I was started playing Minecraft in (around) the 1.3.6. version. I was never a veteran that started in the "good old days" from Minecraft alpha and beta.
I've seen many reports on how amazing it was, back in the day. Where "Minecraft was more simple," and "health was actually important and without the hunger bar we could play at your own pace.". The times where "you didn't have to hide your house from griefers, and the community wasn't filled with 12 yo autists" (sorry about this one, just quoting what I found).
After looking a bit deeper into it, I found out that there are A LOT players from around 2010 who want to bring back those times. Even though there is a large amount of people with the same desire, there is a big lack of organisation to try to achieve their common goal. There are small servers starting here and there but they don't last very long and it's back to square one
Main Point of This Thread:
By satisfying the hunger for nostalgia, copying the idea of another game (RuneScape) and some massive help from the community, I think it's possible to bring back the old days.
My idea (heavily based on Old School RuneScape) is to create a new branch in Minecraft. Take the latest alpha version (1.2.6.) and somewhat start over. There would still be the main team developing the main game, and the community developing Old School Minecraft. This would be possible by getting togerher some developers that would only add content according to the community, by running polls that need at least 75% to pass. It would ctreate 2 versions of the same game that follow different paths and could live side by side. A game purely developed by the players who enjoy it.
Now comes the hard part. Gathering a good team from the community to develop the game according to the player base response and ideas. We would also need Microsoft's (or who ever is in charge for that) authorization to develop another official version of Minecraft that would be available in the launcher. This is a big and extremly difficult goal and it can only be achieved if nostalgia hungry people like me start to organise it, but with some work, I think this is possible.
In Conclusion:
Like mentioned before, this is a hard goal to complete but it's possible. I could put together a team, but before I would like to hear from the communtiy and gather some ideas and feedback.
P.S.: Here are some projects that eventually died out and show that there are stil players interested:
Sorry if i wasn't clear enough, but I meant the official continue development of a new branch from Minecraft, starting from 1.2.6. Being an official version will get more attention a bigger popularity than being just a mod. Can you please tell me the name of the mod (if there is one)?
Exactly. Getting Microsoft to even notice is already darn near impossible...
Exactly, that is was I think this would only be done with a massive impact from part of the community. It's kinda disappointing seeing people that start thinking like that already. Oh well... worth the shot. Thank you both for the feedback
Even if it was noticed, old school communities are generally very rude and not friendly. You wouldn't want it, it wouldn't be the same since players are different now. Look at the old school runescape community as the example you provided.
RS players wanted the "old runescape" back to relive the good old times. When players were friendly and the game was fun. What happened when the game came out? Yes players got to relive the good old moments, but those same players who were "good" back then have grown up and become crappy. From what I've seen, most players can't stand each other on that game. People always throw the word "toxic" to describe the community.
If what you say gets noticed, I don't think it would be any different. Yes those older players may come back, but who is to say they haven't become crappy themselves.

In my opinion, it's unfair to use RuneScape to compare to this situation. RuneScape allways had that dark side, dark side which is and allways was bigger and more "powerfull" that is, was or ever will be in Minecraft. As of right now, 90% of the cancer player base of Minecraft are non veterans, and being most of them very young, (<12) (not trying to say that all player who are below the age of 12 are the bad part of the community, these are just facts.) and only started playing after the alpha and beta versions were history, therefore, I think only a small portion of those players would pass over to what would be Old School Minecraft.
And here I thought this post was going to be about veterans using Minecraft to help readjust to life, deal with PTSD, or even just connect with each other. Instead it is another nostalgia post.

I, as a veteran player, can say that this isn't a good thing. Part of what made Minecraft great wasn't just Minecraft, but the real world community. In schools, there is much of a negative stereotype for Minecraft players, which didn't exist when Minecraft was obscure.. And with it popular, it's bound to attract more players that aren't wanted. The negative stereotype is quite deserved, in my opinion. If it attracts lots of players besides veterans, any are bound to not be veterans.. And in a place designed to target veterans, ruled by democracy, it isn't good when the majority aren't veterans. I personally would prefer it as an unofficial thing.. Spread like word of Minecraft was spread a while ago.. Through word of mouth and chance encounters with it.. Not everyone knows of it.

I am trying to end all the nostalgia posts my creating this project. The nostalgic community needs to organise it self and have a common goal.

What it's considered unwanted players awere mostly attracted to the game due to it's combat system (1.8 and lower) and not it's survival/building contest. It's obvious that the "Old School" player base won't be perfect. No game has the perfect players. Even in the alpha/beta times, there were griefers and hackers. It's impossible to have a perfect community.

Thank you for the correction. I wasn't quite sure who would be in charge of that.
The thing is nostalgia comes not from lack of a goal or direction but from missing something that can't be recaptured again. People miss the feeling of unknown when they first started playing the game, before the knew the tips and tricks to survive and play the game. They miss the feeling of newness. Just playing a past version won't recapture that - initial enjoyment will give way to nostalgia once again and they will look to find some other reason why they don't feel quite the same way as when the game was new.
I can load up Super Mario Bros anytime I want and play it and while it would be fun and challenging and bring back memories, it would never be like when I first played it as a kid. That is why nostalgia invokes feelings of melancholy. It is just a part of life.
There are some players, like myself, who enjoy playing old versions to the point of never upgrading; I still play 1.6.4 and have absolutely no intention of ever playing a newer version, even after more than 3 years since 1.6 was released, during which I've invested around 3,500 hours into the game, and averaging 3.72 hours per day over the past 40 days (about 4,000 hours over 3 years, so I've recently been playing more).
Conversely, "old versions" does not mean that I'll play Alpha or Beta; at this point it pretty much just means 1.6 since with 1.5 (I started playing in 1.5.1 and only really caved for about a month before 1.6) I'd have to give up mining all coal since there were no coal blocks (I've even modded in a block that lets me compact rails in the same way as ores); prior to 1.4.2 there were no anvils, so that's definitely out.
Also, as for using a mod you are better off with the real thing than trying to modify a newer version; it would probably even be easier to backport any newer features that you wanted (as I did in a mod I made that adds my own features as well as some from 1.7+).
i got minecraft 4 years ago and started watching it 5 years ago... it was fun to learn with the people who were playing it for the first time, then after a few days of watching it, i got my friend into it. BEST. IDEA. EVER. now we happily play minecraft whenever we want. my first server ever was minecloud (back when it was super duper popular)
If Facebook, Myspace, and Twitter were all destroyed, 99% of teens would go insane. If you're one of the 1% that would be laughing at them, copy this into your signature and hope it happens.

Microsoft? As far as I know, Mojang still develops the PC version of Minecraft, not Microsoft.
Yes, Microsoft owns Mojang, but Microsoft doesn't develop the PC version.
This is what the OP said: "We would also need Microsoft's (or who ever is in charge for that) authorization to develop another official version of Minecraft that would be available in the launcher."
I don't think he was saying that Microsoft was developing it though.

Yes, the maximum sense of nostalgia will never be achieved, but, this is as close as we can get. At them moment, you can download the older versions and play what you want, but personally,I think it's way more motivating and fun, knowing that there is a decently large community that plays what you play.

It seems to me like a lot of players who left runescape turned to minecraft.
I doubt that. RuneScape's popularity was the higher in 2005-2007, therefore, most of them are adults right now which I eally doubt that would turn into a completly different game. Some might have, but in my opinion it was only a small part.
