Same reasons kids like LEGOs so much, if you ask me, with the added allure of being able to walk around in and interact with your creations. I mean, that can appeal to practically anyone, but with younger crowds, the appeal is almost universal.
Every game that gets popular will be played by famous youtubers, those youtubers have many young subscribers who will get interested in the game and play it. Doesn't help that Minecraft is a game for all ages.
Youtube youtube youtube... I'll admit, Youtube is what got me into MC almost 5 years ago. Back then it was a different place. More mature, more creative, and more enjoyable for older teenagers and young adults. I was just a young, sad teen who had mental problems at the time, and without friends because we had moved. Time changes you, man. *ahem* Back on topic, Youtube is really the big factor here. The emergence of smart phones and other mobile devices with internet/video capability helped propel the pace of youngsters getting into MC, after Youtube had started to take a more corporate approach, and the start of the dark ages with SkyDoesMinecraft, letting the videos spread into subjects and areas completely different, to the point where you simply could not get away, leading us into today with that being the norm, and not just MC videos. Now if MC had a smaller community and more mature overall, then I'd probably say it's siblings and friends of siblings witnessing their parents or older family members playing MC and being curious.
As for others, it has nothing to do with any "target demographic". Just because it doesn't have nonsensical and other elements because it's keeping with it's theme/type of game (Constructive sandbox) doesn't mean it's meant for xyz age. Call of Battlefield: Global Offensive black ops II or whatever has what is perceived more "mature" elements, yet we see crap tons of underage players that shouldn't be there.
Mmh, I kinda don't know. When I was 10 my brother introduced me to Minecraft due to one of his friends. I then started browsing through YouTube to learn how to play. Nowadays I just go on YouTube and watch random things which interest me. They probably joined because Microsoft announced they've owned Minecraft and will continue updating it.
I would say that SkyDoesMinecraft is the catalyst that resulted in a huge increase in the number of children playing Minecraft. Sky's content wasn't necessarily bad, but it pandered to a younger demographic and he became one of the first Minecraft YouTubers to have a large following mainly comprised of children.
More YouTubers such as DanTDM & Stampy soon followed, resulting in a significant number of children playing the game. Apart from YouTube, Minecraft has also been portrayed in the media as an educational game, hence some parents may introduce their own children to the game.

I disagree. His content was bad, and it still is. It's just so mindless and lacks any sort humor besides "HAHA I HIT YOU WHILE YOU WERE TALKING". But Stampy is even worse, at least Sky put some effort into making diverse content. Stampy just does the same thing over and over, he doesn't even play he just talks about nothing while running in circles.
They've probably seen and heard of older siblings, cousins, friends, etc. playing Minecraft. They then probably started playing it to be cool,or they actually thought it was fun to play.
Maybe youtubers did, I don't know.

Figured it was time for a change.
