Even though we play the most recent versions, when it comes to running my home server, have been basically stuck on 1.6.2. The majority of my world is packed with subway stations using traincraft and floating castles. Was willing to give up a portion of the mods no longer made except for traincraft. The train lines are so long, it would actually take you 14 hours to go from one end to the other. Most of the mods seem to go to 1.7.10, but when I tried to upgrade, got a tun of errors so have a feeling, some of the mods arent the versions they claim to be. I ran a test to see what would happen without the traincraft mod, but it ended up filling in the tunnels and removing the tracks. Here are a few pictures that show why I haven't upgraded my server past 1.6.2.
You could edit the world with something like MCEdit and replace all of the rails with vanilla rails or rails from another mod (but you would have to know the block ID).

It's probably because in 1.7 there is a block ID same as the traincraft mod's rail ID. It happened when for some reason I couldn't load my 1.7.10 forge account after new launcher came out. So i just when and did it in 1.12 and it replaced all Archemides Ships Mod's air balloons with iron trapdoors. It had some vehicle designs that i wanted to rebuild into another 1.12 world so i could use a up-to-date-version reference.
Backup the files of the map and load everything without mods in a later version and then add mods again. If that doesn't work, use a Minecraft version converter. If that still doesn't work, use MCEdit and convert.
