Is it normal for Optifine to kill the updating of the world spawn chunks?
I've got a world that I'm REALLY happy with that has an iron farm built right on the world spawn point.
In vanilla without Optifine the farm keeps chugging away producing iron even when I'm several hundred blocks away deep in a mine.
With Optifine loaded I have to stay close to the farm for it to work.
Is there some setting that I'm missing?
I haven't found anything that seems like it would cause this in any settings I've looked at so far.

If you aren't part of the solution, then you obviously weren't properly dissolved.
It has been mentioned in other threads that Optifine unloads the spawn chunks.
I remember one post that suggested that as a benefit when trying to spawn non hostile mobs, since you wouldn't have to go to spawn to kill off any there.
No idea if it can be overridden or not.

I found a post on Reddit suggesting you can run MC as a server to get around the problem.
"This is a rather well known problem with optifine in singleplayer. It
tries to optimize many things. Some changes are good but some are bad,
like the problem here: Optifine unloads the spawn chunks to save on
memory and reduce cpu load. If you still want to use optifine but don't
play on a server, you could just run a local server on your computer and
connect with your client to that one. This way the client can use
optifine but you still get the same behaviour as pure vanilla minecraft
;)"
But there were other posts suggesting that you need OF on the server as well as on the client, so I'm confused...
With my new GPU I really don't need Optifine anyway so I'll just forgo it, at least with my currently favorite world.

Just testing.
Thank you. That's what I needed to know.

Optifine actually has a setting you can turn off to keep the spawn chunks loaded I read about in another post.
Video Settings -> Performance -> Smooth World -> OFF
Testing this now. Will edit this post soon.

Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!
It's working!
One hours test with me well outside of the spawn chunks and the farm is producing at the expected rate.

Great!
Just testing.
Hi, I just registered just to thank you! I was having the same problem and your suggestion fixed it!
Yes, a mod, and, from my knowledge, it just optimizes the game.
