I'm part of many game communities, and this game has the worst community when you want to talk about possibilities and methods/techniques in the game. People are extremely closed-minded and just want to be right all the time. Instead of actually testing things or checking if they are true, a lot of people just assume whatever they find convenient and argue on top of that.
If you understand what I'm talking about, you can skip the example:
Example:I encountered someone that said that fall damage was able to reduce the durability (right after I fell from a big distance and said "It's ok, it's not gonna waste my armor"). I said "I thought they changed that a long time ago...". And the person says "No I'm pretty sure I took fall damage and it wasted my armor not too long ago".
There are a couple of things that could be going wrong here:
> The event actually happened over 5 years ago and the person has a pretty bad memory. > The person accidently mistook it for another thing, like beeing hit by cactus or whatever, and thought the fall did the damage to the armor. > The person is actually lying about that experience just to give credibility to their claim.
Either way, the person is beeing extremely arrogant for not even considering the possibility of him beeing wrong. In this case, even after I said that in the wiki it said armor couldnt take damage from falls, the person still had doubts about it.
[Please don't take this example to the discussion, it was just an example to illustrate ONE of the many situations that happen all the time in the Minecraft community]
I play a lot of mechanically complex games, like Dota and Starcraft, and when people start talking about mechanics, they tend to be super careful with their words and are very open minded. Words like "probably" and "It's possible" are very commonly used, to demonstrate a humble approach on a complicated matter, specially when they are not certain about it. Why is it different in Minecraft? Why are there so many people that don't care about others and just want to be right no matter what? And I'm not talking about children here, I'm talking about ADULTS acting like children.

I don't sound like that, do I?
My guess is that it's because Minecraft seems super simple on the surface, but under the hood it's more complex. Since the majority of players don't bother to look under the hood, this is the end result.

Very few people are actually aware of the mechanics of Minecraft... I spend a lot of time discussing balance on certain servers (especially minigames) and people rarely know what they're talking about. A good example of this is strength pre-1.9. Strength 1 alone more than doubles melee damage, which is huge. There's this class-based team fight server where people can suggest classes, and I always tell people their class shouldn't implement strength unless it has significant downsides attached to it.

Ill say that since I've played minecraft for so long, I am confident that I know mostly how the game mechanics work. So if I say that I think something works a particular way, I'm not being arrogant, as that is what my knowledge tells me. That said, if I am indeed wrong, I am willing to listen because, well, I am wrong. I will look up the new mechanics and that is the end of that.
So next time someone says something, probe them to see if its just past knowledge, or they are just ignorant to recent changes. If someone is persistent in wrong mechanics, then cite a source that says the correct information and be done with it.
All else fails, just let ignorance be ignorant and take advantage of their stupidity.

Yeah lately I've just been giving up very early, I don't even bother trying to convince people anymore, it's just no use...

Yeah...that's not just Minecraft. People are becoming very narcissistic now a days. Okay, fine. Not all people. And I have to agree with TheDraconian, also.

No, that honor goes to Roblox.

Cast aside your festive doylaks: dragon stuff is about to happen.
Multiplayer is lonely once you understand how it actually works.

Do you see the irony in this post?
Anyway, there was absolutely nothing wrong with that example. There was no arrogance or rudeness of any kind there.
Yeah, true that. Now, to stay on topic, some people just don't want to admit they're wrong, or they have been given false information.
