Now, my first time playing Minecraft on a server back in 2011 was a great experience. I couldn't believe how big and exciting other player's worlds were. I remember making a home on someone's massive world and having a great time. Since that day, I played on servers daily for about a year, until I got bored of the game and went on to other things.
5 years had past and I had made my return to Minecraft, only to have a huge shock. I was looking at a server list, to see huge mega servers such as Hypixel and Mineplux (At least I think that's what it's called) who have huge amounts of players every day. I think hypixel had 50,000. I laughed when i saw how minigames are programmed to automatically start, rather than the spleef days where you had to build the arena and teleport the players in manually.
However, my main point on this thread is how every server may as well be the same. After searching for a good 2 hours, I came to realize that every server has the same stuff every time. By that I mean Skyblock, Prison, Creative and KitPvP. I can't seem to get away from it. I mean, whats the point of exploring new worlds, if each one has the same stuff on it as the last one you visited. It's pretty disappointing in my opinion.
I am putting a poll on this thread to see if other people can relate to this. I am very curious to see the results, so please answer!
Servers were much more impressive 3-6 years ago. They did so much with so little. That isn't to say many modern servers don't also do good things, but it's just not as appealing and diverse.
With the development of more and more plugins, especially big and popular ones like Essentials, GriefPrevention, Factions, and PermissionsEX, it's easy to forget that a server, to be special, needs to be customized and given love to. Servers like Hypixel are still great fun and have lots of players, but I do agree with you back in the spleef days where there'd be 5 people in a secret room and you'd get teleported manually. But I like to think of it this way: Hypixel gets over 50,000 players per day. Imagine how many people you'd have to pay to teleport, watch, and monitor the rules. To do it easily, they just developed plugins to automate it all.
Hypixel spent a lot of time customizing and designing their server to be unique at the time it was made, and it still is unique. The issue comes when people want to make servers like Hypixel and these big popular servers. Most of these server hosters don't understand that it takes a lot of time, dedication, and customization to actually make a good server. I used to play on a server called MCTopia, which was a server with plugins but had an experience like survival. Over time I donated, got higher ranks, and even almost became staff at one point, I knew everyone. And then one day it just crashed (not literally, figuratively). The community died out to larger, new servers with tons of plugins and customizability. Nowadays, there just isn't much respect or demand for these servers that just copy Hypixel.
Of course, there are lots of servers out there that do put in this dedication, but the issue is that they end up getting shoved to the back of server lists from all of those that just constantly say "vote vote vote for me!". This is why when I'm searching for servers, I start at the back of the list and go forward. (Of course, skipping past those hundreds of servers that are offline). Nonetheless, I think servers nowadays are still very good and fun, they've just been died down from the fact that the same plugins get used every time, and there's not much customization in the configurations of what these plugins can actually do.
In the old days people rly are hosting servers to have fun with friends across the world (Kinda like NDS).
NOW? They are just money-making machines that doesn't violate the EULA.
And how did they do it? Google and install free open source plugins, combine and alter them (by "hiring" code developers with no incomes), and host the server forcing players to spend hard currency by causing gameplay disadvantages (doesn't violate the EULA directly, but well... indirectly...). Kinda like my dear Mainland China where people make replicas ( ofc, combining unrelated features) and sell them as their own brand.
I wish we can retrieve the fun that we used to have in the old days. Sadly, none of these can be reversed.
(In fact, it is still possible if somebody is willing to spend their hard-earned cash(perhaps) to host such a server.)
[This reply is completely out of shape and kinda like some mumbo jumbo (NOT the youtuber). Spend about 5 minutes to get what I'm trying to say.]
Servers have most definitely declined since many years ago. No more can you find servers with peaceful communities, or relaxed SMP and freebuild creative servers. Or even unique minigames and gamemodes. All it is nowadays is constant spamming of the same gamemode over and over again, with servers finding more ways to pull transactions out of their rear and try to shove it in your face. All the old good servers are dead, and have been for a while.

In fact, I remembered that there is still some of these servers. But they are like in Asia, mostly Taiwan and Hong Kong. That's where I don't rly need to worry about being assassinated or raided (or being bored of, haha). Sadly, most of those servers I played are closed (money, money and bananas~...).
All you have to do is hunt through the server section a bit. There indeed are vanilla survival, community based servers. They just get buried by the giant servers extremely quickly. Trust me, they're out there.
I really wish we could have some of those vanilla servers that existed back in the beta days, I loved the sense of community and cooperation these servers had. Now the only way to enjoy vanilla MC is Singleplayer or LAN, which is a shame because the game has definitely improved since the beta.
You can get a lot of the vanilla feel on Realms guaranteed
You have to pay for Realms, plus I only have like 2 or 3 friends that still play this game.
I agree, but to get a decent enough server you will pay for it as well. As it is not recommended to host a server on your PC. I rent a realm if you and your friends wanna come there (not advertising).
(In fact, it is still possible if somebody is willing to spend their hard-earned cash(perhaps) to host such a server.)
In fact, that is exactly what i was thinking, and I think I might take charge. Maybe a building server where anyone can add to a giant floating island and make whatever they like, or a server based on working together to survive, idk they are just some ideas I had.
As it is not recommended to host a server on your PC.
Really, the only time I would not recommend hosting a server on your PC is if your opening it to the public. However if they are just going to play with friends, then there should be no problem. There are some really good tutorials out there that make port forwarding easy if your struggling to start one yourself.
As mentioned above, take some time to browse the Servers sub-forum here. There are tons of servers that contradict the complaints in this thread and meet the requirements of others. You just have to put a bit of effort into your research and get beyond the huge, popular servers.
I thought of a reason why somebody hates these small community servers.
(It's kinda like my experience, but of course, that's not my stance here)
Imagine you put like 2 months of effort to a huge castle, added Shaders mod and post it into the forum.
However, one day, the server suddenly closed. Where's the 2-month work? What did you get from it? A post?
Not all people play these small community servers for short-term fun, they actually want them to stay.
In essence, you lost your hard work when the small server closed. (Unlike large servers like... those 10k+ players server, they won't close in the future...)

It would hardly seem to be that. Most players don't spend the majority of their time on a single project, most would get board by then. Back in the day, even small servers wouldn't have issues with dying out. Part of what killed the small servers is not just the dwindling community population, but when the minigame servers were getting big they destroyed the playerbase of a lot of smaller servers. To this day the larger servers still stifle the smaller servers from chances to shine.
A fair amount of the servers in the Servers sub-forum are dead player-wise, or shut down completely.

Indeed... I run one. Nothing big or spectacular; but safe and trusted members. Like another responder said... legit vanilla servers get buried under bigger servers because of the forum rules here.... I can't 'bump' our thread because there's too few members, and we would get called out; where larger servers can have Joe, Mike and Sarah bump it one day, and Peter, John and Jake the next, etc. Also, small servers have a low turn-over rate, and don't WANT to actively recruit tonnes of players (hence the 'trusted' community). So their threads get buried. On top of all that, we can't even create a new server thread unless the most recently used thread hasn't been touched for 6 months.... (Yeah; I got nailed for trying to start a 'clean' thread so I could track who applied during a given season).
But my type of server obviously isn't everyone else's; we're a small community, maybe 1-3 people on nightly. But the server's been live and well for over 3 years now with no map resets, no grief events, etc. You can't do 'large' servers that way.... So if you want to be able to log in and see 20 people on at any hour of the day, you're not gonna have much luck finding a good SMP vanilla server that is actively recruiting.

Right. You guys sound quite similar to us. And when we do get people interested, they quickly find out that we're not what they're looking for, at all, since we tend toward high tech, high efficiency automation, long term projects, and everyone works together. So yes, us, too, typically less than a handful on each night.
The problem is audience too. Pardon me for saying this, but these days the averange minecraft player is MUCH younger than they used to be. The mindset on what they want (putting effort vs instant gratification) is very different from what was.
No problem, I can't agree with you more. Playing on a server, I feel I can tell roughly what age group (8-12, 13-18, 18+) a player is in by what they say in chat, build etc. Typically, as you said, its between the 8-12 age groups that dominate the Minecraft community in numbers. The younger players don't seem to understand that to do something amazing takes time and effort as you said. Evaluating what you said, I thought of the idea of a gray-list, and only letting players you accept(by making an application system) to interact with the server. Gray-listed players can still look around and see what others have made, however they can not build, break blocks etc. Anyway that's just an idea I had.
