I've been a long time fan of Terraria. Whenever I tried Minecraft in the past, I can't sustain my attention past 15 minutes at most. It's either some java error crashed my game, or I can't immerse into any multi-player servers.
I still play Terraria extensively but one thing that irks me about it is building with a side view - things I build in a side view doesn't translate to real world at all because there's no depth.
So I want to try Minecraft again but this time, instead of wondering to myself what I might be doing wrong and getting lost from information overload (Google has terribly overwhelmed me), can I know from you guys what are the best current resources on building tips, mods and so on?
Thank you all in advance for reading this and I really appreciate your input.
I wouldn't get into mods right away. They can be a pain to set up and can also be discouraging. Just play vanilla for a while, get the hang of things, and if you want more, try mods. If you need any help with recipes or general information about the game, http://minecraft.gamepedia.com/Minecraft_Wiki is really helpful.
Many thanks for the link. I found a general "work flow" summary of survival mode and that's actually very helpful for pointing me to the right direction on what to do.
Welcome to the forums! Just take things slowly at first. The wiki is pretty much your guide and then some. For building, it's something you can observe others do and learn from it. There is also loads of videos on youtube that do building tutorials of all types. Maybe try to find a Creative free build server if you want to work along side others.
As Sazrocks said, I'd pass on mods until you get more familiar with the game itself, and its internal files. When you do get mods however, you can use them to enhance building experiences, tinker, and even add terraria things into Minecraft! (There's a mod for literals everything out there.)
Remember that Terraria has much more adventuring and stuff.. for Minecraft pretty much you'll just be doing the building for the majority of the time (Unless you like digging for ore a LOT). If you want to follow a good goal, try getting all the achievements (You can see them from the pause menu).
I dunno how viable this is anymore, probably not at all when I think about it, but I remember the "how to survive and thrive" series by paulsouresjr (or something. It's been years) was a really good guide for beginners. Started playing while he made his series and modeled my first base just like he did. Other than that, I'd recommend to play on the "creative" game mode if you're only interested in building.

He has multiple series. His currently running one is for 1.8.
Youtube is a great source for learning everything you need to know without getting overwhelmed. I personally liked How to Survive and Thrive when I first started. Get used to Vanilla before you start experimenting with mods and everyone starts out as a not so great builder. Just have fun with it

Figured it was time for a change.

I find it best before using mods to try redstone then get a mod for redstone or related (Buildcraft,Redstone+,WallRedstone, etc)
