Can someone explain to me why everyone is making such a big deal about Minecraft Java Edition. Besides the days in which Minecraft was a browser only game and before MS bought Mojang. Minecraft was a Java based game. Only for the last couple of years after MS purchased it that you didn't need to use Java for the installer.
The way everyone is expressing interest as if it is a completely new game. Its pretty much always been a Java based game. I mean Notch loved writing in Java so there for it always has been a java based game. Not understanding the Java Edition Push??

The fear that everyone has is that Microsoft is going to discontinue the Java version, and is going to port the C version to Linux and Mac. (Or worse, they won't, so you'll have to get a Windows 10 PC, iPhone or Console to play Minecraft.)
This also brings the fear that not only will the same mods that were used on the Java edition be impossible to recreate on the C edition, but community content will be limited to pay-to-get maps, resource packs and skins.
I feel like there are points to either side, and benefits on both sides as well. (And if Microsoft wants to be nice, maybe they'll develop a good Mod API for Minecraft C and they won't put restrictions on community content for the PC. If that happens, I would gladly accept being able to play Minecraft with anyone else no matter what system.)

My avatar is a texture from a small block game I made in Python. It's not very good and it probably won't work if you install it.
I'm very alone in my Minecraft worlds as I don't have a very good internet connection to run a server. If you're like me, you might be interested in my Posse mod suggestion.

The PR disaster alone would destroy the rest of the products. Imagine how mad everyone would be if M$ makes Hypixel, Mineplex, and other servers hit the fans.

Eh... Not quite.
Assuming that all Microsoft is doing is discontinuing updates for Minecraft, some people would actually be happy because the modding community for the discontinued Java version would be able to thrive without constantly updating their mods. (Of course, until people inevitably stop joining this tiny modding community.)
Now, from what I've heard, the pocket edition actually has more people playing it than the PC edition. This may not be true, but if it is, that means that a lot of people won't be effected by this change at all.
I'm not sure if Microsoft is legally able to stop people from hosting servers of their game, although it would be pretty pointless...

What about all of the Plugins Developers? Hosting Providers? Configuration Shops? Map Making Shops? and so on?
It not JUST the players get the impact, everyone getting the impact, from the players down to the underlying operations of the JAVA edition.
Shutting it down overnight would be a nightmare. Over months "dying out" sure, but that's assumed with any game. Even major games like WoW will eventually hit "00:00" on their zoom device...

Maybe not directly but all they have to do is pull the plug on the authentication servers - even singleplayer requires that you log in at least once in order to play (I believe you need an account to play even demo mode) and while that can easily be bypassed without cracking the game* multiplayer would require using a cracked launcher, which is illegal (so is distributing the game unless it were made open source, so no new users would legally be able to play). Of course, they let you switch a server to "offline mode" simply by editing a line in server.properties so you can log in without an authenticated account so there's that (one can only imagine the security issues though, especially on a large server, unless there are plugins for that).
*The game itself does not care if you are logged in or not; in fact, if you play 1.6.4 or earlier versions on the current launcher they do not receive a session ID; the only effect that I noticed was that the Realms button no longer appears, not that it works anyway for any version older than the latest.

But the AFTER EFFECT is what not going to be easily absorbed. Cutting the line is easiest thing a business can do. It's the PR, legal fights (people and even businesses that revolves around the game), and even their rep at large.
Why would anyone wanna pay for a M$ product again knowing that they simply cut a product hot? I don't know about everyone else but I wouldn't go near a company that could one day just "cut me off" of my dependable services (M$ OS versions, software packages, and etc).

Then you would have to not go near Nintendo because they do stuff like this all the time. They've been doing it a lot more recently.
To download the other ones you need to make a folder in the versions folder for minecraft and put the client and JSON file for the versions in there. They all need to be named the same aside from file extensions. Once you do that, you will be able to choose that version when making a new profile with the minecraft launcher.
The issues are two fold. First and foremost Minecraft has always been a Java game, that's how this whole thing started. Therefor it has always been called "Minecraft". If you mentioned "Minecraft" you were referring to the Java edition.
Not only has Mojang renamed 'Minecraft' into 'Minecraft Java Edition' they also renamed the Pocket Edition (or mobile or whatever) into 'Minecraft'. So now if you mention 'Minecraft' they're trying to make it so that you're actually talking about the pocket/mobile/etc. edition. And that ticks plenty of people off because Minecraft has always been Java. Basically, according to some players, the original players of the game have now been moved to the sidelines and they're no longer considered official Minecraft players. Instead anyone playing the mobile editions are now considered "official" (note: not my opinion but just what I perceived around me).
The other issue has already been mentioned by others: the fear that Mojang could very well focus their attention completely onto the other platforms and discontinue support for the Java edition. I think those are valid concerns because it is a fact that Mojang / Microsoft might be able to make a whole lot more money on those "portable platforms". Where we can simply download any skin we'd like you'd have to pay for it on the console editions.
It will take a long time before people make that switch, the concept the "Minecraft" means the quote-unquote "Java Edition" is so ingrained and while avid Pocket Edition players will most likely embrace the new system even they may refuse to switch. It doesn't concern me whether it's called the Java Edition or not however I will continue to call it "Minecraft".
Another reason for distinguishing the original Minecraft as Minecraft JE is because, in their "infinite wisdom" MicroSoft named the cross platform Minecraft Edition "Windows 10 Minecraft". Now I play Minecraft JE on a computer that is running under the 64 bit Windows 10 operating system. Do you see the confusion factor?

It's a bad thing because it means people will make a lot of annoying threads asking about Java Edition.
Why am I here

TheMasterCaver's First World - possibly the most caved-out world in Minecraft history - includes world download.
TheMasterCaver's World - my own version of Minecraft largely based on my views of how the game should have evolved since 1.6.4.
Why do I still play in 1.6.4?

Not saying that you shouldn't...
Remember those versions that minecraft pranked us with? Specifically:
Those are still downloadable! Watch this video for 2.0:
