Uhhh... well... the purpose was originally a fun project for Marcus to work on in his game creation hobby. Now it's both for fun and for profit. As for what players have it as, that's whatever they make it. For some people it's an old thing that they're bored with (mainly because of what they do on it), but haven't been patient/adventurous enough to try other things yet. I think at that point it's important you either reflect on how you're playing/what you're doing and make your play more worthwhile, take a break, or play less.

Good answer, but it's pretty vague in terms of what YOU think it is. What is your opinion on Minecraft?
Could it be an escape from reality, a place to truly have your own way, and to form the world that you've always imagined?
Or could it be a form of art, bringing a vision to life for others to behold?
Why do you play Minecraft? Could it possibly be just another mindless video game that you use to kill time?
Or... Could it be something more? Something life changing? Something so powerful, it could influence the lives of many others?
What do you think?
The plain and simple answer is the there is no true purpose to the game other than to provide the tools for the player to create their own world. What started off as a simple game of legos became a universe of possibilities that can still amaze to this day. The stories we tell, the worlds we create, the people we meet are what best define this unique game whose limit is in the imagination of the user.
As for the why I play, it is because I can get lost and find something interesting to see or an idea to create. I adore seeing people create maps while others play through them. In addition, it provided me a way to open up to new things. While I'm not the most creative nor the greatest of redstoners, I found enjoyment in digging through caves.
I had taken a long hiatus before now and am only slowly returning to the game, seeing a community that is not the same as when I left. The new blocks and features give me reasons to build and explore and maybe even create a junky cave home instead of the 5x5x5 wooden boxes I usually built.

I did some CraftTweaker scripts for Mystical Agriculture. They fill in a couple of small gaps in MA, and also let you make or duplicate not only vanilla plants, but the blocks, plants and wood from Quark and Biomes O'Plenty. Also spawn eggs for most vanilla mobs! The scripts are here on Github.
The game in and of itself is entirely subjective- it is a truly endless world in which the player can do whatever he wishes.
As for why I play minecraft, I just love messing around with command blocks and noteblocks. I just enjoy working on maps. Why I can never seem to get anything done? I don't know. Sometimes I play survival, but that's only when I'm feeling really good (and it's usually heavily modded)
Minecraft is also an art form in the modern world, one which many can use and relate to; one in which the user has unlimited materials and an equal amount of creativity.
(Via Skype) Greenwindu: I’m the sort of person that does a lot of things at once and only finish a few, but some things work well. Deep Space, our town, Dead Island, Rabakine, all really nice things made among projects that failed, but today I really don’t want to do anything. I’ll put a normal survival map up, or just some really weird poorly made thing to cruelly laugh at.

Minecraft exists to indulge the creativity of the user, if we're disregarding making profit for Mojang.

For me its just a place to chill and model my "life" the way I want. (As in my roleplay life)
