For reasons, I built a 'technical' Village on top of the Nether, where I have a Pigmen Grinder right next to it. (Or grinder with no pigmen. :/ ) I was going for a kinda, 2 in 1 special, Iron and Gold. The 2 farms aren't touching, or within each other by any means, just right next to each other. And no matter how valid I've made the spawning platform (for pigmen), doesn't seem to want to work. I made sure the platform was a solid block (netherrack), light doesn't effect their spawn, there is no roof - just one platform - so it's obviously 2 blocks high, plenty of spawning space, not even close to 'max building height'. Even put difficulty on hard, and stood max amount of distance for them to spawn, but close enough so they don't de-spawn. Unless something changed... (Which something always does with this game. :/ ) The only other thing I can think of is the boundary of the 'Village' I created, interfering with the spawns, or issues of Pigmen spawning while the village is in the same chunk as the Grinder... something like that. So my question is, do hostiles spawn inside village boundaries in general? If not, any other help would be appreciated...
Im sure a moderator will move this to the correct forum....
but in attempt to help, my first thought is that your hitting the entity cap? if your village farm is working, you have entities loaded already which do not despawn, and as such with the 2 setups in close proximity your hitting the cap (this is a pure guess, in a single player world this shouldnt be an issue but on a server they have entity caps which would limit the amount of entities spawned)
As a little test (to ensure pigmen can spawn above the nether) move far away (with the setups unloaded) and build a small platform, if any pigmen spawn on that then its a high possibility that your issue is being causes by the amount of mobs in close proximity.
This is just my own guess, someone might throw a better solution to this...

I already moved this thread... And also, I am in Single Player. I even tried opening a LAN to see if that would change anything. (It didn't.) And those two farms aren't the only farms up ontop of the Nether, which I was forced to do, cuz of the little space I had in the main Overworld. It's a custom map. :/ But to the point. Pigmen spawn right on the tops of the trees, and the giant mushrooms like any other mob in the Overworld, which happens to be right next to the Village as well. Which means they 'CAN' spawn in that proximity, they just don't do it where I want them. Kinda like the game is just like "Uhhh you. This contraption worked in the past? Oh well, we're just gonna make it Not work. There ya go." Lol. Thank you for the idea tho, I guess I'll try it, if it works, I'll be kinda bummed out, cuz it took forever to build that thing. And it is times like when this happens that I take major long breaks from this game, just cuz of how easy it is to get bummed out. Lol
And there shouldn't be any flaw to this contraption. None that I know of, other than something new that conflicts with it that i didn't know of. It's simple cuz I don't go out of my way to build these things, as long as they just 'work'... And it's a dumbed down version of the ones you see on Youtube, but it's an exact replica of one I built in the past. (Which worked very well back then, but doesn't now.) So anything that is wrong, can't be the contraption itself. :/
How far up did you build it, or more accurately how high up are you when you AFK there? If you are too close to the bedrock, mobs can spawn under the bedrock in the normal part of the nether.

Original AFK spot was 24 blocks below, but then realized that. So I built 24 (at least) above, gave or took a few just to test around with it. Still didn't work. The Platform is 29 blocks up from Bedrock level, and I built the AFK spot an additional 24 blocks above that. The model of the Grinder is... Well 1, to get them to spawn, and 2, agro them, so they fall to their death via trap doors. :/
This could be your issue. When this farm design worked in a previous version, was it on this custom map or vanilla (or a different map)? All I can think of is the map creator has somehow limited/removed spawning above the nether ceiling.

No, the original grinder was on another, older, vanilla, and also (deleted) map. And Pigmen do spawn above the Nether, I've seen it. They don't for some reason spawn on the bedrock itself. But any other blocks like 'tree-tops', 'mushroom-tops', and even the Iron grinder platform 'rarely' if I'm so-so distance away. (All of which are above the Nether roof) I've actually kinda been considering changing the spawning platform to Mushroom blocks to maybe sort of cheat the system. xD
Yeah... Something just occured to me upon you mentioning that. I do remember last time I built mine very high, but this time I thought it unnecessary. (Waste of time and resources) But now, I do recall my previous one being fairly tall. And my previous one spawned loads more than that, enough to fill the entire platform to the crowded point. To the point where, I didn't even need to AFK, I could just enter Nether, climb to the top, and they would have all spawned back again ready for round 2. Aside from that, I've seen mobs de-spawn before right in front of me, that's an exageration, but well-closer than 128 blocks. Between 32 and 128 they have a 'slight' chance of de-spawning. But I've seen them de-spawn way more often at that closer distance for it to seem like a 'slight' chance. But I guess rules are not the same with Pigmen, seeing as you're like what, almost 50 blocks away? (For AFK spot) But what occured to me was, I never thought the game would still register all other Pigmen. Considering the portal spawned like at the bottom of the Nether, and I created a minecart tunnel all the way to the top, that's how far away the grinder is. But I guess to get max results... I need to build way higher out of range of anything and everything is the way to go, I guess. :/
On a side note: Instead of re-doing and rebuilding the entire thing, maybe it's as simple as putting my render distance all the way down to unload the chunks and mobs... I wonder.
The Platform is 29 blocks up from Bedrock level, and I built the AFK spot an additional 24 blocks above that.
29 plus 24 is 53. 53 + 128 (the y level of the bedrock ceiling you're building the farm on) is 181. All of the nether below the bedrock that's within 128 blocks of you while on your AFK platform is still in spawning range; going straight down from the block you're standing on, that means all the way down to y=53, or 75 blocks below the bedrock.
Thinking back to when I use to make pigmen grinders above the nether, I always use to start at height 200 for the grinder....
So i did the following:
(spawn platform specs = 20 x 20 netherack)
started at height 157 since your platform was 29 blocks above nether bedrock
Spawn platform at height 157 - afk platform height 170 - NO SPAWNS.
Spawn platform at height 157 - afk platform height 180 - small amounts of spawns (2-4 pigmen)
Spawn platform at height 157 - afk platform height 190 - small amounts of spawns (2-6 pigmen)
Spawn platform at height 157 - afk platform height 200 - masses of spawns (8-12 pigmen)
Edit: after some deep thought... I just remembered a fact.... mobs will only despawn when your 128 blocks away from them... meaning when you "enter" the nether, your loading up a lot of pigmen, and then when you go above it, every pigman that is within 128 blocks of you is still loaded, and this impacts your spawn rate significantly. This was the old reason I use to start building at height 200 and upwards.. and could be the very reason your grinder is slow/struggling?

I've built a version as high up as possible in Creative. (To the build limit). Minus a couple blocks for the spawn-space. And I went 24 blocks away, 53 blocks away (Up and Down :/ ), and a lil in between each. Still nothing works. Keeping what both of you said, factoring everything in. Something must have changed something, or they changed spawning rules. Trying to eliminate ore-farming from the game, considering it an 'exploit'. The same way they tried to make Iron Farms not possible... Mojang. -.-
But that's the thing with this game. There's too many factors to keep in mind with this game, making it tedious. I've tried up, down, left, and right (figuratively) with this project. I give up. -.- I'm done... with this game. This game has become a joke anyway with everything that's changed / updated, it's lost it's touch I think. Just like 'Runescape' I'm done knocking years off my life with the unbelievable stress this game fills me with when things should work, but just don't. I'm filing for retirement. xD
Sorry for troubling you all, and wasting your time with this. -.-
