A comment I made on a video that I think totally sums this up, the video seemed to bash Mojang and the new updates. Here it is.
his video is the result of people who don't understand how free market
business related things work. The whole entire Minecraft coin
investments also if im correct give coins to the people who
created the content that is being bought, therefore, Microsoft gets it
easy, and the players get the content they like and the content makers
get coins for it? That's a win win, yes it may be taking advantage of
younger players who don't know how all this works but at the same time
its making it easier for them. I don't watch your channel but I'm
assuming you are a java player who wants to hold on to java and not
allow it to expand and grow into other versions so players like me can
play with other friends online. I only play on the xbox 360 and I look
forward to this, something greedy pc players won't understand.
If people really don't like it then they won't buy it and Minecraft will
have to fix itself. This whole video speaks from the disgusting
perspective that the pc version is the only version, though it may be
the roots of the game I'm sure Notch the original maker of the game
would want this to expand and grow, pc is only one version of Minecraft
and the only people mad about this is the pc players because they don't
want to allow other people to share the fun on their own versions at the
price of all versions being the same?
The original sandbox game is still out there but people who cant play
the game without activating creative mode all the time, which frankly
seems like a large part of the community, will never have fun with
vanilla survival like it used to be, because all those commands and mods
are at the tip of their fingers and they want those more then they want
vanilla survival so they give in and then complain about the old days
of Minecraft being forgotten. What a joke, more money helps the game out
and they wont be getting this money if people don't enjoy the game
enough to buy it. People who speak out against this should feel ashamed
and allow Minecraft to expand, please guys, stop putting pressure on
Mojang and the community, lets all just have fun and go with the updates
even if it doesn't fully please us.

Ok, Microsoft will ruin Minecraft? Again its obvious you are speaking from a pc perspective, and cross compatibility in terms of OS's isn't as big as a thing when looking at all the versions that MC runs on such as consoles and more. Also free market is more of an economical term rather then a political term, the free market is the one thing that allowed Notch to code the game and get loads of $$$$$ off it in the first place. The subject of 'more money' is also discussing what Mojang does with the money they got from people WHO LIKE THE GAME ENOUGH to buy it in the first place, again free market at work here, if people dont like the game then bye bye MC and the people spend money on other things because its their money and that's how free market works. And I'm also convinced that Microsoft's one billion page terms of service list would cover any cans of worms, if that is a reason why the coin system wouldn't work then lots of scammy things would have died out long ago. Seems like whenever this subject is brought up no one addresses the fact that the player base making content also gets rewards from player bases buying their player base content, people buy what they want and in return the makers get what they want.
I suppose that one of my problems with all this is they might have to simplify the game to a stone age level if they really want to even make this compatible with mobile/tablet users. But I am also convinced that console players will be able to play mods and so forth anyway, how else would DLC work?

Simply, if they rename minecraft I wouldn't care one bit. I don't even look at the name in the first place so it's fine. I have a hard time believing this will effect the game in anyway. It's not going anywhere. As for minecoin, so what? People getting paid for their content? Ohnoes. The only thing is people who no longer make "java version" mods unless they get paid (psst you can already do that its called patreon). So no more mod updates? Okey dokey. Not a likely risk but it doesn't bother me either.
If java version does "end" you can still play it with mods. So put on your burlap cloak and play with and improve what you will be left with. It doesn't have to be a bad time.
Neither is compatible with the other, and they grow more different from each other almost daily.
Each edition has their own advantages and disadvantages, and each has their own set of features (some in common, some much different). Neither side will convince the other- the individual players will end up choosing for themselves which edition is "best" for them.
Lehjr is right on this point- it's just a game.
I don't think a lot of people realize that BTU is just the beginning. You may not recognize either edition a year from now!
If mojang abandons the "java version" it will most certainly fall into other hands (which can be its own can of worms either way).
@ Geneo
I was certainly not convinced by a certain screed that brought me here, but both sides have strong cases. If they must absolutely have the mobile / console versions above the "java version" I would hope they keep it around for people to play and take the authentication servers out of the equation, handling player names, skins, and what not in a different way. Whether or not they update it after this point is entirely their case.
Let's be honest. I never expected an official update to have more than vanity additions or nerfs anyway. I think the best thing we got recently was the observer which has been kind of useful alongside certain mods. Second fo llamas of course.
"Free market" is a Libertarian buzz word reduced from its origins in economics, and is touted by them with near religious fervor, essentially the cornerstone of their "faith", with an analogy of every situation boiling down to supply and demand, without the need for safety measures, or controls, without factoring in marketing and fraud, without factoring in human nature, and without the acknowledgment that life is more complex than that. The "free market" is not the "be all, end all" way of the world. There are plenty of companies that made their money through nefarious means, like copying other games, then giving minuscule chunks of money away to charity just for the sake of PR, companies like Zynga for example. Other examples include the many misdeeds of Microsoft, a company that made its money through imitating and litigating rather than innovating.
The thing that allowed Notch to make anything off of the game in the first place was Java and LWJGL, a free library that handles sound, input, windowing, and rendering, and maintained by someone else. It is also the source of some of the woes of the game, since Mojang is still using a version that supports Windows 95 rather than the newer version which supports Vulcan. The creators and maintainers of the library could have charged for it's usage, but they didn't. The success of the game is because of the people that bought the Java version, if not for them, the game would not have gotten as far as it did. So maybe instead of bashing them for not wanting to lose what they already have, maybe you should recognize that the version you are so adamant to cling to is a watered down version of the original, and the version you are clinging to is a version planned to be so heavily commercialized that you won't recognize it when it happens.
Terms of service mean nothing to a 5 year old barely in school, and mean nothing if the credit card is kept on file. There are years worth of examples of this having gone wrong already.
Again, the XBox version you are clinging to is already a watered down version of the original. Mods in the PC version are complex innovations that often change the entire dynamic of the game, adding more ores and ore processing, infrastructure, logistics, exploration, weapons, armor, tools, even complete biomes. The "unified version" will give you maps and texture packs, and incredibly simple items, like a recolored sword.
In the end, it is just a game, and when Microsoft gets done, it will be less than that. So be careful what you wish for, you just might get it.
Ehh, do I have to make the same argument for the free library? Also my xbox edition is currently closer to pc in my opinion then ever, it's hardly watered down. I also have a problem with you uplifting the pc version with the mods you can download. We are talking about vanilla here, those mods may not be tampered with one bit when the new game comes out. I am also convinced that
a billion dollar company wouldn't be silly enough to run into legal issues with 5 year olds and mommy's debit. These guys know there stuff
And lastly I have to again argue with your case against free market, when you say 'nefarious means' you are just referring to competitive businesses and felony, one government, which steals money from people and does whatever they want, its literally the biggest criminal origination in the world that supports what they want or other businesses sided with them because they get loads of cash, yet they are still in debt. And the other thing, is competitive companies, if people don't want their games copied maybe they should put a patent on them and take it to court, other then that two cooperation's competing in a business field is normal. You need to understand that so many things are a result of free market, the only things I can think of that are not are government funded things.
I don't totally support this update, for example my xbox 360 wont be getting it, that's no fun, I think its a way for Microsoft to sell more xbox 1's because conveniently that is one of the things that will be updated. I also think the transition wont be ok as old worlds will no longer be updated.

"The old console edition (360 and presumably the ps3) will not be available for new purchase after the full release of Minecraft on Xbox One and Switch. Existing owners will still be able to access and play the old console version and minigames, but those versions will not receive updates after the official release of Minecraft."
I have removed the whole off-topic discussion. This thread is for discussing the announcement from Mojang about the "Better Together" update and specifically how it relates to the Java version of Minecraft. Discussions about Minecraft on other platforms and how they will be affected by the "Better Together" update should be posted in their respective discussion forums and not in this forum section or thread.
The original OP's post was about the "implied" name change. That's the only thing that's changing to the java edition. Same game, same "free" stuff (like mods, etc.), same servers, still gonna be updated, not going away anytime soon. Their "community" will still be around. Basically nothing changes! (Or is that the problem?) What happens to Win10 (and the other BTU editions) doesn't effect the java people at all.
So?
If anything, the BTU people should be upset. It's their edition(s) that's being combined, getting a major overhaul, and fundamentally changing how MC looks and works. Not to mention the old consoles won't be sold or updated anymore (haven't heard about ps4, they may be "on their own"). Lots of big changes other than just a inconsequential name change. In essence, it's our editions that's going away, not the java edition.
So?
(Personally, "Bring it on! What took you so long?")
Mojang has given the java-lovers nothing but positive responses. If some members of the community prefer to "read between the lines" and look at it in a negative way, I can't help that.
As to what it means or an direction the game will go in, it means there will be 2 games (not one). One is the "old" MC, one is the "new" MC. Players can choose which one they want....or choose them both. I don't see that as a problem....
Then there's the authentication servers which are not just needed to log into a legitimate client but also needed for players to be able to log in with their own unique characters so that their items they left with are still in their inventory, and that their customized skin is visible to other players, otherwise everyone is just the same vanilla 1 of 2 characters...
You can legally bypass authentication servers in order to keep playing singleplayer games that you paid for:
Museums can now legally jailbreak game consoles, and you can crack abandoned games
The other DMCA exemption has wider appeal. You are now permitted to bypass the lame DRM protection scheme on a single player game in the event the publisher shuts down necessary DRM servers. For example, Diablo 3 has an online DRM server that you have to authenticate with even if you just want to play the single player game. Under the new rules, you could legally crack Diablo 3’s DRM when and if Blizzard shuts down that server. These rules don’t extend to running online servers for discontinued games. So, there’s no way to archive an MMO yet. However, the EFF will get another chance to expand DMCA exemptions in three years.
In fact, you don't even need to crack the game; Mod Coder Pack already bypasses the need to login (the game itself does not even need a login; the launcher is what logs you in, then passes a session ID to the game. Demo mode is set with a command-line argument, which MCP does not use). Even more fun, 1.6.4 and older versions don't even get a session ID from the current launcher, yet I've had no problems whatsoever playing 1.6.4; this is only an issue if you try to play multiplayer:
Also, you do not lose your inventory if your name changes, at least in 1.6.4; MCP defaults to a random name from Player0 to Player999 and I've never lost my inventory when opening the same world more than once (with a different name); the only issue I ever had was having to use NBTExplorer to change the "owner" tags of animals I'd tamed so they would recognize me when I changed my username (this is why they started using UUIDs. Statistics would also be reset but you can simply rename the stats file). It is also a simple matter of using a resource pack to replace the default skin with your own, which I already did so when the skin servers go down I still have my skin (I actually replaced the file inside the jar since I was modding it anyway), and you already have to do this for 1.3 and earlier versions since they changed the URL of the skin servers and it is hard-coded into the game (I've seen mods that fix this).
At the least, the launcher lets you play offline, including when it can't contact the authentications servers; just be sure to keep a backup of the game files (I never log off; the last time I logged in was when I got a new computer over a year ago).
Of course, all of this only lets you play singleplayer but I could not care less about the inability to play multiplayer, which is only around half of the playerbase so the game would keep going for a while (it is still illegal to distribute the game unless it was made open-source, so it will gradually die out even if some people distribute it).

The forum staff do not work for Mojang or Microsoft nor do we represent them in any way. Since we do not read every post of every thread, sometimes off-topic discussions may carry on for a while until someone reports them or we finally discover them.
When you rename original to an obscure name while renaming the newer incarnation to match that of the original, it suggests intent of replacement. No, it's not explicitly saying as much, but it's about as straight forward of a hint you can get without explicitly saying so.from Microsoft.
There you go, jumping to conclusions again. All the other editions have had "obscure names" for years, and we've never felt like we were only "temporary", we've never felt slighted (though we do get tired of the java people talking down to us), and we've never complained about our name. We just assumed, and rightly so, that the naming convention was so everyone knew which edition we were talking about.
That said, every game evolves. grows up, and the developers come up with newer, bigger, better, sequels. Look at the Civ, Halo, GTA, Madden, etc., series. Do a handful of hardcore people still play the original Civilization? Of course. But the vast majority of gamers simply don't want to anymore and have moved on.
You may not think so now, but you'll be thinking differently about java MC in a year or two. It's not Mojang's intention that the java version will fade away from lack of players, it will be because most players won't want to play it anymore. The ole "That's the way we've always done it" mentality only hastens obscurity.
Yep, I have faith that Mojang/MS will make MC into something good enough to play by itself that it doesn't need any "mods" to make it worth playing.
And that's the crux if it, isn't it? That it really doesn't matter if the java edition goes away or not- what matters to some people is that if their mods will go away.
After some thought, and debate with myself, I think developers do deserve money for their works. But not like this. Is it kosher to use patreon to receive money for your mods?
Really, only time will tell the full outcome of this. Microsoft had earned my trust with Mojang, although this is due in part to the clause preventing them from touching the PC edition.
Thankfully Minecraft is too well-known to "die" in a sense. Granted, if the news ever surfaces that PC development has halted, it's gonna hurt on the inside of one's self for a bit. Several people may leave the game, others will stay and create mods. Although if such an event does happen, I can assure you a group of hobbyist devs will write their own version, or update it themselves for the community with built-in modding API.
It's very unlikely that they'll ever completely stop developing/updating the PC edition, but no amount of reassurance will put away my quell my suspicions. Again, only time will tell us the true path, and even then it's more than likely going to be a long time, however long it may be.
I think it's also worth mentioning that Microsoft learned a hard lesson about throwing strict PC gamers in with console gamers during the Unreal/Gears of War cross-platform debacle of 2010. This isn't PC elitism, here. We have hard, measurable evidence that PC gamers utterly destroyed consoles gamers there, prompting MS to quickly halt their plans and reinstitute platform-specific boundaries. THis could well be an entrenched internal philosophy at this point that PC gamers and console gamers should be separate realms.
even if Mojang completely discontinues it, making it impossible to download or log in (if you paid for a game it is legal to circumvent that,
That's actually false. When Blizzard shut down Nostalrius they made that abundantly clear.
This goes out to all of you: java edition, console edition, and pocket edition players alike:
Don't be so sure they can't take your game away from you. I wouldn't mind having a final version of Minecraft, but I'm skeptical it'll be that simple. I get the feeling Microsoft is trying to take our toys away because we've stopped paying for them. They don't want us to keep playing for free. That's why they're trying to hand us Windows 10 edition "for free", to wrench us into their scheme which will eventually be a drive to squeeze as much money out of us as possible.
I am 33 years old and Microsoft has been doing this same stuff since I was a little kid. They've broken the law and occasionally been tried for it, and kept right on plowing ahead like nothing happened. Microsoft is not your friend. Microsoft is not to be trusted. Never make the erroneous assumption that Microsoft has the interests of the players in mind. Always make sure you demand the best from Microsoft. Ultimately it is the customers who control the business, and we need to use that control for our benefit. Whenever we lose sight of that, Microsoft will use divisive tactics to fool us into thinking we'll get what we want if we just pay a little more before we get it...no deal! Never assume it'll get better. Demand the best before you pay for it, and also stop pirating the good stuff you can afford to buy. Use your money to talk, spend it wisely and that's what will make this turn out well for everyone.

Even more fun, 1.6.4 and older versions don't even get a session ID from the current launcher, yet I've had no problems whatsoever playing 1.6.4; this is only an issue if you try to play multiplayer:
MCL-7282 Minecraft Launcher fails to pass Session ID to pre 1.7.2 Minecraft clients
TheMasterCaver's First World - possibly the most caved-out world in Minecraft history - includes world download.
TheMasterCaver's World - my own version of Minecraft largely based on my views of how the game should have evolved since 1.6.4.
Why do I still play in 1.6.4?
We both recognized that it was off topic and continued with our discussion, either that was a moderator fail or you didn't interpret the posts correctly, please represent Mojang better.
Well I don't know how to insert image sources, so looks like this is just a boring old signature...
Roughly 95% of Minecraft players hate Villagers and would be very
happy if they were removed. If you are one of the 5% who actually like
villagers, copy this into your signature.-RainbowGirl
The forum staff do not work for Mojang or Microsoft nor do we represent them in any way. Since we do not read every post of every thread, sometimes off-topic discussions may carry on for a while until someone reports them or we finally discover them.

I liked the idea of marketplace, but I did not like the idea of paying for maps and skins.
I am a minecraft lover to the core, I just started youtube, maybe check my channel out.

After some thought, and debate with myself, I think developers do deserve money for their works. But not like this. Is it kosher to use patreon to receive money for your mods?
Of course if I make my mod it will be free.
I'm finally back. See profile for details.
Figured it was time for a change.
I want
ocean content(thanks Möjang!),nether biomes(again thanks!!), and savanna passive mobs (meerkats incoming!?).
