i have been looking for computers for minecraft recently and have been wondering what operating system will work best (Windows is preferred). Not sure if you can download the full version of minecraft on windows 10 or 8. Let me know what you guys think.:D
Also on XP and some flavor or other of OS X on the Mac. Minecraft is pretty forgiving as far as software goes.
Note: do not buy Windows 8 for any reason. Get 7 or 10.
Smartest option is to buy Windows 7 and upgrade to Windows 10, if you have the patience.
Anyways Windows PC obviously DOES work on Windows 8 and/or 10. People get confused with Windows 10 Edition, which is exclusive to Windows 10 and is basically a port of Pocket Edition, which allows it to play on Pocket Edition servers. However it's GUI is considerably more like the PC edition.
Also, it should be obvious to get a machine that runs 64 bit windows and 64 bit Java.

Err, how? OT: As people have said, any OS works, as long as you have the correct Java edition. I personally prefer OS X, but Windows 8 and 10 are nice OS's. (yes, I enjoyed Windows 8, I'm weird that way)

Let me explain that for you:
>These days people are complaining about their games not working because they have just updated to windows 10. the reason is that Windows 10 requires a new CPU (3rd gen Core or better) but a 2010 or newer GPU could possibly handle it (as long as it supports DirectX 9.0c or higher) All the infos are found in the Microsoft official page
>About Windows 8, well lots of people were complaining about the lack of free RAM (don't judge me, I am not sure about this info, so don't start complaining and making a flame war, but you can tell me the right truth by quoting nicely )
-Pixel Format Not Accelerated Problems in Windows 10 Reasons-
1.Old Intel CPU (2nd Gen and older) and these aren't ready for Windows 10.Please downgrade to an older version
2-Slow/Intel GPU (But sometimes Intel GPU just work fine from 3rd Gen CPU or newer on Win10)
3-Update Drivers (recommended for Dedicated GPU but not always for Intel's)
[This signature isn't to critisice Intel/Microsft or any thing of this sort, I am criticising You and You idiotness for not checking the requirements for Windows 10] (If you are annoyed of the ammount of the thread with a "Pixel Format Not accelerated" problem, plz Share this signature

i said it works the best because its the most simple operating system and most programs work on it
anyway minecraft doesn't depend of windows it run on everything
it actually depend on your video card & processor & gpu &etc
if the computer have those stuff good then it will run minecraft smoothly and fast

Ok, thanks for clearing this up. And don't worry, I make it a habit no to start wars, flame or otherwise. (Unless an unworthy quester comes after my Fire Rune. )

Actually, you never said Windows 7 was the most simple operating system. You said "Windows 7 is the best!" I'm also aware it depends on hardware, but most people (I'm my experience) usually have capable CPU's (and Minecraft's graphics can run on pretty much any GPU if you tweak some settings) I'm not sure what your definition of a simple OS is, but mine is "an easy to work interface" to paraphrase it. OS X fits that paraphrase nicely. But I don't want to start an OS flame war here, let's all move along now. TL;DR: Read before you post.
Wow didnt expect this many people to answer me. So what im getting out of this is 7,8,10 all work. But for windows 10 cant u only install pocket edition ? or am i wrong. anyway this kinda helped me out hope to see you guys around on mc someday.
btw i literally made this account just to do this
i know all the requirments of the computer just wanted to see what os works best.
ALSO GIVE ME A SUGGESTION OF A COMPUTER THAT IS FAIRLY LOW IN PRICE. (200-400)

(1) No, as I said above, 8.1 (and I presume 8) actually uses less memory.

Stay Sweet my friends
No, the ordinary PC edition will work just fine. It uses Java which is multi-OS compatible, basically any OS can run Java, and any OS following the release of Windows XP should run Minecraft.
The Windows 10 edition is just a new edition that takes advantage of Win10's cross-device support, so using the Windows 10 edition you can play multiplayer on a Win10 PC with friends playing on say their mobile devices, and maybe Xbox One's.

You can get the full version in Windows 10, AND you can get Pocket Edition in Windows 10. And don't worry, it took me forever to understand computers, and compared to quite a few people here, I basically know nothing.
PERFECT.ok i understand now. I wanna thank every1 for helping me. i really appreciate it.
1 more thing is it true that 8 is bad and 8.1 is good. I can update computers to windows 10 if i wanted right?
As long as you have geniune copy of Windows 8.1/7 you can install a media creation tool here (also you need some system requirements, you can have a look at my signature or on the internet) . And It's completely free until July 2016.

8 introduced some features which have had a mixed reaction (some people absolutely despise the new start page, I personally don't mind it) and improved on other things (copy and paste dialog window is improved and the new task manager is a big upgrade from the last), however 8 fell short in other things (always booted to the start page versus desktop, no start button, generally for tablet and touchscreen devices than desktop PCs).
8.1 is basically 8, with the problems fixed. A start button is available, you have the option to boot to the desktop and the OS is generally more desktop-friendly. If you want Windows 8, get 8.1.

All you need to do is insure that you download and install the latest version of Java from Oracle.

Since Minecraft is programmed using JAVA, minecraft will work on ALL THE RECENT OPERATING SYSTEMS (courtesy of Java Virtual Machine)
I recommend getting win10 for it since you will be able to receive the minecraft Windows 10 edition and the normal minecraft(probably)

The answer is D; all of the above.
Windows 8? Stay away.
Windows 8.1? It's alright.
For performance Windows 8/8.1 actually works a bit better due to a lower resource footprint. Uses less memory and processing time than 7 does alone.
