Reading this and the comment here makes me consider not looking for a server at all, and instead accept the dying and dead ones on the 360 in which I used to play.
a friend of mine a couple years ago started a private modded server (we recently updated to 1.11.2) because of things like these, i myself dont have much experience with servers (i dont mind single player really) but from my experience whats always put me off is the massive hubs with a giant wall of text blocking me from seeing sweet f all. ive never played any minegames, but i have watched a couple on youtube and they kinda looked like fun. the server we have now is great. you spawn in a simple desert village thats been spruced up a bit, theres 4 roads (one in each direction) if you wanna live in the village live there, if you wanna live somewhere else walk there, or use the waystone to teleport to one of half a dozen locations and walk from there. we allow PvP, we allow greifing (one time i built a house on the side of a mountain and a mate built his house looming over mine blocking all my light (cheeky sod) you wanna burn someones house down? do it, you wanna steal all their resources? do it. but none of this really happens and why? cause we dont let the kids in. as it stands our server is simply half a dozen mates all playing single player together spread across the world, i like it this way, its why we keep it private. we are all friends in RL long before minecraft became a thing, maybe thats why it works so well
The best idea, I think, is to seek like-minded individuals of character who enjoy Minecraft, and play with them. I maintain a whitelist server and only those people I trust are on it, such as my wife, my sister, my stepson, several dear friends I met playing Minecraft, one of my friend's father so they can play together, and that's about it. We *could* all play on Realms, and switching to Realms is my backup plan should something happen with my current provider.
Ideally, you can find a group like *THAT* and enjoy your time playing with THEM. Realms makes it a snap. Or if you prefer a modded game, there are quite a few providers who will help you to various degrees with setting up and maintaining a small server just for that purpose.
Dare to be different. If you can't find a server where you are comfortable playing, create one for the friends you trust and give them a place to call home.
A. not everyone knows how to use command blocks. and what about severs w/o command blocks enabled?
B. plugin (mod) means non-vanilla, therefore NOT a solution.

I know that maybe you disliked the new 1.9 combat. But making it a gamerule is quite stupid and will never happen as it is require a lot of mechanic tweaks and balancing.

Yep, that's what we have going on with ours as well! Although I do think our hub is pretty fancy, one of our players is a wonderful builder and she did a great job.

No, it really doesn't. If you knew how it actually works you would agree.

Okay i have to admit, i am not an expert in programming. What i want to say is that making a gamerule is just plain out dumb, no offence.
You can modify attributes, oh wait? you didn't know how to use command block. But, aren't making it a gamerule is the same as using a command?
And there are also flaws on making it a gamerule:
1. When mojang added features that somehow effect combat. They have to consider on somehow balance it for 2 of the combat modes.
2. Mojang have to balances out the current existing feature like armor value and damage and such to fit both combat system.
3. Mojang have to fix BOTH of the mechanic if one of them has a bug, which means double their work.
4. Inconsistency, why only applied this gamerule on combat. How about hunger, i miss the good alpha day where food heals hp and no hunger bar. Ooh, why not the old bow mechanic where you can use it like a machine gun, the old one is the good one! How about old creeper mechanic, where they explode when they die! Why does Mojang doesn't add these gamerule when they add the old combat gamerule, are they trolling us?
This is the last reply, i don't want to go to detail about 1.9 combat because it can mislead from the topic of this thread.

I ONLY said the attack cooldown mechanic. Also, almost everyone can /gamerule keepInventory or the like, but only a small portion of those people know how to use command blocks.
That's 2015 - 2017 minecraft servers for you, as server hosting became cheaper and as plugins for things like GTA, skyblock, etc became free on the internet, everyones son, everyones uncle, everyones dog could just buy a server and host it. But the problem with that is all of those servers have minimalist populations and are usually very poorly run.
So yea, I agree - servers are all the same, even Mineplex, Hypixel and the other minigame servers all have atleast 75% of their minigames shared between them. Only a few are original (and those are usually the poorly thought out ones or abandoned ones).
Just as Sonicwave said, communities on large servers are toxic, but ones on small servers have just immature communities unless it's more of a "server for friends"

If i am helpful, why not give me a thanks? THANKS! <--- Get it?
Really? The updates aren't even that exciting anymore.
I concur, we've gotten colored concrete, birds that do nothing but die to chocolate, and an update that solely works on Win10/Pocket/consoles. But that's just my opinion.

A server for WORTHY friends is pretty cool. MC Realms makes it possible for those who are not technically inclined, while Spigot really is NOT a big deal at all... the community on spigotmc.org is fantastic for helping people with an interest in getting started. And there are good hosting services.
If the servers you come across suck, the best thing to do is start your own and buck the trend. Take what you've learned, figure out how to DON'T DO THAT, and... DON'T DO THAT. Do the cool stuff instead. I'm using Hermitcraft as a model for what I wish to do, including starting with a map wipe on March 31st of every year. Everyone knows the date, they can plan around it, and until then we just deal with what's there until the coming map wipe. But there are many other LET'S PLAY (LP) videos of servers that could also provide some cool ideas. I just figure bigger really isn't better, and I'm much better off enjoying my time with people I know and trust.

I've seen nothing wrong with the updates. Minecraft sales are still increasing and the feature aren't really that bad. Thought this may be irrelevant.
Really? The updates aren't even that exciting anymore.
I'm still waiting for the update that adds a gamerule to turn off the attack cooldown feature.

Irrelevant if I was sharing a reason why I think Minecraft servers (And the game as well) are monotonous and dull and why I don't play them anymore?

>Glazed Terracotta, Elytra, Shulker Boxes, Colored Beds. I think all of those are "exciting". Thought, it is my opinion.

There's many ways to toggle the attack cooldown:
a. use command block.
b. install the 1.8 attack plugin.

B. plugin (mod) means non-vanilla, therefore NOT a solution.

I agree with all this for the most part.
I own a server and I just rethought my life choices
Im trying to find a server with a unique take on factions. So if anyone has any ideas please pm me.
