I got them going using the java version ( this is the one we brought, but it came with the windows 10 version and that was preinstalled so they just played that )
I downloaded the java version, and opened to LAN but it never found the server, eventually after messing around a few times I managed to add the server in by IP, but it probably means I will be required each time they want to play because it does not seem totally straight forward ?
I thought the windows 10 verion let them play between xbox , pc and phone ?
but it wouldn't let them add friends ? the whole MS account thing seemed to make it way too hard
I brought the java version TWICE one for each child. it comes with a FREE code to the windows 10 version we tried both o9n windows 10 and it would not let them add each other as friends, because they are child accounts .. and I could not see away to change this.
so then we tried the java version ( ON BOTH ) and it isn't straight forward, maybe something in windows 10 is blocking the server from showing up on its own ? which is annoying because now I am required every time they want to play with each other.
If you are having trouble getting the "Open to LAN" functionality working properly with the Minecraft: Java Edition, please create a thread in the Support section asking for assistance with that:
Assuming you are trying to connect to LAN on the Java version:
Make sure that both computers are setup to the same network you are using. Make sure a firewall is not blocking the client from connecting to the host, which would be the host of the server. Open to LAN and see if it can work. It's actually straightforward like that... I don't see any other reason why it shouldn't work if the firewall is not blocking the client.

Too add to this, some antivirus software is a bit overzealous when it comes to LAN. Check AV specific settings as well.
so I got the java version, but the kids have been playing the windows 10 version that was preinstalled.
I got a second one so they have a version each
I wanted to have one computer host the world and let the other join.
it seemed like a little things but I cant find a way to do it.
Is it better to use the java version ? can they use their world from the windows 10 version ?
sorry I never played minecraft and I need some help from you guys
Java version as @skinnydip said is only going to work with the java version.
Plus java version is the most up to date version of minecraft with all the latest updates.
There should be an option in the menu to setup a LAN game.
From there if the computers are on the same network then they should be able to find the LAN world.
Hope this helped!
