You can even block them in compleatly as long as there is at least one block at the level of the door within 5 blocks straight out from the door that receives light from the sky and more skylit blocks on one side of the door than on the other (the block the door stands on isn't counted.)
The villagers don't have to be able to get at the doors or even be able to see them, they just need villagers within 16 blocks to "discover" them.
