world generation was better, no crappy mini games, not many hackers, friendly community and most of all not a bunch of angry COD kids who came because minecraft is main stream. yep, i miss 1.7.3 and when i say that i mean the update before minecraft released with the 1.8 adventure update.
By "old Minecraft" do you mean a certain version? A certain experience? Something else?
I miss being a newbie. I miss how cool it was when my first batch of glass came out of the furnace, and how awesome it was to find something mining and realize "hey, that's diamond ore!" I miss what it felt like the first time I rode in a minecart, or the first time I killed a creeper (instead of the other way around). And none of those things will ever happen again -- none of those things can ever happen again -- because I've done them all now, and they'll never be new again. That's Minecraft. They say you can't go home again, and it's true -- not because 'home' has changed, but because you have. That's life.
So, no, I don't miss "the old Minecraft". I might miss some of the people I first knew here on the forums, who have long since moved on to other things, but definitely not some version of the game, or the nebulous "the community" which was supposedly great when the person posting started, but has since turned horrible. (oddly, they all seem to have different times for when "the community" jumped the shark -- usually shortly after they themselves joined it. Hmmm....)
I remember my first days back in 1.8 or so. I remember having a really laggy computer, so I had my render distance down to tiny. It was always really foggy, and I was TERRIFIED of everything. I also remember watching a video on the recipes, finding out how to create glass, and doing so. I had my house in a hill in a swamp biome, and I had lots of lookout areas with glass. I remember finding rotten flesh and thinking that it was some kind of animal that had died and the meat rotted. Good times.. ; - ;
Too bad u started in 1.8 when minecraft was already going down. If you would have started in alpha you would have even more amazing memories
Why would his memories be any better? When he looks back years from now he'll think his experiences were the best. (Not saying thats bad - but probably normal as I would too) You don't even know which 1.8 he is talking about (Presumable beta).

World generation is an opinion, but I do agree that exploring old world gen was much more exciting. I'm sure many people disagree with you on "crappy mini games" else no one would play them. As for not many hackers, thats pretty much wrong.. Friendly community is where this gets interesting. The friendly community can still be found, but now the player base is so much larger that it would be hard to find them. As for "angry COD kids" thats mostly a stereotype and you'll see those in basically any game ever.
"Old Minecraft" has nothing to do with the amount of hackers. Player count has to do with that. More hackers didn't start appearing because of any update.
I've been playing since 1.2.5, and I miss the old Wet Hands... and the old everything else.

No, it definitely still looks like gravel.
And looks better when used for roads, like it does for naturally-spawned villages.
I like to put it this way, I don't miss the "old Minecraft". Rather, I miss the experiences I had when it was a young and fresh game to me.

Resource packs though..
I'm not trying to say "new Minecraft" is perfect - it's not.
Obviously I mean the first one. And maybe your right. Not like I would know. Still, I have very nostalgic memories of it.
