost dimension does seem like a good idea, though again it doesn't seem very alien due to the fact we already have snow biomes. However, I'm on board if the community prefers this idea.

I disagree. An ancient civilization built those, but we have no clue on whether the structures were invaded by similar people and ransacked or if they were just forgotten about. (Or if some catastrophe did happen that created a post-apocalyptic setting.)
If Minecraft had a post-apocalyptic setting, it doesn't portray it very well. The environment seems to be clean (besides the strange mobs, but that really doesn't prove anything either) the grass is green, Villagers exist that have the ability to read and write, smith tools and armor, construct houses and farm. Not only that, but outcasts from the Villages (Illagers) are able to build huge mansions, or at least small huts (Witches). Both Illagers and Witches have dabbled in magic. So it appears as though if there was a catastrophe, it must have happened long, long before the player appeared on the scene.
While the generated structures could suggest that an apocolypse or disaster happened, when it happened and if the world has recovered isn't specified by Minecraft.

Well of course a new dimension is supposed to feel alien compared to the Overworld. However, it shouldn't feel completely alien compared to the game. Nobody (to my knowledge) has yet provided an explanation or rationale to how this fits in with vanilla, and what its relationship is to the other dimensions.
It's not alien (I've ridden a boat across many oceans before, this would feel stale)
It would make it even more obvious how the current ocean has been neglected feature-wise

1. Just because a new dimension can be alien doesn't mean it has to be. Also, this wouldn't just be an endless ocean; it would have ghostly (not zombified like the nether, ghostly) versions of ocean mobs and potentially even pirates or something.
2. Yeah, the ocean has been extremely neglected by the developers. They don't have an excuse either. They could have added actual content to the ocean biome, but they seem to think it's more important to other things that are trivial compared to what they could have done. Fun Fact: I have a suggestions series (3, parts, 2 parts are already done; part 3 will be out soon!) called Ocean Improvements that can be found by clicking my signature.
3. I mostly agree. However, a lot of that is what would make the dimension challenging.
Here's another dimension idea: Space!
This may suffer from the same lack of connection to the game as the steampunk dimension idea, but here me out.
From now on, any blocks pushed/placed above the build limit would become a falling sand entity that falls up- this would be because it is going into space.
If the player were to be launched more than 5 blocks above the build limit, the player would start to fall up, too, but would gain an air bar (just like when underwater) but would lose all of the bubbles in 1 second, and would take damage a lot quicker.
It wouldn't look like space yet, though, since it'd basically be the top of the atmosphere. Helmets enchanted with Respiration would allow the player to survive a little longer up there, but only around 20-30 seconds. So, the first thing we would need would be a way to hold a lot of air. Now, what is an item in Minecraft that can be used for compact storage of things? Oh, right- shulker shells! There would be a new kind of item, called the Shulker Canister (name can change) that would be crafted like this, with the wool representing a shulker shell:
The idea is that the power of the shulker shells would be utilized to hold a lot of air, similar to how it is used to hold a lot of items in shulker boxes. The texture would have two states: open and closed. It would start out open, and it would basically look like a bucket with a shulker shell above it. When in the Overworld, right clicking with it would fill it up with air and put it in its closed state. Right-clicking the canister when its full would provide an extra 3 minutes of breathing time if you are underwater or in space, and this effect would be stackable. There would be a rare chance, however, that when taking in the air from a canister it would explode, meaning the item would break. It would have no durability bar, however.
Now, how would you get to space? The answer is simple: elytra. With elytra boosting added, it would only make sense that it would be used to progress in the game. So, if a player goes above y=270, the player would be teleported to the space dimension. Preferably, there would be no "Loading World" screen, but instead the visual loop of the player ascending until the loading is done. I'm not sure if that could work, but it would be awesome if it could.
Finally, what's in space? I'm honestly not sure yet. This is the part where we build off of this idea as a community. Also, the way the earth would be displayed would be similar to flying up high: you can see a circular version of the land, but it is still flat. This is so that it is neither confirmed nor denied that the Minecraft world is round. Having a space dimension could allow for other additions, like (possibly) a moon dimension. We would just have to be sure that the space dimension doesn't take over the entire game, and also that it still retains characteristics of Minecraft's vague fantasy theme.
The Aether may seem have been lazy in concept but it still bothered to actually fit within the realm of the game, all the while adding clever gameplay in the way of new hazards, blocks, and mobs.
Steampunk doesn't feel alien at all. The only sense it feels alien is that it fits in a different game.
I think the reason we all assume other dimensions besides the aether to be "alien" is because of the dimensions that we've already had. The Nether is clearly representative of Hell, and the End is sort of a counter hell, albeit in a unique way. The aether fits with the overworld, nether, and end all nicely. They're all about biblical / religious themes. From that perspective, any new dimension must be connected to the real world, underworld, or void / sky world.
But that doesn't have to be the case. Imagine if a space dimension came first. While Minecraft has two dimensions, earth and space, someone suggests a hell dimension. Everyone would say it's too "alien" for the game.
Minecraft's central theme is about expressing creativity and promoting discovery- the end poem all but says that. Minecraft is not a biblical allusion. To that end, I believe any dimension can be added as long as it isn't too related to the Nether or End. Those three are part of a "dimension group" that is loosely based on religion. This new dimension can be in a separate group consisting of it and the overworld, with a different focus.
If we were to go with this route, I'd suggest the way to getting to the 4th dimension is through the overworld, not far end islands; so it isn't on the linear path from nether portal --> ender dragon. The path could diverge, adding to the sandbox feel. You could go to this new dimension whenever you'd like, but it's difficulty would be focused for late-game.

You have an interesting verdict. I, too, think a dimension that wasn't in the direct linear path of the game progression would be awesome. Like you said, it would definitely contribute to the sandbox feel.
That being said, what do you think of my space dimension idea? I know it's not the best, but I wanted to get the idea out there.

I think the space has a spark, but it'd have to be done right. I think a "space" theme is a bit too similar to the End's theme, but let's be real, the Nether and End have a good bit of natural themes covered.
I think having it accessed by Elytra would be great and unique way of entering a realm. It could be a post-game area for gathering primarily building materials, as not to be completely based around progression.
Perhaps instead of space, it takes place high in the ozone layer, with floating islands?
Perhaps instead of space, it takes place high in the ozone layer, with floating islands?
Wouldn't that make it too much like the end? Plus, Mojang has rejected the "floating islands dimension" idea multiple times before, right?
Also, I've thought about having a dimension that is separate from the normal game progression, and honestly I'm second-guessing my space dimension idea...
If we were to go with a space dimension, I'd say keep it in space with lots of stars (to differentiate from the end). There could be asteroids, UFO's, and maybe rare space whales.
The main draw could be "planets" which are dimensions in themselves. Similar to my dream dimension idea, each planet would have a different RGB rock color, atmo color, generation, ore (not for armor, something else), and structures. That way, the space dimension would have enough features to make it unique, but primarily serve as a gateway to randomly generated, completely unique dimensions.
Or, we could create an entire "solar system" filled with a set number of original planets in fixed locations. A barren planet, toxic planet, gas planet, and frozen planet come to mind off the top of my head. This option would allow us to go in depth and add unique features to each planet, while the former would take minecraft's random generation to the next level.

You definitely bring up some interesting ideas. However, I feel like we should stick things in space itself, as anything past the moon would be getting pretty complicated, and having the moon as one of these "dimensions" would make it feel a lot like the end dimension. (Unless the moon had gray rock like in real life). I was thinking there could maybe be some sort of dungeons that can be found in the space dimension, as well as space whales and such as you mentioned. One of the main attractions could be mining ores on asteroids; there could be new ores that are useful for new things.
As much as I love the space dimension idea (partially because I created it), I feel like the dimension we pick should be separate from the normal game progression, since, as mentioned earlier, it would really add to the sandbox feel.
Also, here's something to think about: what if we tried to make the End dimension the moon? I don't know how reasonable it would be, though, considering how far apart the main End island is from the rest of the End islands.
My main issue with having more than one "planet" you could go to is that they could quickly become underdeveloped and neglected. I mean, the Overworld oceans only have 3 mobs, and 2 of them are in a rare structure. Can you imagine how bare whole planets would be if the Overworld is already sort of bare?
Okay, please remind me of 2 things:
- When have we decided we're going to pick a dimension idea by?
- Our goal is for Mojang to actually read and implement this, right? In that case, we need to be reasonable in the amount of effort we're asking to be put
into this dimension.
And, finally, another dimension idea...
The Prehistoric Dimension:
How do you get there?
I'm not sure yet. It would not be something that requires post-enderdragon materials, though.
What is in it?
There would be prehistoric mobs, such as dinosaurs and pterosaurs. Additionally, there would be unique tree types that could found in the dimension, making it useful to even people that just want to build. This would be a challenging dimension to live in, however. Some prehistoric animals would be able to destroy blocks, acting as a more lethal version of the creeper.
Speaking of creepers, how about a prehistoric creeper? It would be a giant, 4 block tall "plant." It would be able to sink back into the ground, hiding itself from the player. It would pop out when there is a player near by and try to blow the player up, just like normal creepers do. It would sort of have a face at the top of it, and it would look vaguely similar to that of a creeper. It would also technically be a mob, so it could spawn and despawn.
Additionally, this dimension would be a haven for both those who want a challenge and those who want to collect pets. There would be some small tameable creatures, as well as some large creatures you could attempt to capture if you're brave enough. When you spawn in this dimension, you are not at the portal/entrance. Instead, you would be randomly placed from around 500 blocks away from it. To find it, you would either be able to use a normal compass or craft a new kind of compass that points to it. To make things even more challenging, elytra wouldn't work in this dimension. I need an in-game reason for this- someone please help me come up with a reasonable reason to why the elytra don't work in this dimension.
Who would this benefit?
- Players seeking a challenge
- Players who want to collect pets, or bring monsters to troll their friends
- Players that enjoy building, and would like to be open to new building opportunities
- Nerds like me who like dinosaurs

1. My original idea was the 24th (that was a week after we imposed this topic) but I'm fine with extending it. How about the 28th, a week from today?
2. I suppose... but I don't want this to be boggled down by realism. If it's an absurdly difficult thing to add, it shouldn't be in, but beyond that let's add as much stuff as possible. We all agree that the current dimensions need to be filled up a bit more, so we shouldn't limit ourselves to something realistic like just two mobs and one structure. Instead, we should push it to the absolute limit, to where it wouldn't possibly ever need revisiting in a later update. If you want, envision us as suggesting this in the future, after the nether, end, and ocean have gotten updates.
The Prehistoric Dimension certainly seems interesting. It has a unique purpose and theme. Perhaps the world would generate based of the Overworld's generation, to suggest that you are time traveling? My one worry is it would look too similar to jungle biomes of the Overworld. How would it maintain a unique color pallet? Lastly, while dinosaurs are cool imo, I don't think each species with their complicated names should be included. Maybe instead just one ground dino mob, one flying dino, and a t-rex. "Spawn Brontosaurus" sounds straight out of Jurassic Craft. Oh wait it is.

If we get a deadline, then can we get a poll? I think that would help determine whose idea is liked the best. You might also want to consider closing submissions, since I think we've got enough ideas now to pull from and if we keep getting new ideas it could be a while before a deadline is finalized and the suggestion moves on to the next stage. If a new idea that is absolutely amazing comes up, we can extend the deadline again, but otherwise, October 28th should be the latest that we stay on deciding a theme.

The jungles would be made out of different kinds of wood, and the grass in general could perhaps be greener. Additionally, (and this is something that is scientifically accurate), the water could be a little green do differentiate it from the normal Overworld. For the dinosaur names thing, I was thinking they would have made-up names, like how "Husk" is the name of the desert zombie instead of "Mummy" or "Desert Zombie." Having unique names would also release the pressure of trying to make them scientifically accurate. Something else we could do is have multiple "Time Periods" that the player could access. Maybe you get a special item that allows you to get to a new time period after being through one. This would allow us to add as many creatures as we want without risking over-saturation for one dimension. Also, there were no "Flying Dinosaurs" except birds. Those were called Pterosaurs. Yes, I know I'm a nerd.
If you want, envision us as suggesting this in the future, after the nether, end, and ocean have gotten updates.
This is my main issue with suggesting things. I would like to suggest, for example, a new boss, but the Ender Dragon fight needs to be fixed. I would like to suggest new blocks, but current ones need more stairs and slabs. I would like to suggest new mobs, but there are current ones that are either non-existent (like visible fish, birds, etc.) or completely underdeveloped (i.e. the polar bear). It's gotten to the point where Minecraft updates feel redundant for me, because the majority of the new features are just new things that momentarily distract me from the absence of depth in current features. However, once I finish oohing and aahing at the cool new Woodland Mansion shown at Minecon, I take off my denial glasses and see the game for what it is, and what it's become.
So, I think we should all envision this as a suggestion for the future, or else we'll be stuck in a loop trying to fix current parts of the game.
The real trouble is coming up with a dimension that fits just right, in terms of both theme and gameplay where we can envision, and not have so much as an annoyance with it fitting in, all the while staying unique.
Frankly, I don't think in the future, and even now, that we so much as need a 4th dimension; rather, tuning up the ones we currently have. I know, that kind of breaks the point of this thread.
I'll just list what's been suggested already, and perhaps see if we get a spark somewhere:

To be honest the only one that seems like it might fit right in is the frost dimension. Why? Because it's something the player would expect. The other ideas are cool, but the frost dimension, as cliche as it might be, seems the most fitting in my opinion.

Picking up with what AMPPL50 said, I was actually sitting on the idea of contributing parts of each of those into a singular dimension. I can actually see it working very well if it's done right. I'd look at doodling up a basic sketch of what I envision, but idk if I can pull that off.

For color schemes, how does this look?
I'd say it looks okay. The sky might be a little too whimsical, though.
If we are going to include multiple dimension ideas in one, we could have mammoths in the frost dimension. We need to be careful, though, as this dimension probably shouldn't be as diverse as the Overworld.
Alright, judging by how the polls have gone so far, it seems like people agree most on the frost dimension. We need to make sure everyone that is participating votes, though. Vote vote vote, people!
How many people are even doing this? We should probably figure that out too...
EDIT: I think we have 8 people at most. As far as I know, only 6 of those have really been active.
Before I wasn't completely into the frost theme, but now that I've seen that I'm onboard.
So since it's apparent that frost is going to at least be involved, we should consider adding any new ideas from the other themes, as AMPPL50 suggested. For example, we could have structures resembling a ruined city, steampunk gear, or a prehistoric mob. The frost idea isn't that defined at the moment- we don't even know how hard its going to be.
An idea for the frost dimension.
I'd suggest one of the dimension's primary resources be "crystals". Crystals would come in multiple colors, and providing colored light. They would be semi-transparent but very strong, a bit less than obsidian.
In retrospect, it's a buffed version of glowstone that provides colored light.:unsure:

Since steampunk and space seem tied for second place, how about:
A frozen steampunk dimension...in space!
I'm on board with colored crystals and colored light, though for that we'd need yet another lighting engine rewrite. Colored lighting is technically currently possible, but it's kind of hacky and doesn't work with smooth lighting (or shaders, I'd imagine).

Check out my suggestions! Here is one of them:
The Aether may seem have been lazy in concept but it still bothered to actually fit within the realm of the game, all the while adding clever gameplay in the way of new hazards, blocks, and mobs.
Steampunk doesn't feel alien at all. The only sense it feels alien is that it fits in a different game.
Figured it was time for a change.
Check out my suggestions! Here is one of them:
I think the space has a spark, but it'd have to be done right. I think a "space" theme is a bit too similar to the End's theme, but let's be real, the Nether and End have a good bit of natural themes covered.
I think having it accessed by Elytra would be great and unique way of entering a realm. It could be a post-game area for gathering primarily building materials, as not to be completely based around progression.
Perhaps instead of space, it takes place high in the ozone layer, with floating islands?
Figured it was time for a change.
Wouldn't that make it too much like the end? Plus, Mojang has rejected the "floating islands dimension" idea multiple times before, right?
Also, I've thought about having a dimension that is separate from the normal game progression, and honestly I'm second-guessing my space dimension idea...
Check out my suggestions! Here is one of them:

Nerds like me who like dinosaursCheck out my suggestions! Here is one of them:

-Cyber/Futuristic
-Steampunk
-Eternal Sea/Davy Jones' locker
-Frost crystal dimension
-Endless ruined, stone city
-Space
-Ozone islands
-Prehistoric
Figured it was time for a change.
To be honest the only one that seems like it might fit right in is the frost dimension. Why? Because it's something the player would expect. The other ideas are cool, but the frost dimension, as cliche as it might be, seems the most fitting in my opinion.
Check out my suggestions! Here is one of them:
Picking up with what AMPPL50 said, I was actually sitting on the idea of contributing parts of each of those into a singular dimension. I can actually see it working very well if it's done right. I'd look at doodling up a basic sketch of what I envision, but idk if I can pull that off.
For color schemes, how does this look?
Figured it was time for a change.
I'd say it looks okay. The sky might be a little too whimsical, though.
If we are going to include multiple dimension ideas in one, we could have mammoths in the frost dimension. We need to be careful, though, as this dimension probably shouldn't be as diverse as the Overworld.
Check out my suggestions! Here is one of them:
Alright, judging by how the polls have gone so far, it seems like people agree most on the frost dimension. We need to make sure everyone that is participating votes, though. Vote vote vote, people!
How many people are even doing this? We should probably figure that out too...
EDIT: I think we have 8 people at most. As far as I know, only 6 of those have really been active.
Check out my suggestions!
