Ok so I played Minecraft ages ago 1.2.5 to be exact and I have written down a seed to an awesome world I had discovered. Using the launcher to select my version (1.2.5), would it still make that world it did back then or would it make a completely different world?
It should work fine. A seed is put there to be a controlling factor in what a world puts where. Basically the "random generation" that decides what goes where is an algorithm. The seed makes the algorithm consistently give certain results (seeds making a specific map). While they do sometimes change it, the way 1.2.5 generation works will always be the way 1.2.5 generation works. So, the seed you're wanting to try out should work as long as you're in the correct version. The best way to see if it will work is to just go and try it for yourself.
Seeds for earlier version would usually produce different worlds on any version later than this..
So your 1.2 seeds 'should' give same world on any version up to 1.6 1.7.2 but could give different world on versions after that version
You MAY be lucky to get a similar world generation.
I tried out a seed I found on both 1.2.5 & 1.11.2 and got similar worlds based on AMIDST program
You could probably create the world in an old version and copy it over in a newer mc version. But as you explore new areas the seed would be used with the newer terrain generation code
The world generator didn't change between PCMCv1.2.5 and v1.6.4 so your 1.2.5 seed will work the same in any version up through v1.6.4.
The world generator changed with PCMCv1.7.2 so if you enter your seed in that or any later version you will get a different world.

yeah I checked it last night and it gave the same results in 1.2, 1.2.1, all the way up to 1.2.5, I'm totally dumbfounded why its not giving me that map tho. maybe the co ordinates were changed or something :/

TL;DR: Yes it should work, go try it.
If the seed worked in 1.2.5, and you are playing version 1.2.5, then yes, it will work.
yeah I went and tried it and I'm pretty sure it didn't work, I will double check some other version too. Thanks guys
If I saw this post earlier I would've said that the world generation was changed (I think) around mc v1.6.
(EDIT: found out it was actually MC 1.7.2 that changed how Seeds were rendered
