NOTE: This thread is not intended to be spam like many of the other "Minecraft is dying" threads, nor to start flame wars, NOR TO ASK THE QUESTION of if it is dying or not. It is simply meant to help stop the conspiring on the forum caused by derps who have no idea what they're talking about.
Ever since the Minecraft Forums started, there have been several pointless threads going up about "OH GOD MINECRAFT DEAD", or "Is Minecraft Declining?", and "Minecrfat die" (spelling mistake intended). However many people say that Minecraft is a dying game, whether the reason is Microsoft's acquisition, Notch leaving, stupid developers, etc., this is not entirely the case. The game itself (as to say the actual game code, not the servers) is not what is in decline at all, the part dying being certain aspects of the community.
One thing that I know many of us can accept is that about 99% of the players on most servers are a right pain in the behind. Sure, a lot of people would say "Minecraft is getting even more popular!", and they'd be right, the only issue being is that the newcomers are 50% hackers, 50% stupid squeaking kids. This has led to servers getting full of people disrupting the gameplay for others, and thus contributing to the decline of the servers, as in the mature people who actually want to play leaving and not coming back.
The servers themselves are also declining in two other aspects: Staffing and plugins. For one thing, the situation for plugins has become gradually more difficult after the DMCA of Bukkit, which is now being fixed and updated extremely slowly considering that now a small team is all that is working on it. To add to the plugins issue, while two or more years ago there would've been quite a few simply vanilla survival servers, most servers are the typical:
where pretty much everything is either factions full of 7-year-olds, pvp with 7-year-olds, or jail with the admin of the server (don't even get me started.)
If that can get any more annoying, a lot of what goes on on a typical server is based around a [VIP] or [YAY DONATOR] or [RICH DIAPER-CLAD BABY] system.
Staffing has become an extreme problem in the sense that most servers nowadays are run by either power-abusive 3rd graders who ban everybody and then cry, or power-abusive 16-year-olds who curse their heads off and make absurd rules.
One of the more problematic areas in which Minecraft declining is the modifications community. While the bigger mods, such as MrCrayfish's Furniture Mod, or Tinkers Construct, still thrive to this day, some of the smaller mods that were extremely popular in the days of 1.2-1.5 have either died entirely, or have been taken up by idiots who don't even know how to create a class in Java. The slightly frightening parts about this is that modding is almost entirely what keeps Minecraft alive and popular. To make matters worse, Planet Minecraft, which has quite a large modding and texturing community, is in somewhat of a decline considering the fact that a majority of what's on it was stolen from somebody else, and nobody can figure out the licensing, original creator, etc.
The one issue that many people have repeatedly stated, the king of all the issues, is updates. Or is it? When you look at some of the 1.7 updates, you'll see this:
+ All kinds of flowers
+ Rainbow glass
+ Rainbow wool
+ More rainbows
+ Two new completely pointless types of trees!
+ A completely unnecessary rendering engine that broke all the mods!
And for 1.8:
+ Spiky fish! Spooky!
+ Bunny wabbits!
+ Bunny wabbit skin!
+ Bunny wabbit meat!
+ Sheep guts!
+ Another unnecessary update to the rendering engine that broke all the mods AGAIN!
Isn't it all just so happy and nice and delicious?
The updates may be annoying for mod-makers, and they might be full of pointless things that don't really help, but this isn't completely negative for Minecraft's development.
Many people say that MICROSOFT IS BEHIND IT ALL!
I hate to bust all you conspirers bubbles, but this is in no way the case. As stated in this WIRED article, Microsoft's main duty with Minecraft was to help manage it's decline. Mojang, as quite a few of us may agree, probably wasn't going to be able to handle this themselves. Microsoft is not adding micro transactions, not adding any new features, and overall pretty much staying entirely out of it's development. Mojang was already in a slight decline finding new ways to manage money, after two of their newest games: 0x10c and Scrolls, both died, they had two options left: Minecraft and Cobalt. Cobalt's issue is that it is still in early development, and Minecraft's issue is that it won't last forever.
In short, Minecraft as a game is not what is in a decline. The decline that everybody is gossiping, spamming, and conspiring about is in the major parts of the general community, including multiplayer and modding.
P.S.: As for the spamming idiots, please just stop.
As I see it, you are right! People can't even enjoy the game anymore because of all of this crap that is going on about public servers and ranks! I'm a 12-year-old server admin, and I personally have these rules for my in-home-hosted server:
no swearing
no griefing
no rudeness or crudeness
The End!
I personally think that Mojang (or Microcraft) has been releasing a bunch of random stuff in the updates! The game is just declining.
Sadly, the game used to have more sensible players, but now, 90% of the people on Minecraft are a bunch of little kids who buy pro-hosted servers and who don't even know how to assign more RAM to Minecraft! Thank You for bringing up this subject!
As a piece of popular culture gets more popular, the people who experience it trickles down. It started that Minecraft was mostly played by adults, but then pre-teens adopted it, before their little siblings wanted to play whatever Big Brother or Sister was playing. Everything trickles down to lower and lower age groups, and Minecraft isn't alone in this. It's constantly happening to certain corners of the internet, swear words, and even gaming as a whole.
AlexWilson above mentions that he is tired of little kids buying hosted server time who don't know how to allocate RAM to Minecraft. What he is describing is 99% of kids under the age of ten, which in turn makes up a huge swath of Minecraft's player base. In response to your comment, AlexWilson, if you are reading this, I ask you: would you rather that those little kids didn't play Minecraft? Would you rather the game be less accessible to kids, to prevent these kids from playing a game that they not only enjoy, but millions of them enjoy en masse?
Minecraft is trickling down. And maybe it's not Mojang, or the community, or the game itself, but you and your rose-tinted glasses that are making it seem that Minecraft as a game is becoming worse and worse over time.
I am getting into Minecraft late (about a year ago). Bought 3 licenses so my kids and I can play together. Even my 4 year old learned how to turn the computer on, click on the icon, load his world file, and start playing.
We stay off the servers for now, and we really love the game. Minecraft can continue to be a big hit with more and more people if the issues you address are managed. The mods do breathe more longevity into the game so keeping them active is important. Even my 14 year old wants to learn Javascript to start looking into modding. That's pretty cool actually. The key is making sure that the newcomers don't turn into the whiny kids you are complaining about. Maybe they need some shepherding so they know how to behave? Maybe they are frustrated finding what it is they want to do? It is quite a daunting task trying to find out "what to do in Minecraft" because there's ssssoooo much to do. So many servers, so many mods, wikis, Youtube videos, and the forums. Quite frankly I have no idea where to start if I wanted to join a good server. Not sure if Microsoft can provide a better "idiot's guide for newbies".
I think this all just means Minecraft is a game so packed with features it could be left alone. I think the reason why people aren't buying the game every second is become almost everyone who can buy the game has already. Think about it, 22 million on PC alone. That is HUGE.

According to this chart Minecraft is far from market saturation, 22 million actually isn't that much, or even the total number who have bought the game on all platforms; Pocket Edition in particular appears to be very popular, well exceeding PC sales despite being released later, the latest figure that I've seen for all platforms puts total sales at 72 million, more than three times PC sales alone:
To get some idea of the potential market for Minecraft, let's look at the number of Internet users, indicative of people with access to computer technology; if even a few percent of these users buy Minecraft that's still up to hundreds of millions of copies sold (many people also buy the game for multiple platforms):
As of the most recent reported period, the number of internet users worldwide was 3.17 billion, up from 2.94 billion in the previous year.
Cobalt is released on Steam since the 2nd February, so I don't think it is still in early development
Just because it's on Steam doesn't necessarily mean it's not in early development. For example, I tested out a game called Creativerse, recently published to Steam however still in early access.
You're not really forced to deal with kids on minecraft, i never quite got what the big deal is with those.
Wouldn't blame them for being kids anyway, the actual problem is there aren't many adult/mature players around (it's true, though, that the same could be said of the vast majority of popular games these days).
Still, there are some respectable micro communities around; you will find a server that suits you eventually, no matter how picky you are.
As long as you play with friends or ignore the chat you can easily enjoy any of the big servers, just stick with what you like and ignore the rest.

+Kopnix "No its not." I'm going to take that as you're saying Minecraft is not in decline. That's exactly the point that I've been trying to make throughout this thread. BTW, about the update, there are quite a few threads on here stating how so many people hate the update.

+Meowstic I will go more in-depth about what the point is (if the note at the top does not make sense)
The point of the thread is to at least attempt to help make the answer to the question of "Is Minecraft Dying?" more obvious, so that the people who can actually read will not conspire about it and fill this part of the forum with useless rubbish.
Well, I play primarily on Minecraft PS3 Edition since you can host a server for basically a one-time fee (the cost of buying a PS3, and if you buy a mostly-broken PS3 that still works for what you need, that's actually a very low cost compared to renting a server. For example, my PS3 can't use HDMI, but otherwise it works perfectly). The number one thing killing my server and decreasing activity on PS3 Edition in general is MCCE-441. It even has the potential to corrupt your data, I've read stories about people losing the maps they've played on with their children for months because of this glitch.
The most frustrating part is, 4j said they were working on this issue and would have it fixed "soon"! (See attached pictures) At one point they even said it would be fixed by "the next major title update," but it was not. They continue to fix glitches which, honestly, almost no one cares about, while leaving the most frustrating and game-breaking glitch untouched and unaddressed. It is the most popular issue on the Console Edition section of the Bug Reporting website, yet we've had no word from 4j or Mojang or anyone else for months.
They should remove the option to tag PS3 servers as "24/7" on these forums, because it gives the false impression that it's actually possible to host a 24/7 server. It is not. Not as long as MCCE-441 remains unfixed.
So if anyone was asking themselves "Should I buy Minecraft PS3 Edition?", the answer is unfortunately a bold & underlined no. My best guess is 4j simply doesn't care about the glitch, because people generally don't find out about it until they've already bought the game.
I used to think 4j was one of the only game companies in the world which actually cared about its fans and their experience, rather than just the company's profit margins, but every day that passes with this glitch still occurring convinces me I'm wrong.
I would have to agree that it's more of the community declining, and kids just aren't mature. Granted, I'm 16, and my seven-year-old sister plays.
At least for me, I like adding in more modded structures and dungeons, because I want for survival aspect. I've been playing minecraft for two years and there isn't anything new, and I miss that. I'm very excited for 1.9 and the end city.

Yes.

For another comparison, Wikipedia says that 425 million copies of Tetris, the most popular video game of all-time, have been sold.
TheMasterCaver's First World - possibly the most caved-out world in Minecraft history - includes world download.
TheMasterCaver's World - my own version of Minecraft largely based on my views of how the game should have evolved since 1.6.4.
Why do I still play in 1.6.4?
That chart looks like you made it in paint. lol.
Not saying you did, just that it looks like it was.
Cast aside your festive doylaks: dragon stuff is about to happen.
Multiplayer is lonely once you understand how it actually works.

Just because it's on Steam doesn't necessarily mean it's not in early development. For example, I tested out a game called Creativerse, recently published to Steam however still in early access.
P.S. DO NOT PLAY IT. IT'S REALLY BAD.
You're not really forced to deal with kids on minecraft, i never quite got what the big deal is with those.
