Potion brewing is not a mechanic that conforms to real world logic, therefor, it kinda falls under the category of magic. Water+Red Mushroom-like thing+ watermelon+gold= liquid with special healing properties? Seems legit.
Come on guys. That is like saying that aspirin is "Potion of Curing" or some crap like that.
If you want to discuss this, then fine. But don't turn it into a flamewar.
Because many of the effects of potions do not seem to have a realistic connection with chemistry or biology. Like:
How does drinking a pufferfish give you gills... temporarily?
How does a golden carrot mixed with a sugar/mushroom/spider eye combo let you turn invisible?
How does a mix of slime and burning shards of glass/metal let you be invulnerable to fire?
Yeah, medicines can be mixed from weird things, but they have logic. Outside of 'doing it repeatedly gets the same results,' potions have no apparent logic. Do you really think that drinking something that sounds harmful would give you an effect that makes no chemical or biological sense?

i think it's because the potion effects are usually related to magic like invisibility, breathing under water and resistance to X element. These ''powers'' are often magical in nature in other games so i believe that minecraft uses them the same way. Just like the enchant books give powers to armors and weapons.
When a distinguished but elderly scientist states that something is possible, he is almost certainly right.
When he states that something is impossible, he is very probably wrong.
Clarke's second law:
The only way of discovering the limits of the possible is to venture a little way past them into the impossible.
Clarke's third law:
Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic.
The third law probably answers your question.

Medicines are made out of weird stuff, so why aren't potions?

If a player is killed using poison and damage potions, the death message will be displayed as "[player] was killed by magic."
Insulting people for their beliefs is not a good way of convincing them to adopt yours.
Fiction is just a game of make-believe recorded on paper or film. But that's what makes it so great.
