It’s time for Mojang to stop with all the updates and leave the future of the game in the hands of the mod community. Mojang had a good run with Minecraft but at this point it getting sad and frustrating. Minecraft has one of the best modding communities ever rivaled only by the original doom and Bethesda.
But while Bethesda and Id eventually finished their projects and went on to make new games Mojang has been continually and needlessly updating Minecraft killing mods in the process. This is bad for the longevity of the game. Imagen if you woke up tomorrow and out of nowhere Morrowind updated and now all the old mods don’t work. Now all the old mod authors have to come back and update their work most wouldn’t even bother. And who could blame them for abandoning the mods it’s not like you get paid and for all they know the game could update again and again locking them in an endless cycle. We even have an example in Skyrim special edition.
When Skyrim special edition was revealed many criticized it as pointless saying all the stuff it does can be done with mods and they were right. Now look at what they have to deal with waiting for all the mod authors to update if they update at all and there always be some mods that will never update because the people who make these mods have lives of their own and don’t intend to make mod forever. If you want to make something new than make a new game or a sequel but don’t go resting on your laurels fracturing your mod community in the process.
In doom I can play mods from 20 years ago and they still work (with a few exceptions) can you say the same for Minecraft. Now that’s not to say the other mod communities are perfect there was a chaotic time for the doom mod scene when various source ports were competing for dominance but that time has passed and things are relatively stable with gzdoom. In fact some of those exceptions I mentioned are getting updated by the fans because everyone knows the community is probably going stay with gzdoom.
But Minecraft has become stall, the updates don’t do it anymore (why do I have still have to install mods for a stupid chair and table after all this time?) but the mods (which do let me have a chair and table) keep getting broken by them. Mojang is hurting its own product and refusing to grow as a company or in this case as a subsidiary of Microsoft. (Also no I’m sick and tired of using stairs as a substitute and I don’t like my tables to click when I get close to them.)
See the version? You can very easily play older versions so you can play with mods made for them - which is a major difference between Minecraft and most other games, which do not give you any (legal) way of playing an older version. Want newer features? People often complain that Mojang is ripping off mods when a new update comes out, and for good reason - because many of the features they add were implemented in a mod at some point (some were in fact directly taken from mods but with permission, such as horses).
Indeed, that's one reason why I still play in 1.6.4 and have not bothered updating for over 3 years now - if I want some new feature I add it myself, while I don't have to worry about features that I do not want. While the ability to mod the game myself gives me an advantage it is easy to install most mods and there are many mods out there, especially for older versions, which even still have mods being actively developed/updated for them.

If I’m smart enough to install mods then obviously I’m smart enough to try older versions and if doing that solved all my problems I would be happy to stick with that version but you people don’t seem to understand what I mean by fracturing the community. All these mods are running on different versions, some will run on the older version some won’t, some only run on the newer version some won’t, some update some don’t etc. not to mention if your favorite mod updates with some new feature then your forced to update too but then your other mods don’t work, it’s just one big mess. Don’t you all see everything is out of sync and nothing will work with anything else because Mojang insist on rewriting the same game over and over again instead of moving on.
Why would you want them to stop updating!?!? They should keep updating until THEY want to stop, not because people want them to, I really love vanilla minecraft, also modded, but if they stop updating then many cool things couldn't be added that they COULD add.
We need originality and real updates. At this point the "Major" updates (1.10, 1.11) are just bugfixes. We need new bosses, a new dimension and some longevity. If we are going to keep getting 1.10s and 1.11s, the OP is right. Just kill the updates. If we however would get new content that adds longevity, hell yeah, add that to the game! The problem currently is that the mod community is split between 1.6, 1.7.10, 1.8, 1.9, 1.10 and 1.11, and nobody wants to play vanilla survival because of no longevity. What we need is either good updates, a gap between them for modders to catch up, or just kill them off completely. Remember 1.4? 1.5? The wither? Redstone! We need major updates again!

Right cool things expect for furniture because obviously that’s way too complicated to add in (even though like a million mods do it). No instead lets update the combat you know the lest interesting part of the game. Also lets add another dimension to the game that’s just another hell dimension but with a different set of colors (because who likes having different themes am I right).
It used to be that Minecraft updates were exciting but lately they’ve just been boring, I can’t remember the last time they added something that truly excited me. Now mods on the other hand are always adding in cool things every other day, as long as you’re playing the right version of the game.
The problem is that Mojang has lost focus on what makes Minecraft so fun the building that allows you to create your own world. I never played Minecraft for the combat or the redstone or farming I played only to create and to create I need materials. That’s why every time an update comes along the only thing I care about are the new textures and models that are added not some gimmicky mechanic like potions or enchanting.
But gimmicks seem to be the only thing the devs care about these days and I’m starved for new building material. That’s why I want mods to take over, stuff like BiblioCraft, Biomes O' Plenty, Custom NPCS gives me the building blocks I need to make even more varied structures and worlds. World creation (and world generation/exploring) are what Minecraft is all about but the players need to be given the building blocks (cubes) that are necessary in order to create.
Mods just prove the MC community is starved for something better.

Mods have "taken over" any real MC development anyway, and many are already "forced" to play older versions, so what difference would it make if Mojang concentrated their efforts on the other editions (that are selling well) and let this old version go?
This has to be the most depressing thread I've read in a very long while. What makes it even worse is that the argument for Minecraft to be EOL'd is actually pretty strong. I really really want to love it, but the fact is that, yeah, the game's had it's run. There isn't much in the way of revolutionary content that could still be added to the game, just look at the last few updates: A new block. a new biome maybe, and a mob or two. Rinse and repeat. After a while that doesn't work anymore.
I think a lot of the problem has to do with the community though. Now that so many editions of the game exist, the community is split between them, and what was originally the dominant version is now split into it's own set of enclaves dictated by mods that either refuse to update past 1.7.10 or don't work on anything before 1.11. With a community that fractured it's hard to have unity, and even though Minecraft is bigger than ever, that split makes it seem like it's dying.
I don't think 'mods taking over' would solve this problem either. You would move from people physically being on different platforms that cannot coexist, to people being on different modpacks that can't coexist. What's the difference? "Hey, let's play some minecraft!" "Oh, I only play on Xbox" ... "Oh, I only play on FTB"
"Man, check out this cool redstone thing I built" "Oh, is that on PC, redstone doesn't work the same on my Xbox..."
"Bro, take a look at this reactor design I made in IC2" ... "IC2? I only use big reactors"
See? It's hard to relate to people if you're coming form different experiences, versions, mods.
Another theme I'm seeing here is people being tired with the game overall. Take a break guys, heck, maybe just stop playing altogether. Minecraft may not have a definite end in the way of a plot, but when it feels like you've done everything in the game you need to put it on a shelf.

It's not Mojang's fault you use mods, and you could just use a older version of Minecraft. (Go to the minecraft launcher and go to edit profile.)
That's one of the downsides of mods- there's not much left for Mojang to do that modders haven't already covered. Modders can do whatever they want, but Mojang can't step on their toes.

This version is selling well. Just because you're sick of it doesn't change the fact that it's still one of the best-selling games on PC. Also, the rumor has it that they're dropping the console editions.

Every time they add something now, it seems like they alienate a portion of the player base. Despite people saying things like "oh, 1.9 won't split the community," it did. We're split between versions; some are playing on 1.6 because of the better caves, others on 1.7 because mods, still others on 1.8 because of 1.9's combat, and then we have 1.9+. You can say "if you don't like x feature, go back to 1.y!" However, that argument means that Mojang is failing to make good quality updates, because later updates had worse features. It also prevents the player from experiencing other features they like; not a terrible thing, but it's certainly annoying to see that one feature you've always wanted, but be kept aback because some other feature that doesn't make the game fun anymore. You can also say "Well, just mod it into your favorite version," which works, but then you have to work with mod conflicts and crashes that are unlikely to ever be fixed, and likely you won't find the feature you want. Plus, a lot of people are just opposed to modding the game.
The game is complete. Many of the features are as fleshed out as they are going to be. In order to add new content that fits in with the game, it tends to just be the easy "mob, structure, item, decorative block" approach, simply because anything revolutionary doesn't fit in with the game or splits the community (like the 1.9 combat).
Personally, I think the solution is to work on a Minecraft 2. That has several advantages over an update, even if it's harder to make:
The game desperately needs a re-write, due to sloppy code and poor optimization, and would work better as a C# title utilizing an optimized rendering engine like DirectX. However, if you're going to basically re-write the entire game, then you might as well make a new one.
They can increase the system requirements a bit, allowing them to make a better quality and better looking game that isn't limited by older hardware. Sure, they'd get complaints, but it's a perfectly reasonable practice in the gaming industry.
They wouldn't be bound by established mechanics. A new game doesn't have to follow the unbreakable rules of "no tiers stronger than diamond," "no crafting grid larger than 3x3," and so on.
A large feeling of newness can return to the game, as the world could look vastly different. It could also have another artistic direction, having more of a unified texture feel, but that's not a requirement.
The game could actually be built with modding in mind, so mods aren't broken every update because "obfuscation."
It provides a monetary return, as people would be expected to buy it.
Overall, though, I don't think Minecraft is going to live and die by the modding community. They help, but it largely depends on how Mojang decides to handle the game. It's selling well, but is it continuing to improve and become a better game? Or is its quality stagnate or even getting worse? Only time will truly tell.

I think it's all a matter of opinion. THAT is my opinion.
I only play 1.9, I never go above this version. I don't want to learn the tactiques.
When 1.11 came out, I updated to 1.9. But usually, I'm still playng 1.8 more than anything else. I hate the fighting system...
What's with all the new combat hate? It was added for a reason. Did you at least try this stuff out? I don't mean to knock someone else's opinion but that's weird reasoning.
I guess mojang should just make one final version, make sure to remove all the other versions from play, and while they are at it, take all the mobs out and put dancing steves back in. Then they can call it quits and go onto something else. Oh, one other thing, take out the combat update and put notch apples back in. Yeah, that's a most good idea!!!!!

I get that you think this argument is silly, but there's no point in mocking the OP without providing any actual feedback. There's some valid points being brought up here.
I don't know. Most of these points feel pretty minimal to me.
Mojang providing content still benefits a lot of people. Some people simply don't like mods believe it or not. They're just too unfitting, too bulky, bland, complicated, etc. to them. New content also benefits servers and map makers. It gives them more things to mess around in and making things vanilla generates a lot more traffic than making things with mods. Heck resource pack makers benefit too since you can't really make resource packs for every mod.
Some people also just don't want mods. Vanilla is great because its pretty instant to set up. Mods... Are a bit more. The easy part is installing forge, but the mod list will get overwhelming quick if you don't know many off the top of your head. Maybe parents are just setting the game up for their kids, perhaps a couple just wants to play a game together for a night. Setting up things towards vanilla is really simple, and with updates, it keeps vanilla players happy because they're part of the community, too.
Overall it'd be a bit selfish, you're leaving out all these people when you stop updating the game and that doesn't even include non-java players. That's right, Pocket edition, Windows 10 edition, Console, etc. They don't have mods. Leaving them out would be very rude considering they already get vanilla updates at an alarmingly slow rate. Of course win10/pocket edition has add ons... But uhm... There's not much to say about them, really. They're not exactly popular and I haven't seen any updates or anyone even talking about them past the initial release date.
Updates for the game help older players and newer players enjoy the game easily. The new content is out because the devs care about the community, and abandoning part of it just because "Mods exist stoppit" is just a slap in the face to those who don't/can't use them for whatever reason. New update benefits everyone from youtubers to children and to even the devs themselves. The devs enjoy making these updates and forcing them to quit would be like having your most favoritest thing in the world taken away.
After all, the modding community has no bad effects when it comes to modding. 1.7.10 has been agreed by almost everyone to be the default/universal modding update due to its popularity. Some devs can update beyond, but that's mostly a choice on them, not fault of the devs. If there's really demand for a new feature mojang added, backporting it should be easy for most mods. Sorry there's a few mods here or there that don't work, but this is a game that never had official modding support, you can't expect everything to work, especially when there's constant updates.

See? It's hard to relate to people if you're coming form different experiences, versions, mods.
Another theme I'm seeing here is people being tired with the game overall. Take a break guys, heck, maybe just stop playing altogether. Minecraft may not have a definite end in the way of a plot, but when it feels like you've done everything in the game you need to put it on a shelf.

It's not Mojang's fault you use mods, and you could just use a older version of Minecraft. (Go to the minecraft launcher and go to edit profile.)
That's one of the downsides of mods- there's not much left for Mojang to do that modders haven't already covered. Modders can do whatever they want, but Mojang can't step on their toes.
This version is selling well. Just because you're sick of it doesn't change the fact that it's still one of the best-selling games on PC. Also, the rumor has it that they're dropping the console editions.
That's because they're not focusing as much on content and just working on getting all platforms at the same version.

I really think the updates are the best part and would love to see them done more often.
Most of the changes(combat update) aren't bad at all once you get used to them and update your gear.
This thread may be depressing, but it does bring up a valid point. Now, I doubt Minecraft's community will die because they can't mod. However, I think the game is done, as in finished. Every time they add something now, it seems like they alienate a portion of the player base. Despite people saying things like "oh, 1.9 won't split the community," it did. We're split between versions; some are playing on 1.6 because of the better caves, others on 1.7 because mods, still others on 1.8 because of 1.9's combat, and then we have 1.9+. You can say "if you don't like x feature, go back to 1.y!" However, that argument means that Mojang is failing to make good quality updates, because later updates had worse features. It also prevents the player from experiencing other features they like; not a terrible thing, but it's certainly annoying to see that one feature you've always wanted, but be kept aback because some other feature that doesn't make the game fun anymore. You can also say "Well, just mod it into your favorite version," which works, but then you have to work with mod conflicts and crashes that are unlikely to ever be fixed, and likely you won't find the feature you want. Plus, a lot of people are just opposed to modding the game.
The game is complete. Many of the features are as fleshed out as they are going to be. In order to add new content that fits in with the game, it tends to just be the easy "mob, structure, item, decorative block" approach, simply because anything revolutionary doesn't fit in with the game or splits the community (like the 1.9 combat).
Personally, I think the solution is to work on a Minecraft 2. That has several advantages over an update, even if it's harder to make:
Overall, though, I don't think Minecraft is going to live and die by the modding community. They help, but it largely depends on how Mojang decides to handle the game. It's selling well, but is it continuing to improve and become a better game? Or is its quality stagnate or even getting worse? Only time will truly tell.

What's with all the new combat hate? It was added for a reason. Did you at least try this stuff out? I don't mean to knock someone else's opinion but that's weird reasoning.

I don't know. Most of these points feel pretty minimal to me.
Mojang providing content still benefits a lot of people. Some people simply don't like mods believe it or not. They're just too unfitting, too bulky, bland, complicated, etc. to them. New content also benefits servers and map makers. It gives them more things to mess around in and making things vanilla generates a lot more traffic than making things with mods. Heck resource pack makers benefit too since you can't really make resource packs for every mod.
Some people also just don't want mods. Vanilla is great because its pretty instant to set up. Mods... Are a bit more. The easy part is installing forge, but the mod list will get overwhelming quick if you don't know many off the top of your head. Maybe parents are just setting the game up for their kids, perhaps a couple just wants to play a game together for a night. Setting up things towards vanilla is really simple, and with updates, it keeps vanilla players happy because they're part of the community, too.
Overall it'd be a bit selfish, you're leaving out all these people when you stop updating the game and that doesn't even include non-java players. That's right, Pocket edition, Windows 10 edition, Console, etc. They don't have mods. Leaving them out would be very rude considering they already get vanilla updates at an alarmingly slow rate. Of course win10/pocket edition has add ons... But uhm... There's not much to say about them, really. They're not exactly popular and I haven't seen any updates or anyone even talking about them past the initial release date.
Updates for the game help older players and newer players enjoy the game easily. The new content is out because the devs care about the community, and abandoning part of it just because "Mods exist stoppit" is just a slap in the face to those who don't/can't use them for whatever reason. New update benefits everyone from youtubers to children and to even the devs themselves. The devs enjoy making these updates and forcing them to quit would be like having your most favoritest thing in the world taken away.
After all, the modding community has no bad effects when it comes to modding. 1.7.10 has been agreed by almost everyone to be the default/universal modding update due to its popularity. Some devs can update beyond, but that's mostly a choice on them, not fault of the devs. If there's really demand for a new feature mojang added, backporting it should be easy for most mods. Sorry there's a few mods here or there that don't work, but this is a game that never had official modding support, you can't expect everything to work, especially when there's constant updates.
