Isn't it only for creative mode? In survival mode you still need to craft it, creative mode, they just basically make it easier for you, at least for my minecraft.
There used to be a life hack with the mod Not Enough Items where you could look up the recipe for a clock or a compass and the icon would function just like a crafted one. I'm not sure if this still exists or not with the new 1.10 port.
That's been that way with every version of vanilla minecraft since compasses were introduced. The compass icon always points to spawn, even if you haven't actually crafted it yet.
Prior to 1.7 you could even look at your statistics, which were global back then, if you ever crafted a compass in any other world and it would indicate the right direction (you still can as long as it was in the same world).
That said, I can't even remember the last time I actually used a compass, not counting making maps, which I always use when away from my base, which has always been right at spawn and I do not go very far from it until then (not because of the need for a map, I don't explore until I search for a stronghold, and later, caving). I don't have much trouble remembering where my base is anyway, and when I make secondary bases away from spawn compasses obviously aren't useful at all; these bases are connected to my main base with railways so there are established paths between them. I've also never been interested in finding the exact world spawn point since I've never used spawn chunks for anything, plus you don't need to be that accurate unless you need as much space as possible.
I haven't really used the recipe book yet, but when making a texture pack I was messing around with it to look at the different textures
When I noticed that the icon for the first tab of the recipe book, even if you have no recipes, is the compass.
It's fully functional and available from the very start of the game.
Other than the fact you can have the compass in your inventory so you can check it while you move. Doesn't really seem necessary to make the compass
Nicely spotted, hopefully Mojang changes this before the update is released. To be honest the compass needs a bit of a rework anyway.

No, the recipe book is in survival mode
You still need to craft a compass to make maps...
I believe he's talking about the compass on its own, not as a crafting component.

TheMasterCaver's First World - possibly the most caved-out world in Minecraft history - includes world download.
TheMasterCaver's World - my own version of Minecraft largely based on my views of how the game should have evolved since 1.6.4.
Why do I still play in 1.6.4?
/gamemode s or c or a then get the compass put it in your ender chest, get back to survival mode
craft your map anvil?
