There used to be several tens of thousand on servers like minecade, mineplex etc, now there are only about 1k on good days on minecade. And you should consider yourself lucky if you find a modded server with over 20 people on at once. One year ago, modded servers had 50-200 on at once sometimes, and where very well developed and had good staff. Now, there are barely any that aren't 0/max and normal minecraft servers are usually only 100-250 for the average non minigame server. Is this going to continue?
Well, if you ask official sources (Mojang) they tell a very different story:
Minecraft continues to sell at a mind-boggling pace: Developer Mojang has now sold 122 million copies of the sandbox exploration game across all platforms, the Microsoft-owned Swedish studio announced today.
Microsoft’s previous milestone was 100 million copies, which Minecraft reached in early June 2016. That means that a whopping 22 million people bought a copy of the game in the last nine months. Asked by Polygon, a Microsoft representative clarified that although the company has been allowing owners of the original Java-based PC/Mac version of Minecraft to get a free copy of Minecraft: Windows 10 Edition, Microsoft does not include those redemptions in its sales calculation.
“The 122M units is paid units to players only,” the spokesperson told Polygon.
Mojang also announced today that Minecraft currently has 55 million monthly active players, an increase of 37.5 percent from the 40 million that Microsoft reported back in June. It’s possible that the recent release of version 1.0 of Minecraft’s Windows 10 Edition and Pocket Edition — the former is essentially a port of the latter — helped raise the number of monthly active users. Mojang released the Ender Update for those versions in mid-December, officially bringing them out of beta.
However, it needs to be noted that they attribute most of the increase in sales and players to the Pocket and Windows 10 Editions - which cannot play on traditional PC servers; for the PC there is also Realms, which may be becoming more popular; for example, as advances to commands and resource packs (which I personally think is what Mojang considers to be the "mod API") lets you do more and more advanced things (since Realms otherwise does not allow using mods).
That said, I've noticed a huge decline in activity on these forums in recent years, more so in recent months - the evidence is blatantly obvious when you look at thread and post counts, then look at the first page of any subforum (for example, 1.2 million posts in Survival Mode? That's over about 8 years so there should be over 400 posts per day - it barely gets even 1/20th of that these days - and activity has been declining for a long time as my post here shows so it really should be even higher). Many active posters also quit or drastically slowed down in recent months (for example; if you look through their posts you can see that they were pretty active until late last year).
Even more telling is this - normally traffic increases through the summer (based on looking at this in past years) but something very different is happening this year:
When combined with Mojang's data I see a huge shift in the community/playerbase happening. One thing that I'd really like to see is a breakdown of players by version, as well as an update to sales by version, currently only this outdated chart on the Wiki.

Weird thing that in my country new servers keep coming and growing and old ones got even more crowded. I guess it's because Minecraft just became popular, along with all the new MC Youtubers emerging in my country
I do not see much indication of a loss in popularity or even market saturation; the consistency in sales since late 2010 is truly remarkable, more closely resembling a staple commodity than a short-lived fad. True, all the increase in the rate of sales has come from other versions - but they have not yet been able to displace PC yet (extrapolating PE sales gives around 70 million copies sold).
Also, I suspect that more people are playing Realms these days, especially as vanilla gains more and more "modding" capabilities (command blocks, resource packs, loot tables, structures, the new "data pack" upcoming in 1.13, etc, which I believe is what Mojang has in mind for the "mod" API, which will be anything but modding in the traditional sense), and people getting tired of hackers and/or preferring to play with close friends/family (I have never played multiplayer so I have no personal experience in why people may not like it as much anymore; my own personal interest in the game has not changed for more than four years of only playing singleplayer).

Time haven't been nice to these forums. Quality of posts has gone down, there's no developer interaction here anymore, ads and frequent changes to the forum itself make it clunky to use, and it's no longer even considered an official forum by Mojang. Most people have either quit these forums or moved to the Subreddit, where the devs actually read and reply to stuff.
To download the other ones you need to make a folder in the versions folder for minecraft and put the client and JSON file for the versions in there. They all need to be named the same aside from file extensions. Once you do that, you will be able to choose that version when making a new profile with the minecraft launcher.
I have a friend who is a hacker, and his story implies a very different thing.
My friend tried to join mineplex with his hacks, but he immediately got banned for life for hacking.
Also, I have only seen 1 hacker on that server.
So it seems that mineplex cracks down on hackers pretty well.
Mineplex doesn't always crack down on hackers that well. *cough* xTurtle *cough*
I have seen lots of hackers get away with hacks. If you are playing Bawk Bawk Battles, obviously you won't see many hackers. Go play on Micro Battles, and you will see a TON. Also, your friend may not know how to hack very well. xTurtle can get away with flying around maps and not get banned for extended periods of time.
Minecraft isnt Dying mineplex is a terrible server Hacker infested you will find a hacker in every other game at least
Why did you just bring this up randomly? This thread is about Minecraft loosing popularity, not about posting run-on sentences about servers being hacker infested.
Clearly, Minecraft IS loosing popularity. You will notice that I have selected "Video Game" and NOT "search term", though, I am not exactly sure how Google judges the popularity of a video game. Maybe Google lies and uses search data anyways! \_()_/ (If that's how you shrug your shoulders on the web...... I don't know.....
I don't know if this is accurate though, because the chart TheMasterCaver put here completely shows that the Java edition is getting more and more popular over time.
I can confirm that communities are dying.
And although the statistics show that minecraft is increasing, the actual community is dying.

Vech's Super Hostile series is dead as well.

And Mineplex is slowly dying because of all the hackers.

And based on those statistics, time is growing. I mean this in player wise.
But do the statistics really show how minecraft is doing now?
Of course, you say. They're statistics.
But think about this.
How many copies of Call of Duty: Black Ops 3 have (or any other game in the world that's a year old). Let's say Black Ops 3 has sold 30 million copies. That doesn't mean that there are 30 million people playing.
So the statistics aren't reliable as to say how many people are online at a time.
In conclusion, I think minecraft is old. I mean that literally. The old days were the best days. But the people who played it back then have grown up.
I know this is a weird example and only people who played MCPVP the soup servers will understand this reference.
Leafy used to play minecraft.
Yup. That rude guy on YouTube who makes fun of kids used to play mcpvp.com. He was funny and good too. Now he's grown up and doesn't play anymore and cringes at Minecraft.

I know minecraft isn't dying in population.

Google Trends is about the worst metric there is; consider the following:
Most of the sales for Tetris have been for smartphones - a very recent phenomenon; it has actually sold less copies than Minecraft if you exclude mobile sales (for both games):
The best-selling video game of all-time is Tetris, a tile-matching puzzle video game designed and programmed by Alexey Pajitnov. Originally released in the Soviet Union in 1984 for the Electronika 60, it was later popularised upon its release for the Game Boy in 1989.[1] The game has been ported to a wide range of platforms and sold in excess of 495 million units, 425 million of which are paid downloads on mobile phones.
Excluding mobile sales, the best-selling video game of all-time is Wii Sports with 82.81 million units sold,[5] followed by Minecraft with under 82 million units (excluding over 40 million mobile downloads),[6] while Tetris is the fourth best-selling with sales of 70 million units.
Just for kicks I looked up "google" to see how it has changed in popularity:
If people are using Google less that may be skewing their results.
Also, the chart I posted before does not indicate that popularity is necessarily increasing since it shows cumulative sales - the rate of sales would be more significant - and that has increased overall with little change for PC - in the 9 months between June 2016 and February 2017 22 million copies were sold - about 29 million per year - well in excess of the ~8 year average (PC has sold about 6.37 million copies in the past two years, which is very close to the long-term average; it still strikes me how steady it has been, since many games see a surge in sales at launch followed by a sharp decline). More importantly, the number of active users has increased a lot recently, to 55 million - nearly half of all the people who have ever bought the game are still playing it - actually, more, since many have bought more than one copy.
Ok, i made this account SPECIFACALLY to reply to this thread. Google trends i willl agree to end dweller's last comment on the first page. People are simply learning more and more about minecraft and/or just not looking anything up, or even not using google. However, i do think minecraft is dying... atleeast PE. I have notice several reviewers saying "1.0 screwed up MCPE" or something like that... and i agree. those people who are mad would logically not bye the pc/console version of a game they are fustrated about now, would they. in my opinion the PC edition may not rule in stats, but the game is AMAZING when compared to the PE... What i'm trying to say is, i actually think minecraft is beginning to die ever since 1.0 for MCPE... with "in-game currency" MANY fans left the game and likely won't come back. (either to PE or in minecraft in general) I have abandoned MCPE and console... i mean, what's the point of paying like 10 dollars more/less to downgrade world sizes, customizations, and possibilities of action? (buying console over PC) and even the PC edition i am starting to leave.I mean, after you beat the dragon, got all the achievments, and built a bunch of pointless junk then what's the point of still playing? Even though i think it's dying overall, there is still only one reason i can think of why minecraft isn't dying: People who already have the game usally aren't going to buy much more than 1 version on every platform. to sum it up, i feel like MCPE and console are almost ripoffs, because on the mobile edition there are so many in app purchases for things you could easily get for free on PC. And, what's the point of making a game that is less powerful on console over PC, when average PC setups are about the size (if not bigger than) of console setups? So what i think will happen is PE has already started it's death in my opinion, it will eventually die out, same with console, and then PC will be left as the only platform you can play minecraft on, and even it to should start to die buy about 2019/2020.
EDIT:If you go on http://minecraft-mp.com/type/pve/ right now there are 285 people on the top server (at 2:40 P.M, NY time) in reply to the original poster
In a couple more months things will change drastically and even you will have a different view of those "ripoffs". Posts like yours will be an interesting read a year from now.
I think Minecraft is in a "meh" state right now due to the increase in hackers, but it doesn't mean the game isn't any more popular. Plus, the only thing people find fun in Minecraft anymore is PvP, but I like cooperative survival and such. It's sad, really.
I completely disagree. Of course minecraft has gone down a little in popularity, but all games do. A game that has been around for as long as minecraft has is bound to go down. But that being said minecraft is still very very popular. For example for those of you who play hypixel, when bedwars was a prototype game there were at least 15,000 people playing in the middle of the day. The are also thousands of people playing mineplex and many other servers. Then there's realms and single player. On another hand there is all kinds of different maps to play. Survival maps, adventure maps, horror maps, puzzle maps, etc. Minecraft is a game where the sky is the limit. The possibilities are endless. You can do whatever you want, build whatever you want, play with whoever you want. Minecraft is not dying. With new updates every few months i'm pretty sure minecraft will go on for a very long time.
I think rather than declining smaller servers are being absorbed by larger ones. This is largely do to YouTubers like PrestonPlayz, who's almost every video is on Hypixel, In turn his viewers then go play on Hypixel. I also think Minecraft is moving more towards the pvpers, practice and HCF servers like VeltPvP are exploding with usually a thousand plus players. So If you want to grow your server you need to get good YouTubers to play on it, ones with at least a 100k subs. I do not think that shall be easy.

Since my last posts on this thread the game has only exploded in popularity with more copies sold per month and more active players than ever - representing over half of all copies ever sold in fact, and a far greater percentage of sales than a year or two ago (in other words, many players have returned to the game):
Not ones to be outdone, Mojang and Microsoft have revealed that sales of Minecraft have reached a staggering 144 million across all platforms, with a hugely impressive retention of 74 million active monthly players.
The news comes just weeks after PUBG eclipsed the total PC sales of Minecraft. Despite this, Minecraft’s success still shows no signs of slowing. The last official figure we heard was 122 million copies sold as of February 2017, meaning an average of 2 million copies of Minecraft sold every month. This compares to 1.7 million per month the prior year. Far from Minecraft’s success waning, there's actually a growth in the rate of sales.
As of right now, one in every 50 on the planet own a copy of Minecraft.
Other games may make headlines over the number of sales they make within a short period of time but fast forward a few months and you hardly hear about them anymore but Minecraft is not that sort of game (this goes to PC/Java as well, which has continued to steadily sell copies, even if not at the accelerating rate or volume of other platforms, which has been the case since 2012).
Title says it all.

TheMasterCaver's First World - possibly the most caved-out world in Minecraft history - includes world download.
TheMasterCaver's World - my own version of Minecraft largely based on my views of how the game should have evolved since 1.6.4.
Why do I still play in 1.6.4?
